- The festive season can often bring out the best in TV SCHEDULES. But for this year, 2024, out of the five main broadcast channels here in the UK, has BBC ONE absolutely demolished the competition...?

Fun fact: 2008 was not only the last time Wallace & Gromit had a Christmas Day premiere, but also the last time EastEnders had two Christmas Day episodes.
It is literally like a time warp back to 2008 with Doctor Who, W&G, G&S, double EE and Outnumbered and now Labour are back in government as well, it's a strange feeling, to be honest.
We're pretty much planning our whole Christmas day around the new Wallace and gromit showing at 6:10pm lol
Even in Ireland lol
Yup.
is it a new film or a short.
i don't think its the queens greatest moments it doesn't have the in it i think its the band queen
The only Queen that was ever worth bothering about was Freddie's Team.
You'll see a lot of The SImpsons this Christmas on C4, as it's moving permanently to E4 in the new year, hence the constant airings.
What do you mean
@DarthDevil Channel 4 has moved The Simpsons over to E4 starting January 2025. E4 will be The Simpsons’ F2A permanent home.
@samstele will reruns still be on Channel 4 Saturday and Sunday
@DarthDevil i don't actually know
This might be the first time in living memory that the big film on BBC One doesn't immediately follow the [Monarch's] Speech at 3.10pm.
The schedules on ITV, 4 and 5 show exactly how important the BBC is!
the BBC have facilitated Jermaine Jenas, Gregg Wallace and Jimmy Savile
The kids and women are so lucky to have them.
One thing I was absolutely livid about last year was the showing of 'Home Alone 2: Lost in New York' on ITV, the film used to be shown on Channel 4 along with the first one but when ITV broadcast the second film last year they went and edited out my favourite scene from the film, when Marv gets electrocuted and briefly turns into a skeleton! A lot of people, including myself took to Twitter at the time expressing their disappointment that they had cut that bit out! But if you haven't seen that film Adam it's well worth a watch just for that one scene!😄😄😄
I watched yesterday evening can't remember which channel and yes they had cut that part out. I even pointed it out to the Mrs. They also trimmed down a lot of the other traps. Why bother even showing it if you're gonna edit out the best parts.
I thought this was going to be a complaint from a maga supporter about a different edit! 😕 😂
@@neilgodwin6531they took out my trumpie? 😢
Surprising lack of films on Christmas day for Ch5. I suppose like you said, they know they can't really compete much with BBC and ITV, especially when a much anticipated Wallace and Gromit film is coming on. Looks like they're making up for it on Boxing day though!
You know they won if they have wallace and gromit
I’m 100% watching the new ‘Wallace and Gromit’!
It’s on NFlix in the US from January 3.
@@Glamking1 Watch it before Trump imposes a tariff on it. 😂
UK still has exports it can genuinely be proud of! This is one....
They’ll probably have put Coronation Street on later because it’s going to have some post-watershed action for Christmas. Soon as 9 hits everyone will be dropping F-bombs.
24:30 BBC4 is supposed to be changing to being used by the Beeb solely for repeats of vintage programming, with any new content they might previously have shown being aired by BBC2 instead, so this is probably part of that change.
I love BBC 4 as an arts channel, but that's a shrinking demographic, tragically. There is so much in the BBC archives...I would love to see any surviving Quatermass series, for example. Hopefully it won't follow ITV 3 and start showing "Classic" Eastenders, but there was a soap called United about a football team that intrigues me
@@neilgodwin6531classic eastenders is already airing on Drama
They'll have a bit of a job getting new viewers for BBC4 if they just use it mainly as a channel for vintage programmes. It would probably have worked 10 years ago for that but they'll find it very difficult now with well-established channels like Talking Pictures TV that have a decently sized and dedicated audience for bygone TV.
@@neilgodwin6531 Classic Eastenders is already established on one of the UKTV channels (can't remember if its Watch or Drama) so I don't think BBC4 would be able to also do it. I wonder if the BBC still retain the repeat rights to the first 20 odd years of Neighbours, because Classic Neighbours might work as a a way of bringing in viewers of my age range (early 40s).
I love your repeats in red captions as it’s very helpful in showing what is worth missing as you probably seen it before.
My wife was literally just watching ‘The Holiday’ 5 mins ago. She seems to watch it every Christmas 😅
What a JOY it was to see this video pop up for another year. I am SO impressed with the BBC's Christmas schedule this year! 😍🥰
Put your hands up if you still watch TV channels!!!!
