    You didn't take Stone skin here, but it's still relevent to note that the designers have said that resistance doesn't kick in until after the ward goes down. Until then YOU aren't taking damage. It does still help AoA stay up, though.

    • @matthewconlon2388
      @matthewconlon2388 4 года назад +11

      The designers need to go back and read their own text. Arcane Ward doesn’t apply if you have Immunity since it only takes damage when ever you would take damage. If Immunity applies by RAW, resistance would as well since how much damage is determined before damage is applied. So if you would take 10 and it’s resisted to 5, you would take 5, AW absorbs that 5 not 10 before the damage is dealt.

      @@matthewconlon2388 “How does Arcane Ward interact with temporary hit points and damage resistance that an abjurer might have? An Arcane Ward is not an extension of the wizard who creates it. It is a magical effect with its own hit points. Any temporary hit points, immunities, or resistances that the wizard has don’t apply to the ward.
      The ward takes damage first. Any leftover damage is taken by the wizard and goes through the following game elements in order: (1) any relevant damage immunity, (2) any relevant damage resistance, (3) any temporary hit points, and (4) real hit points.”
      I disagree with what Wizard of the Coast says, but the official ruling is that Arcane Ward still take damage even though you’re immune.

    • @matthewconlon2388
      @matthewconlon2388 4 года назад +2

      Official or not the ruling is wrong and an unnecessary nerf to an already anemic subclass.
      The RAW has the ward prevent damage you would take, not damage you wouldn’t. You can argue narrative logic, but that’s irrelevant in a RAW discussion. I’d play it as the DM rules, it gets a buff at my table and I campaign for the same at others.

      @@matthewconlon2388 doesn't make any sense though. The Ward is outside you, Stoneskin is where your skin is. I don't think RAW is as clear as you think either. RAW resistance and vulnerability apply after all other modifiers to damage. Ward pretty clearly modifies how much damage you take by however much it can absorb. Let me know though if D&D defines what a modification to damage is that I've missed.

    With the new Mark of Warding Dwarf from Wayfinder’s Guide to Eberron, you can make an even better version of this character! The Mark of Warding dwarf gets certain spells automatically added to any of its spell lists (not yet implemented in D&D Beyond), including such abjuration spells as Armor of Agathys and Antilife Shell. Grab 1 level of Forge cleric for heavy armor (dwarves can wear with no STR requirement) then go full wizard and waddle yourself into battle. It’ll be less weapon-focused than before, and you won’t have hellish rebuke, but you can live without those things. You can even make a weapon-using build with a lower strength score if you find a magic item like the gauntlets of ogre strength.

    • @andrecdev
      @andrecdev 4 года назад +1

      1 level of artificer is better imo, you get med armor instead of heavy, but you get proficiency to con saves, faerie fire and thorn whip (amazing to get enemies to hit you), martial weapons and shields and still get full spell slot progression without having to get 13 wis.

    • @Adurnis
      @Adurnis 4 года назад +1

      Andre Dev Strong argument! I do love me some faerie fire. I think I’d tend to lean forge cleric, as that AC is a bit better, and for a build that won’t be making as many concentration saves, I’d prefer Wis save proficiency. Plus, having to hold your tools in one hand really hurts the artificer multiclass.

    • @andrecdev
      @andrecdev 4 года назад

      @@Adurnis AC is hard to beat. But if the plan is to get hit a lot (to deal damage with AoA) then 1-2 lower AC for prof bonus to con save seems like a good trade. You're gonna be taking Warcaster anyway so the tools shouldn't be a problem after 5th level, which is also when you wanna start doing booming blades as opportunity attacks after pulling an enemy in with thorn whip. Booming blade as an opportunity attack should automatically do the extra damage, depending on your DM. Thorn Whip also really goes a long way to using this fighting style and gives a really fun defender feel, pulling enemies away from your squishiest friends.

    • @Adurnis
      @Adurnis 4 года назад +1

      Andre Dev Here’s the problem with the tools. If you want to use artificer spells, you need the tools in one hand. If you want to attack with a weapon, you need to hold that weapon (read: dwarven thrower) in one hand. That means no shield, warcaster or not. Cleric spells, on the other hand, you can cast as long as you have the emblem on your shield, and that makes armor of agathys no problem.
      Also, re: thorn whip, secondary booming blade damage only triggers if the enemy moves of their own accord, not if they’re pulled by a spell.

    • @andrecdev
      @andrecdev 4 года назад

      @@Adurnis Re: thorn whip: the point is to force a character next to you so that they either move and take BB damage or hit you and take AoA damage. In either case you've prevented the enemy from attacking an ally. You can also stack environmental effects (e.g. grease) on the area between you and your ally, forcing the enemy to have to go through them. Also this combination leaves your concentration free, letting you cast spells that make you a threat like Treatmonk suggested. Other methods of forcing enemy movement often use concentration (e.g. bigby's).
      RE: Warcaster, so does war-caster just do nothing for Artificers? Can you use a hammer as your spell-casting focus (i.e. your smiths tools act like a light hammer), the way you can use a staff as an arcane focus? Then you can use your hammer hand for both somatic components and material components of artificer spells. Booming blade doesn't use material components, but Thorn Whip does, so maybe that's a workaround. Faerie fire just uses verbal, does that get around the need for tools in the Artificer section? It doesn't look like it which is disappointing unless the hammer thing works. Maybe you have to take 2 in artificer to get infusions but that puts you as far back as taking a warlock level.
      There's also always ruby of the warmage.

    I hate the diamond cost to Stone Skin as well versus what it gives, but in the context of instead spending 100 gp on two healing potions, it might not be too bad as a selectively cast spell, perhaps only a couple of times per adventure.

    • @clenzen9930
      @clenzen9930 5 лет назад

      In AD&D 2ed, Stoneskin was a go to spell. It should do one of the following in 5e (I think): Not be concentration, or not have a Material cost or include resistance vs magical S/B/P damage. In 2e it blocked a half dozen attacks outright, and lasted until hit!

    • @micahiwaasa9304
      @micahiwaasa9304 5 лет назад

      @@clenzen9930 I have a bit of a pet peeve for spells that make you better able to take a hit requiring concentration; to benefit involves you possibly losing the spell! Actually, the broader problem I have is concentration saving throws. I don't mind concentration as a limiter to the number of effects you can have going at once. The swinginess of losing concentration is lame, though.

    How about Blade Ward as a cantrip option? If really in the thick of it, resist damage from attackers to increase the life of your ward? Might be a better option to half the damage of attackers when surrounded by mooks rather than merely lashing out with a booming blade against one target. While casting this spell, could use a bonus action attack spell (such as Flaming Sphere or Crown of Stars) to at least do some active damage in the round.

      Blade war works very well. Blade ward is great to cast when armor of agathys is up because it’s up until the end of your next turn. This potentially gives you to turns of movement to run around provoking opportunity attacks. It also gives resistance to piercing, slashing, and bludgeoning damage from non magical and magical weapon attacks.

      It would. Arcane Ward states that the player is casting a spell of 1st level or higher, but does not mention expending a spell slot. A similar reasoning could be applied to using the Eldritch Invocation allowing you to cast Mage Armor at will being used to refresh your entire ward in between combat, which is legal.
