  • In this video, I will show you how to add additional VST folders so Ableton LIVE can see all of your VST plugin locations. This was in response to several viewers not seeing the Spitfire Audio LABS instruments show up in Ableton Live after installation.
    VST3 Compatibility:
VST3 plugins are NOT supported in earlier versions of LIVE. The latest version (10.1) has introduced VST3 compatibility. More information here:

Thank you so much, I moved from FL to Ableton and I couldn't use most of my plugins, THX. My Ableton teacher told me to reinstall them but let's say that it's not that easy if you use keygens etc. tip for FL users moving to Ableton: create a shortcut into image line vsts, and you'll be able to use some stock FL VST in ableton which is nice to have too.

    Simeon..... Simeon..
This! ..... this video...to me.. was a God send...
Damn...i was getting depressed and nearly giving up on my Win 10 desktop....
Believe me..a couple of weeks ago,,.i even started checking some iMac prices and setups.... as my old Macbook Pro was opening everything in Ableton just fine
(for a week i couldn’t explain it ..then i realized that, it was actually opening the VSL libraries using AUs instead of VST2s, so the same problem was occurring . it was just camouflaged.)
i was unable to run both Native Instruments libraries and VSL Libraries..simultaneously ....and it was driving me completely crazy..!
i talked to VSL’s people/support...i even tried a Windows 10 and Ableton Fresh Install...
    nothing worked..
And such a simple thing... with the shortcut..
i mean.... |sigh| .. Thank YOU ..really ! Really appreciated it..
    Finally i can make Music.
ps: btw.... it’s pretty rudimentary.... i believe.. Ableton only being able to have one single source for VST2 plugIns..
No scoring built in, and no support for MPE....i might give it up, and return to Logic Pro X.
Have you ever used any other DAW, other than Ableton ?
thanks again for this.. really .

Im new to daws and got a few free trial versions and so far the whole vst management thing has not been fun so ill try this tip and hope it works with other daws as well . I have managed to get a couple random vst plugins to show up in daws but only about 10% of them and seemingly completely at random depending on which daw i try . thank you - well a couple hours later and i only managed to get 3 vst plugins added to ableton . i think i need to just do a system restore and start all over installing daws and watch a few where to put/make/install plugins and plugin folders to work universally with daws as I dont have a single file location anymore but a few like steinberg / vst2, vst3 , my downloads, deskstop , yadda yadda . its a real hassle for a beginner to learn and just makes me lean towards buying daws that already have a lot of sounds and plugins preinstalled which usually seem to be the pricey ones but as a beginner that might be worth it for me because im spending hours nightly trying to figure out plugin installs and file locations instead of actually learning the daws . im being a bit ridiculous with wasting time . i actually bought studio one artist version and its ok but not too many sounds in it . oh well , this it how things go when your learning not too mention i just got a pc coming from ipad only world so that doesn't help with windows file management skills or lack there of.

The way I usually do it is by using WINDOW CAPTURE, and then selecting the open VST Window. When there are times a VST will not Window Capture Correctly, then I have to resort to using DESKTOP Capture and cropping things down around the VST GUI. I have this problem when using HALionSonic 3, Pianoteq, and many UVI Workstation libraries. They have some of their dialog boxes that pop up in a NEW Window that is not integrated into the primary GUI window so OBS cannot see it, that is when I have to use Desktop Capture.

I am totally new to plugins and Ableton so been reading and watching alot. I've read about having the libraries on a separate drive (which is where I've been installing spitfire material). What is the purpose of separate dll location and such? I've only had small success with analog lab lite and my arturia controller that it and ableton lite came with. Trying to figure this out