Absolute dog shit! Repeats, repeats and more repeats with a good sprinkling of the same handful of films we get every year. Streaming services really have killed off terrestrial tv. It's not even scraping the barrel, it's scraping the last dregs of butter out the tub and it's got mixed in burnt toast crumbs from the previous scraper. 😂
I couldn't give a rats ass about Gavin & Stacy so literally the only thing new of interest for me personally is the new Wallace & Gromit. When they are repeating things from the same day you know they have piss all to put on.
I'm only really looking forward to Weakest Link, Wallace And Gromit, and Gladiators on New Years Day if I'm honest. Though I’m definitely going to watch Beetlejuice on Christmas Eve, even though I've seen it many times before. I think part of the reason I'm excited about that is because it's in a post-watershed time slot, so thankfully my family will be spared my rant about channels getting the editing scissors out because of them showing 15 rated films in the early afternoon.
thank you for your hard work making this video Christmas viewing sorted now 😊Merry Christmas 🎅
Merry Christmas to you too! 🌲✨
as a staunch royalist i have my dinner after His Majesty The King finishes
Zulu is definitely seen as a Christmas/Boxing Day by some, particularly of the older generation. Maybe becuase its such a classic film and gets repeated a lot around this time of year? Couldn't tell you myself.
I remember this film being shown on Christmas Day/Boxing Day 1976 (I think?). So definitely a film to show over the holidays.
I'm 68, and I don't see the Xmas connection myself
Yeah, the BBC EASILY wins this Christmas. I mean Doctor Who, Wallace & Gromit, Call the Midwife, EastEnders, Gavin and Stacey, Outnumbered. Pretty much something for everyone on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, how could any channel compete with THAT? Honestly I don't blame the other channels for just not trying this year, all the BIG and exciting shows are on BBC One! And I think it also goes to show how important the BBC is as a cultural British institution and British TV just wouldn't be the same without it.
Can't wait for the BBC to be defunded.
Dr Who is terrible these days, and I don't care about any of the rest you mentioned. You BBC shills are great comedy.
I agree 100%, but it's guaranteed that there are people out there screaming for us to be locked up for daring to defend the BBC 😂
@@carolfan4466 “BBC shills”? or people who enjoy the content they put out, actually.
@@friendlyotaku9525 Do many people still watch that utter garbage called EastEnders? And why did my other comment get erased while the comments supporting the BBC get to stay on here?
Great video as always, but I have to ask, where did you get the hat. I love it, it has all the Scandinavian flags together! I want one. 😊
It's from Kelly Louise Killjoys merch site!
@@AdamMartyn Excellent, thanks.
Adam have you heard that from January The Simpsons will be moving to E4 that’s why there’s a lot of Simpsons on ch 4’s Xmas schedule
BBC showed Inside Out because of the sequel's success.
I wish Channel 4 would Air Sonic The Hedgehog 2 & The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on The Run for Christmas.
8:00 That's the 30 greatest moments of the rock band, not the monarch lol
Channel 5 seems to be obsessed with both to be fair
There are 10 New Episodes of House of games, 14 Episodes of Celeb Mastermind, 8 episodes of Only Connect and 10 episodes of University Challenge over the festive season.
The latter 3 are 3 of my favourite programmes- I love Monday Quiz Night, so I'm going to be a happy bunny! 😊
Marry Christmas adam Martin ❄☃❄
youtube suggested your Christmas tapes video and loved it and have been watching alot of your back log.
Unwind with ITV on Christmas Eve going into Christmas Day is at 2:35, not 3:25. Also, Why Repeat it's a wonderful life at 3:50am. Random time to air it
Thanks for giving the result in the title, so I don't have to watch the video and will just leave the TV on that channel.
This Christmas, Blu-ray wins for me 😊
Just want to say nice one for this video. I had planned to try watch the Bullseye xmas special but as its a repeat i wont bother. (In Ireland i have to use workarounds to watch ITV as its not broadcast here now)
Is this a repeat of Jim Bowen, or a reboot?
The Tiger Who Came to Tea? I think I'd rather watch Sean Lock's The Tiger Who Came For A Pint! 🤭🤣💯
Chicken Run is made by Aardman Animantions, the same people who make Wallace and Gromit. That's why they've chosen to show that movie.
