    The only reason I want to make my own tomato soup is because the ones I find in the can are always too sweet. The sugar ruins it for me. And we eat so much sugar in every canned product that I wish they would stop adding sugar. That’s why Americans are so Overweight. And why do people add sugar to cornbread. I will never figure that out. Tomato soup and cornbread should be savory; not sweet. ❤

    Just a heads up, the complete research shows that the mono-unsat. oils are NOT more healthy. While they do adjust the HLD/LDL ratios, the rate of progression of coronary disease is Exactly the same. Ouch! Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn explains the details & studies (Ridell, Vogel, Ong) in the clinically vetted presentation "Make Yourself Heart Attack Proof" There is plenty of oil in the whole plant foods. Thus some relatively small adjustments can render substantial health benefits. Thx.

    Tomatoes have sugar in them. Onions have so much that they can be caramelized. Yet there is added sugar. Can anyone say diabetes? I'm a foodie. I love the tastes and textures of fresh food. Added sugars and sometimes too much added salt just hides those flavors. A touch of salt can enhance flavors, a touch. I'd rather have the sugar inI a cannoli.

    I had to send a message, I love tomato - basil soup and this recipe looked great. I had fresh tomatoes and used about 10 lbs to make a large pot. Everything went as planned and the "stick blender" is a real time saver in getting the tomatoes and everything else blended. I did add about 1/3 cup fresh basil chopped small in the last 15 minutes of simmering along with 1/2 quart of heavy cream. I WAS IN HEAVEN when I took a taste !!!! You have to try this recipe as it is the absolute best and you will never go back to canned tomato soup again, Thanks !!!

    Bit late to the party but, Thank You SO much for this recipe. First reasonable recipe
    I've found that doesn't start off with "Canned, Store bought Tomato's"
    Your process for cooking Tomato's down, skin on, adds nutrients and naturally helps
    thicken the sauce from the start. Take out the onions and food milling it is exactly our
    base sauce! The Tomato Rue is genius. We grow our own garlic, onions, and Tomato's,
    So, add flour and butter, and chicken broth, (we all have that).............. Voila

    This recipe is a game-changer! Spending just 45 minutes for a homemade tomato soup is absolutely worth it. I'm a big tomato soup aficionado, and not long ago, I made a veggie soup with roasted tomatoes. The roux addition for thickening is genius. Can't wait to top mine with some fresh basil and dive in. Thanks for sharing this delightful treat!👍👍👍

  • @allrecipes
    @allrecipes  11 лет назад +1

    Thank you for your question. The soup needs to cook so that the vegetables completely soften up and can puree easily.If you prefer a chunkier soup, you can certainly cook it for a shorter period. Once you add the roux, you should cook the soup for a while to make sure the taste of flour is cooked out. Enjoy!

    This recipe is just what I was looking for to use up some very ripe tomatoes. Some were the last of my home crop and some were store bought. I used the immersion blender method to smooth the soup. It worked pretty well, and was certainly easy (careful not to splash!) though there were some skin bits left behind. I might simply need to blend it for longer, or maybe use the Ninja blender, being careful not to create a heat bomb. (Yes, I have cleaned the kitchen ceiling due to mishaps of that nature!)
    I added a cup of half and half at the very end, because I like creamy tomato soup best. The salt needed to be upped a bit to compensate. I also added a dash of allspice; not enough to notice, just enough for a warm complexity. Paired with grilled cheese, it had Hubby mmmmm-ing with pleasure. It really was delicious. Win!
    Many variations could be imagined using this excellent recipe as a base. Thanks a bunch!
