  • Hungary, often described as a thorn in the EU's side, has repeatedly blocked the European initiatives. And while the EU has a treasure chest of disciplinary tools, their mightiest - Article 7, dubbed the 'nuclear option' -- has been ineffective. Why? Enter Poland, Hungary's trusty sidekick in EU-defiance. Together, these historical buddies have teamed up against EU sanctions and pressure, especially the dreaded Article 7. But here's the twist: recent Polish elections saw a regime change, with Tusk's coalition taking the reins. So, Hungary might be on the brink of losing its partner-in-resistance. But fear not, the EU-Hungary tango isn't over. Rumor has it another country is warming up in the wings, ready to dance to Hungary's beat.

That's a stupid perspective, sorry for being blunt.
So knowing they WERE a democracy and they've allowed their government to backslide slowly eroding the rights of their fellow human beings for being gay/trans/etc you still will love them as though it's not their fault they're allowing their democracy to collapse?
I used to love the Russian people back in the 90's, I hoped for them. But they let Putin turn Russia into more of the same instead of keeping the momentum rolling towards a functioning democracy because of some economic hardship. Estonians had to survive incredible poverty after the collapse but they held it together, kept their eyes on the prize and came out of it relatively wealthy with a strong economy and the most advanced government in the world (government, not military).
I just don't understand this oversimplified perspective of yours. So even if/when the Hungarians allow their government to become the next genocidal dictatorship you'll love them and don't think they are responsible for maintaining their democracy?
You must be a European because if you were an American I'd demand you leave my country, surrender your citizenship and never participate in the democratic process again. We have plenty of Republicans that think just like you. "I might not like the leader of my party but I love my fellow Republicans".

Please don't compare the Hungarian people to russians, there are nowhere close. An American citizen like you will never understand the bond that our nations forged through centuries of common struggles against foreign occupants. One bad government is just not enough to break it. This bond is older than the US so I get it is culturally incomprehensible for you.
Russians on the other hand were enemies of free people since pretty much the very begging. Being an imperialistic menace is the basic premise of their very culture, there is no russia without muh sphere of influence. They have never advanced beyond Mongolian satrapies.
One more thing, just voting for the ruling party is not supporting it in all its decisions. Many people in eastern Europe vote strategicly for their interests. And interest of the lower classes is fulfilled with Orbans social politics. A lot of these people wete hurt by the change of the central planed economy to the free market. They had their jobs and were as poor as the others. Now, a lot of those jobs didn't survive the conversion to the capitalist system, since they were usless in any other matter than being there for people to work. See, how Hungarians are very pro EU despite this government, they know it's good for them and they support it. It's the same for Orban voters. Fides is fulfilling the interests of a lot of the lower classes of the society who fear that the liberal democratic parties will abandon them.

That’s a very complex matter. The concepts of federalization of the EU and the union of independent states have been competing for many years. I don't know which concept to support. Each has its pros and cons. I assess the current EU regime as intermediate between these two concepts and probably the only possible one, resulting from a compromise. Without a doubt, federalization enables quick, effective decision-making and implementation. It would transform the EU into an empire. However, given the diversity of mentalities and cultures found in the EU, such a way of making decisions would give rise to a multitude of conflicts that would be difficult to extinguish. There would simply be many dissatisfied with the decisions of the then-federal or quasi-federal government. Decisions made on the basis of a compromise accepted by the general public take longer to make, but they are more durable and therefore may be more effective in the long run. It's a miracle that the EU exists at all. After all, it is an eternal, everyday dilemma of how to reconcile differences. But somehow it works. IMO If we abandon the path of federalization, we can simply adopt certain criteria of co-participation in certain areas, and a country that wants to co-participate in a given field must meet and maintain these criteria. A similar concept is already in force when it comes to the EURO zone or the Schengen area (which includes not only EU members, but some EU members do not). So this idea with tiers seems the only possible between all reasonable solutions, although it could be more tiers. The infograhics at 6:10 is too simplified.

The obvious benefits are lower costs and more fluid integration (within NATO, for example, or when partnering with NATO from outside). The actual armies could stay as they are, integrated with NATO (or not) or change in the light of new realities. A unified army would have to come after a more unified foreign and security policy, and I don't think that is low hanging fruit either. I do know one thing, there is a short window for the EU to act when it comes to Hungary and reforms to the EU, if the EU doesn't resolve the issues with Hungary one way or another and another hostile country in the EU pops up by election change that ends up backing Hungary, the EU will be back to square one.

Instead we got sued in world trade organization after showing huge amounts of real, material support starting from taking in literal millions of Ukrainian refugees (supporting of which was on us alone, as EU did not care to provide assistance unlike with Arab migrants in other countries) and then passing them a huge amount of military equipament which unlike UA we do not get for free. What we lost we have to buy back outta our own pocket.