31:10 *OH HELLO THERE!!*
The ghost story for Christmas have been BBC2 for the last few years with repeats of the older 70s ones on BBC4. This year's is man size in marble by Edith Nezbit (a classic story if you ask me even if it isn't M.R. James) so I've got high hopes.
A ghost story for Christmas is the one thing I insist on watching on Christmas eve, I just love those cosy spooky stories. If it's on I highly recommend catching the exorcism too. It's available on RUclips if it's not on TV this year.
I will wager a guess that three films on Channel 5:The Holiday,The Man In The Iron Mask and Catch Me If You Can will be edited quite heavily at the early-mid afternoon times.
Wallace & Gromit v Gavin & Stacey is going to be the Barbie v Oppenheimer of the Christmas Day ratings. Also, whoever the continuity announcer is for BBC One on Christmas Day has a very exciting job on their hands.
Wallace & Gromit solos
Duncan Newmarch
Gavin and stacy is that show with that horrible little fat man we tried to send off to America until even they got sick of him, right?
not Gervais, the other one...
I wonder if Corden has lost viewers to G &S? I certainly can't watch anything with him in it any more
That's tv is showing its a wonderful life also on christmas eve at 10.25am
My PC and consoles have WON...
...yet again!
Same with me.
Ain't that the truth! 💯
i'm having my first christmas outside of the UK, i'll absolutely miss wallace & gromit 😭😭
Also the reason it might be on 845 is because the watershed is on till nine so they can get away with some storylines after the watershed it might be a bit too intense to put it on before that that could be a reason why it’s on later
Nice video Adam
Thanks Roger!
@@AdamMartyn No worries!
18:12 THAT'S ON FOR 2 HOURS!
Easily, Doctor Who will be the the biggest ratings and disapointment disaster followed by that Gavin and Stacey programme
I’m glad that I stopped watching the BBC and it’s awful Christmas offerings. Not paying the license fee has given me much more enjoyment..🤮
Sky News today:
... two MasterChef celebrity Christmas specials, a Celebrity MasterChef Christmas Cook Off and a Strictly Festive Extravaganza, pulled from the BBC's festive schedule.
That'll account for some repeats & promotions in the BBC schedules
What's with so many 40s, 50s and 60s films. Do They believe that only people over 60 watch TV now.
Considering all the money the bbc bullly out of people I think that is abysmal. Wallace and Gromit hopfully will be as good as usual
Agreed.
"Bully" 😂
@@neilgodwin6531 Why are you laughing? My elderly parents shouldn't have to pay for the rubbish the BBC is putting out.
this year is Wallace and Gromit vs Gavin and Stacey is new barbenheimer
No Christmas Top Of The Pops?
Top of the pops has been cancelled for years now
@FrenchFriesrGood okay, that shows how often I watch TV. 😂
Probably on BBC4, as that's where they show the repeats now.
It’s quite good when there’s nothing decent on to give us a break!
It's A Wonderful Life has been on That's TV yesterday
'Queen's 30 Greatest Moments', is to do with the Rock band, not the late monarch. 🤣🤦♂
Essay time.
* The Christmas episodes of mystery shows are all lined up nicely for Mum - Sister Boniface, Madame Blanc, Death in Paradise, Beyond Paradise.
* Stereotypical 'stick it on for your Grandad' stuff, Zulu. I remember QI once going over how, for all the mainstream talk and jokes about The Great Escape, it actually hasn't been on that often. Bit of 70s-stalgia by the media? The older movies are a bit of a Yule Log, stick 'em on with mute for some filler in the corner when the extended family are round. That's my memories of those on Boxing Day, sorry, St. Stephen's Day for the Irish out there. 😉 Then turn off the telly for the serious business - boys v. girls quiz!
* Sometimes the Alternative Message is pastiche in nature - The Simpsons in 2004, famously. Adam Hills doing a poem about London 2012, I remember - sometimes it's deadly serious - the notorious Deepfaked Queen from a few years ago, Stephen Fry last year reflecting on the impact of recent events and the horrible behaviour here springing from those events - so it'll be interesting to see which way this year goes.
* The Great Pottery Throw Down - essential viewing with Siobhan McSweeney hosting. Bit like C4 daytime quiz 1001 Things You Should Know, the actual quiz was terrible, but Sandi Toksvig hosted it, so I'm tuning in.
