  • Here we see some trains at Conwy [CNW] on the NWCL, 14/10/2018. This was the first day of Transport for Wales operating rail services. Seen are TfW 175s and 158s, and also Virgin Trains 221s.

I remember the train being too big for this station that we had to move down the train just to get off. On the other side the train would move slowly through and would only stop when you put your arm out to signal it

That is correct. The platforms at Conwy are only long enough for 2 car trains and any 3 or 4 car trains that call there can only open one door. The station really should be upgraded, with longer platforms and an improved rail service. Prior to TfW closing it for several months during 2020, and making a complete mess of things in 2021, Conwy was one of the most used request stops in the UK with 64,442 entries and exits throughout 2019 (Source: WG analysis of ORR Estimates of Station Usage). Conwy is a major tourist destination along the North Wales Coast and, in my view anyway, has a strong case for an improved rail service.

nice video. this was one of the best days of my life because i hated ATW they just didnot care about the passengers at all i was so happy when TFW took over because we were getting new trains like lots of 153s and 170s and the trains that are replacing the 158s, 175s ill miss 158s then

Haha, I actually prefer ATW in some ways. Their livery and branding was a lot better than TfW's and they didn't just cancel services and not bother running them like TfW do sometimes. Also they didn't lie about things like TfW or set unachievable targets. What I like about TfW is that they're trying to improve services in Wales and they're supposed to bring more capacity and new stock, but it's taking so long to get what they have in service and they seem to be concentrating on the Core Valley Lines. It's almost like they don't care about the rest of Wales. Thanks for watching, I will probably miss all the units I have grown up with, Pacers, 153s, 158s, 175s and even 150s. It's going to be a while yet until the Sprinters and 175s are replaced, and the 158s will have to stay until the final 197s are in service because of ERTMS on the Cambrian lines.

Some trains I’ve been on were too big for this station so we had to move further down the train to get off. Going back the other way the train would run slowly through and only stop if you put your hand out to signal it

Conwy is a request stop, some trains call there on request. The platforms are only long enough for two carriages resulting in 3 car trains only opening 1 door to allow passengers off. It's a shame these days as it used to be one of the most used request stops pre 2020.

I went on an Arriva Trains Wales* Class 158 on Saturday (13 October) and I thought it sounded like a 159 inside.
*was still Arriva Trains Wales on Saturday 13 October. TfW didn't start until Sunday 14.

Yes, that's right, this video was all taken on the 14th just that most of the stock are still in ATW colours. The 159s are very similar to the 158 built at roughly they same time, however, I think the TfW 158s have different engines to the 159s.

158815-158862 (including TfW 158818-158841) have 350hp Perkins 2006-TWH engines (same as in all 165s/166s), all other "standard" 158s and the 159/1s have 350hp Cummins NTA855 engines, the 159/0s and the former TransPennine Express 158s have 400hp Cummins NTA855 engines, and the exported SRT 158s that do services such as the Thailand-Malaysia cross border service have 285hp Cummins NTA855 engines (same as the UK 150/153/155/156 engines). Some units are fitted with Voith T211r and others T211rz two stage hydraulic transmissions, but I'm not sure which variation is fitted to which units. The exception is TfW 158834 which has new Voith DIWARail transmissions. The whiny Voith transmission on all the other units drowns out a lot of the engine sound anyway; you have to be either outside or onboard with emergency hoppers open to notice the subtle difference really... Regarding the 159s I have Railway Magazine February 1992 with an article on the 159/0 build - it says how BREL insisted on fitting them out as 158s because they didn't agree to changes to the contract, but that they were "nice enough" to not apply the unit numbers, so that they could go to Babcock Rail to have the brand new interiors that they had just fitted ripped out and fitted with the "159" interiors, and of course the "159" running numbers applied...

Does anyone know whether the Class 67s on the Mk3s will continue to operate along this route?

Yes. Would you like to know the diagrams? I also have a video showing all the workings on the NWCL.

Mk4s are supposed to be coming in at the end of 2019, however, with the IEP late on the ECML mk3s might have to stay longer. We shall see. :)