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  4 года назад

It's all about maximizing performance. If your operating system, virtual instruments, music applications, sample library content, etc. are all on the same drive then your computer is pulling everything from a single source. Some virtual instruments rely on streaming samples from drive storage so it is always best to put it on the fastest drive you have, preferably an SSD which is typically much faster than a spinning hard drive; it is just a good way to balance the workload on your computer.
It is also a good idea to have operating system and applications separate from your other content as you can make back ups of your operating system drive more convenient in the event you need to restore your system for any reason.
So what I have currently is:
      Operating System Drive
      Project Drive
      Virtual Instrument Drive
      Sample Content Drive
I also have a few external USB drives for project backup and archival purposes.
You will get there, just take one step at a time and continue to do what you are doing which is watching, learning and experimenting with things. You will eventually find out what works best for you and begin to start creating some amazing music.
Happy New Year and thanks again for watching and please keep asking questions becuase the question never asked, the answer is always no. ;^)

    • @Chaotic_Enigma
      @Chaotic_Enigma 4 года назад

@@PraiseTracks ahh ok will take note about the separate vst. Right out the gate my setup is operating system and vst on internal ssd and libraries on external ssd, which I will use for projects until I get a 2nd external in a few months. Now if I can just get spitfire to work for me without error 3 and 5 lol. I reviewed your video about the file paths in settings of the LABS app(which I wasn't aware of so thanks for that one), reviewed their video on the matter and things look ok but still no luck. I don't know if there's something I need to route, turn on or adjust in Ableton or not. I can open analog lab 4 lite and UVI with no issues so it's got me stumped.

how different are ableton, cakewalk, fl studio, garageband etc. in terms of feature and sounds?
which one is the best for windows be it free or pay DAW?

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  4 года назад

Each DAW has its own workflow. Ableton LIVE is a non-linear DAW as it works on the concept of working with loops and sections of songs, very powerful for love performance. GarageBand is an Apple only DAW that is similar to Logic which is also Mac OS only. I am not too familiar with Fruity Loops but from what I have heard it is very powerful.
In my opinion Cakewalk by BandLab is the best DAW for someone like yourself who is just starting to learn. Cakewalk is Free and is full featured right out of the box and they have a fantastic community of users and the development team is making it more powerful with each update. I would recommend visiting the official Cakewalk Discuss Forum as it is loaded with great resources; you can find it here:

Even the 32-bit version isn't 'seen' by the program on my newer Windows 10 PC. Ive tried putting it in various different VST folders and it's visible in all the folders, but not in Ableton or Komplete Kontrol. Interesting because I tried on another PC (also Windows 10) that Kompete Kontrol and the VST was found. Both are 64 bit so it's not that making a difference. Hmmm.

    • @PraiseTracks

The issue is VST3; Abelton Live does not support VST3 in any version but the latest 10.1.

Rickey, If you are on Windows, Look at PREFERENCES and check out the PLUGINS TAB. Yo should see a setting to use VST3 SYSTEM FOLDERS (On or OFF), as well as a USE VST3 CUSTOM FOLDER (ON/OFF). If you pick the entire VST folder at that location then any additional plugins would also be scanned and made available. You might have some sort of Sub Folder in Ableton Live named Toontrack as that is the default install location for Superior Drummer.

Sadly I tried this on my Windows 10 PC using Ableton Live 9 Lite and it didn't work. First I tried dragging the shortcut into the chosen folder as you demonstrated, rescanned. No joy. Then I actually copied and pasted the LABS (64 Bit).VST3 into the correct folder thus bypassing the 'shortcut'. Ableton can't see it there even though it's clearly there when I look in Explorer. Interestingly, my Komplete Kontrol software can't read the LABS VSTs either so I do wonder if the problem might be with Spitfire software (?). I've just tried to find this plug in using SoundForge 12 Pro. As I scan for VST's, I can actually see the LABS file being found but then when I look into the VST plug in list, it's not there. It seems to be cloaked in some way. Completely stuck now!

So Live 9 does not support VST3. They just introduced VST3 support in the latest Live 10.1 update. I would try using the VST2 version and see if that makes a difference.
Here is an additional article concerning installing VSTs in Live.
      help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000349184-VST-AU-plug-in-doesn-t-appear-in-Live

So it looks like LIVE 10.1 is now available here: www.ableton.com/en/blog/live-10-1-is-here/
      Also new in Live 10.1:
Freeze tracks that contain sidechain routing.