* Mrs. Brown is an Irish icon, Brits trashing it is considered a personal attack around these parts... 😉 No, not really, but come on, let's all be nice. Put it this way: do you see us crapping on Gavin and Stacey? Adam has the right approach: Don't like, dont watch. Sadly 'social' media has changed that to: 'don't like, don't watch, call anyone who does like it stupid, try to get it cancelled so only what you like is allowed anymore, and if they don't like what you like that's unforgivable and must be punished.' That all said, as a fan, I must admit it's better live nowadays, the TV show is in its Simpsons phase now: it's there, it's fine, but it's not as good as it used to be. The point about 'a long gone age' is a fair one, the character of Agnes Brown is over 30 years old and like Father Ted - don't start, Britain, in Ireland itself you *do* speak those two in the same sentence - was created in the 90s as a send up of very Irish cultural ideas from, as you say, a bygone time. Compare, if you can find it, to the movie based on the original books and radio series, starring Anjelica Huston (no, really!) as Mrs. Brown. It's played as a drama, rather than a comedy, and it's a very different experience. If you’re in that club that gets the feel, especially if you've got Irish in the blood, it's gold. That's missing in parts of Britain, which just leaves a 70s bad taste in the mouth if that applies to you. Doesn't help that Brendan O'Carroll's standup back then was of the straight-to-video, 'Too Hot for TV' variety. I steered clear of the live shows expecting it to be like that, but I prefer the TV show because it's watered down enough for me to enjoy it.
* Movies. Of course, one must make time for The Snowman, Father Christmas and Home Alone on Channel 4. I see ITV has pinched the second movie from them. I remember a couple of times in recent years, C4 announcers would 'apologise' to viewers when they showed it, all but giving them a content warning about a certain someone's appearance... 😏 I'll fire up the streamers for Miracle on 34th Street, along with Matilda and Mrs. Doubtfire, the other 2 which featured the 'other' big child star of the 90s, Mara Wilson. I loved her blog where each post would end with her stringing words together to create a plausible sounding title for a BBC show. And of course, you must put on - at some point, doesn't have to be on the big day if you haven't got room, but some time during the week - The Muppet Christmas Carol. That's an order. For other versions, we also like Patrick Stewart's version, and Kelsey Grammer's musical version. For more non-festive staples in our house, Back to the Future, Galaxy Quest, Cool Runnings, Blackbeard's Ghost, Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
* Finally, on RTE there's a carol service on Christmas Eve in prime time. Time warp, anyone? I'm catching that because of Marty Whelan, Ireland's Eurovision host, on hosting duties. I met him in 2013, absolute class act.
If Wallace and Gromit wasn't there, BBC1 would still have won easily, with Nicola Coughlan bringing brand new eyes to Doctor Who, including her own, amusingly enough. She is a one woman hit machine. I mean, it's almost embarrassing how stacked One is this year. Strictly, Doctor Who, Wallace and Gromit, Gavin and Stacey, EastEnders, Mrs. Brown. "Stop it, he's already dead!" ITV have just surrendered already. Emmerdale and Coronation Street, and that's it. I've not seen such a one-sided contest for years. Cracking lineup, Gromit!
All the channels apart from BBC1 just thought that they made a load of Xmas specials 10 to 15 years ago so why should they bother again so soon.
Also, I remember Christmas Day 2015, when Channel 4 had done some live shoutouts before and after the programmes. I thought that was a nice touch.
23rd Dec - All creatures great and small xmas special on C5 as an honorable mention :)
I AM DEFINITELY WATCHING THE NEW WALLACE AND GROMIT FILM ON CHRISTMAS DAY!
also yes, the hype of bake off is dead......I think...
Doctor Who Christmas Special
Gavin and Stacey
Call the Midwife
Gladiators
Sophie Ellis Bextor
Wallace and Gromit
The King
Strictly 20 Years and Christmas Special
Outnumbered
EastEnders
What year is this? 2008? Might as well be with these incredible lineup! BBC buried ITV’s reboot of Bullseye in deep ice, and melted Channel 4’s Snowman and the Snowdog (though I love both iterations!)
There's been nothing special about Doctor Who for ten years.
I watch these every year
When will you do a history of S4C or a review of the S4C 1995-2007 idents.
its not hard when itv don't really bother anymore
Reason why Corrie is on late at 8.45pm is this idea of defensive scheduling by the UK channels. They are aware of people who enjoy watching all the big soaps back to back. So they organise the schedule in a way that facilitates that it's why.