As an Italian, for me what the eu simply fails to understand is countries’ like Poland and Hungary’s histories. Both have suffered from centuries-old foreign occupations and, because of the “divide et impera” strategy often applied by the occupiers, as a response to that individuals naturally sought in national unification (by linguistic, religious and ethnic criteria) the only way through which they could preserve their own personal freedom. Why bruxelles just won’t understand that? I am not saying Orban does not have flaws in his way of governing (I don’t live in Hungary so I can’t know), but in my opinion for ordinary people with such a history of dominations, it’s just more normal to assume that a national government even ruled in the extreme case by just a person in an autocratic way will treat their interests and personal freedoms better. And this is exactly the case with a eu that is increasingly supporting denationalising, vague and socially enraging ideals, which just won’t fit in places like eastern Europe, which has been shaped by traumatic experiences and reactionary uprisings, as I’ve said before. Eu values, most prominently democracy and liberalism, could be even good in the long term, but trying to use them as a trojan horse for policies that are right now giving more privileges to minorities (immigrants, lgbt rights…) in spite of the native european populations and their necessities, sparking controversies everywhere (and this is what has been going in western europe), won’t just give those countries a good impression. So no, up until bruxelles headquarters will stop being a centralized gotha of élites who rule over people giving 0 interest to their priorities, and promote ideals without contextualizing them to each country’s history and social framework (instead of supporting european unity based on a shared heritage and culture, they rather go after woke policies that in the long term could even result in the demise of the same people who gave Europe its name, normalizing workers’ dependance on job places in spite of liberist financial independance and sexual misconducts that aren’t useful for the reiteration of life, while at the same time easing immigration policies for people who are radically different from their heritage’s point of view and won’t integrate), there won’t be any further cooperation between the member countries and even the birth of the United States of Europe.

This Hungary issue wraps up all the problems with the current EU in a nice neat package. Honestly, yeah Hungary has slipped back into being no longer a real democracy, but that’s small potatoes when looked at from an EU level. This problem shows the fatal flaw of vetoes, blackmailing, once a country is within the EU the levers being totally inadequate, the problem with the EU never being taken seriously as a foreign relations player beyond economic briefs as it can’t speak with a single voice with a democratic mandate at the executive/hos level.
Putting aside the wisdom of allowing countries so recently becoming democracies into the eu club, it also highlights the issue of the EU being viewed as an atm that some countries will do the bare minimum to qualify for the financial handouts but don’t really believe in the project.
Unfortunately, we have simultaneously recently seen the two EU heavyweights acting in obviously nationalistic behaviour with energy reforms and using eu funds and the side of me that looks at the EU as a German exercise to have incredible influence within Europe after ww2 despite losing it and France to exercise amplified power even after the end of colonialism & loss of the age of empires and I think - gods, is it even worth the trouble.
Thing is, I do believe there is a way to structure the EU so that it is worthwhile but it is currently so far away at the moment. Yeah, Hungary is a flashing warning light the current setup isn’t fit for purpose but (& I do mean this with respect) it’s only Hungary and not as big a deal as it would be if bigger countries behaved that way.
As this channel has pointed out in videos before, the eu needs reformed for this and many reasons. If its issuing debt, it needs a take that final step and become some type of nation - likely a federal setup with very powerful states. Vetoes obviously need thrown out for most things, it needs a directly elected head of state that can speak with a democratic mandate - especially on foreign policy issues because look at the current mess with the Israeli response. I hope Hungary finds its way back, and Poland is too important to have flirting with disaster but both issues are just symptoms of the larger problem - EU is desperate need of a full rethink and rebuild. It’s either some type of nation or it’s a UN/G7 group of countries setup, in which case its powers need handed back to nations. I do wish Hungarians and the eu all the best as they work this, it is possible.

    • @mpelle129
      @mpelle129 8 месяцев назад +1

You get the point. The EU is a largely incomplete project. And it's even dangerous to maintain the current status quo.
First of all Europe lacks the cultural premises for further integration. It needs to be established a best common knowledge between nation states through school programs and a sort of "European broadcasting TV network", for examples. Knowledge will bring mutual trust.
Then we need the political will of the national governments to give power to a federal govt. I'm primarily talk about fiscal, defence and foreign polices.
About fiscal policy the main obstacles are the "frugal" countries (like Netherland or Sweden) actually quite Eurosceptic. And secondly the unreliability of some med countries like Italy. But it's an essential reform otherwise the € in the long run is unsustainable (except for Germany that largely benefits from it) and we will see other sovereign debt crisis.
About foreign and defence policies: all governments have different interests so it is necessary a strong ability to marry all the issues.
It's a very hard and long way, with no certainties. I perfectly agree with you that Hungary is not the real problem. In comparison to this "elephant in the room" it's only a pretext to cover the unwillingness of the other member states to take a federal direction.

first of all 194 plus 18 equals 202, and 2ndly
far-right party Konfederacja is closer to the opposition and "Koalicja Obywatelska" than it is to the ruling party "Prawo i Sprawiedliwość",
as it has been stated many times during the elections campaign by its leaders.
It might be hard to explain to the foreigners, but polish political scene is bit more complex than simple right wing-left wing dichotomy.
members of Konfederacja even made backstage deal with top management of Koalicja Obywatelska to prevent this type of coalition,
so PiS at the moment have no way of achieving the missing 29 votes

    • @FrikInCasualMode
      @FrikInCasualMode 8 месяцев назад

Additionally, PiS party has a well documented habit of "eating" its coalition partners. It happened before to "Self-Defence" party and "Center Agreement" when they created coalition with PiS years ago. By now only absolute desperates will make an alliance with them.

I'm old enough to remember the days when it was Denmark and Greece who were the "troublemakers" of the EU: Denmark for refusing to join various aspects of European integration/harmonization, and Greece for being extremely sloppy with their accounting (crazy to think that their ancestors invented math!).
But that was back in the "good old days".
Nowadays, we have new troublemakers: Hungary and Poland (and possibly Slovakia?) for disregarding the values expressed in the Copenhagen Criteria, most notably the non-negotioable concept of separation of powers (checks and balances). Essentially, they have been refusing to honour the accession treaties that they themselves chose to sign in order to join the EU (and to get free money). And now that they're in, they can never be kicked out.
    🤦‍♀

Cohesions funds are not free money. Every EU members pays in it's share and getting funds back. Hungary has paid in it's share and now is not getting it's money back according to the EU fundamental agreements. Make no mistake, this money is Hungary's earned money. For making it's market available for foreign companies to make profits, to compensate for the lack of competitiveness in various areas against western companies that have decades of advance, etc. The accusations are always very vague, avoiding to be clearly named. If it would, than we could measure how every country is aligning to it. But this is always avoided, making me to believe that these are nothing more, but political games for group interests, power and influence within the EU. By blocking these funds, the EU is the one who's not honoring the fundamental agreements of the organization. Don't forget, mainstream media is sponsored by interest groups and it is thinking for you, telling you what to believe.

The primary problem with a tiered EU as the current plans propose, is that member states have to pay the same, regardless of how integrated they are in the EU. This not only sets the precedent for unequal and undemocratic distribution of wealth, but also for the EU to transition from a trade union, to a full blown Empire, thereby losing its greatest strengths and gaining enough weaknesses to doom Europe to a future of zero democracies for hundreds of years. Not exactly a preferred outcome. The EU already have problems fully recognizing the realities of its edge members (such as Scandinavia and our welfare systems, as well as why they're critical), so further isolating us will not make us want more of the EU. It would more likely make us less interested in participating with trade within Europe and instead look for international trading partners who don't try to take away critical infrastructure, which will harm the EU on both the short and the long term, making more countries outside the core of that tier, reconsider their trading partners and allies. Put in other words, it could make countries like Hungary and Slovakia decide to leave the EU and NATO, in favor of a trade agreement and alliance with Russia and China. Not exactly a preferred outcome for Europe.
I know it sounds weird in most Europeans ears when I say that welfare is critical infrastructure, but there's a very, very good reason for that. Our wealth is completely and entirely dependent on the continuation of the welfare state. Why? because tax paid education, health and financial compensation to avoid extreme poverty, is essential for ensuring a well educated and healthy population, which in turn is essential for making higher quality products and services, which itself is required to earn the revenue needed for even paying the membership fees to the EU AND investing more in the military, without moving the entire country from a first world nation to a third world nation economically.
But can't we just make up for it in numbers, aka have more people to take on the work required to keep making the same amount of money, regardless of education? No. The Scandinavian populations aren't that big, so we can't just make up for it in sheer numbers. The population of Germany alone is almost 4 times the total population of Scandinavia. Sweden alone have a population of 10,42 million people, which is a little less than the combined population of Denmark and Norway. Bear in mind that that is despite Denmark already being tightly populated. But since Norway isn't a full member of the EU and thus doesn't pay the same rates as Sweden and Denmark, the true population comparison would be Sweden and Denmark vs. Germany or another large European population, like France. This gives us the results that the population of Germany is more than 5 times the population of Sweden and Denmark combined. And the population of France is more than 4 times, Italy is about 3,6 times, Spain is just shy of 3 times and Poland is a bit more than double the combined population of Sweden and Denmark. We can't just make up for it in sheer numbers, as we, quite simply, does not have the numbers advantage