Emmerdale 7pm-7.30 ITV
EastEnders 7.45pm-8.15pm BBC
Coronation Street 8.45pm - 9.15pm ITV
Those who watch Hollyoaks anyway watch via All 4 as they already have all the eps over Christmas available for viewers to watch in own time. Not a problem.
That's why soaps are always on a weird times and especially during Christmas. It's to accommodate those who watch all of them. It also supports both channels not losing viewers to the rival channel because one soap might have a bigger story arch for example.
Sick of repeats. Why can’t we have more recent stuff, especially films?
11:58 - 12:03
Enjoy it while it lasts, because Channel 4 may greenlight a live-action remake in 2032 to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
I want to see the Ross Kemp version of a Christmas carol which was on ITV in the early 00s if I remember right
Wallace and Gromit hit Aussie cinemas on 19 Dec. Can’t find any TV showings though
Gonna be recording a lot of the classics on BBC FOUR in the run up to Xmas day😁😁
Die Hard will air on 4Seven on Christmas Eve at 9pm
Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Monsters vs. Aliens seem topical.
who needs the double edition of tv times. where is channel 5,s usual double header of chitty chitty bang bang and oliver back to back though. looking forward to the roger moroe documentary, wallace and gromit, and gavin and stacey. i think bbc has spent money on their premieres.
Some random thoughts -
Repeating on the same day, when most people can time shift programmes simply by recording them seems so 1970s.
Stephen Fry is always a win, so I'll probably watch that.
I love Bake Off, so that's a definite to watch. People clearly still enjoy it, since it has a spin-off, Extra Slice, with Jo Brand, Tom Allen plus other celebs, the fees for whom will be hefty. Channel 4 wouldn't commission the spin-off if the original wasn't hugely popular. It just doesn't have the hype of Strictly or ITV 'talent' shows.
Ironically, no Countdown on 4.
Mastermind, Only Connect and UC are the usual Monday night fare for me, so the usual, but with 'celebs'. I love these quizzes.
It's refreshing to see b&w classic films on the BBC. Today's viewers are usually deprived of classics like Citizen Kane, Casablanca, and so on, though the success of the Talking Pictures channel on Sky shows how popular they still are amongst film 'buffs' like me, so seeing some old films on mainstream TV will be a real education to those raised on Die Hard, Harry Potter and the MCU. Though Rocky Horror isn't b&w it's a genuine classic, and I'll be struggling not to join in 'Time Warp' and 'Hot Patootie'. My neighbours might not be fans.
For those of us of 'a certain age', Morecambe and Wise WERE Christmas. Genuine family entertainment, and screamingly funny.
Ghostbusters Afterlife isn't as funny as the original, but seeing the surviving original cast, and a CGI Harold Ramis (Egon) genuinely brought tears to my eyes.
No to Gavin and Stacey. I used to enjoy it, but James Corden's recent behaviour has ruined it for me.
It's good to see so much praise, not just from AMTV, for the BBC schedule. There's an organised anti- BBC campaign on social media, and the Beeb needs our support now, more than ever.
For the first time in years, I am genuinely excited to see the schedules.
Happy Xmas 🎉
Hey Adam Why Didn’t You Discuss The Schedule For RTÉ ONE? Because The Premiere Of Disney/Pixar Toy Story 3 Is On RTÉ ONE AT Half 12 On Christmas Day

Hey Adam. A great video and yeah BBC1 definitely wins (and bbc2 isn’t bad either).
One thing I don’t want to say though. The ‘why do we do this’ about Mrs Brown’s Boys or even the slight ‘the bbc have to do religion’ as if it really shouldn’t really be ther (Christmas is about religion!).
Of course there are things you don’t like but the broadcasters have to appeal to everyone. Personally, I think Doctor Who is rubbish, but I don’t moan about it or think it shouldn’t be there. For those that like it great, I can go and watch something else. Same goes for the religious stuff or Mrs Brown.
Where's the jimll fix it xmas special 😆 🎄

Legal reason broadcaster need them to show King's speech until boxing day I assume
Home Alone 2 is definitely a Christmas movie. Ghostbusters Afterlife was pretty miserable to watch. Also way too many Shrek movies this Christmas. One is bad enough. 😆
Afterlife was sad, CGI Harold Ramis brought tears to my eyes, but ultimately, I enjoyed it, and Paul Rudd never makes a bad movie.
I won't be watching Home Alone 2, especially if they include that cameo of the Orange Ghost of the White House