Use your VST3 plug-ins in Live.

I wanted to install some plugins, and got the raw .dll plugins, but had NO idea where to put them.
I already have the free Komplete Kontrol plugins, and I thought of making a folder called "Ableton Plugs" or something like that, and insert the Komplete Kontrol folder, and the two raw .dll plugins into that folder.
However now, my shit is broken..
That might also be because I set Ableton to scan my entire PC for .dll folders and plugins, cuz I thought I could just drop them off somewhere and Ableton would recognize them then.
This was a bad idea, and I don't know what to do.

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  4 года назад

Bennie, it will be alright 🤓 I think that sometimes when we run into a problem it helps us find a solution. The main thing is to keep things simple. With VSTs there are sometimes dependencies on where things are installed, folder structure, etc.. If I were you I would just roll back and remove what you did and go with some basic VST folder locations. With Native Instruments it is always good to install using Native Access. You can specify target folders and locations there I think.
The way I have all of my plugins setup is 2 main VST folders on my D drive (1 for 32 bit VSTs and another for 64bit). Most plugin installations will ask you where you want to install them so you can point them to the locations you set up.
With VST 3 I just use the default location which is on the C drive.
Always use the installation the plugin provides if it applies, I know that some VSTs are sort of self contained.
I hope that is helpful, just take a step back and try again, believe me I have been there many times.
Let me know how things progress.

@@PraiseTracks I have undone what I did, and have taken a step back as you told me to.
I am going to rethink this, and try to find a better way of handling it. Probably watch a few videos on how it all really works (I am very very bad at handling plugins, and have close to 0 basic knowledge on it). I am going to search for my main "VSTPlugins" folder, and maybe try to directly put the .dll files in there. I just really can't find it.
Thank you for taking the time to respond!

Good news, so glad you were able to make progress on this. Once you get things going, things will be a lot smoother going forward. The main thing is to stay consistent in where things are installed.
      You are on you way!

I did this and it didn't work. I think something with my Spitfire: Labs installation didn't work properly. Also, my default VST folder path is different. It goes, Windows (C:), Program Files, Steinberg, and then VstPlugins. When I first installed labs, a folder with spitfire stuff showed up in there, but there's no .dll file. I don't know what I did wrong, and I can't find any of the other files for Labs, it was all thrown into the VST folder. But like I said, no .dll. I can't get a hold of their support team either. They said they were too busy helping other people. It's a shame I really want to use this awesome plugin but as of now I just can't.
(Edit): I got LABS in Ableton but when I open it, it says error number 1.

OK, I am so sorry you are having problems with this. I tell you what if you are not a subscriber please do so and click notifications. I am planning on doing some sort of livestream LABS triage to go over some ways to have some possible fixes.
You can also reach me by email: praisetracks@gmail.com We will get this done!

OK, so I did the LABS livestream today (you might catch the replay, if you missed it live). Funny thing was I ran into a crazy bug myself as I was going through the various troubleshooting procedures. I think it only affects the STRING 2 LABS but it was interesting doing this live as you never knew what was going to happen.
I submitted a ticket to Spitfire so hopefully things will get figured out and I will share my experience of course.
Also on the Ableton Live note; I downloaded and installed the latest version and it seems they have included some settings for custom VST folders which I touched on a little in today’s stream.
If you watch, I hope you can find something to help but as always let me know.

I have not taken a look at this on my MacBook but will check it out. I am also updating to the latest build of LIVE 10 to see if there have been any changes to folder management since this video. Thanks so much for watching and the feedback.

So I checked with the latest update on both Windows and Mac versions and they do allow you to set a custom folder for both VST and VST3 locations.
This tip is probably still useful in the case where you have more than one VST folder location.
For VST3s I typically install to the default due to certain plugin contingencies.

@@PraiseTracks Hi. Yes, it allows you to set a custom folder for VST and VST3, but on the Mac Ableton doesn't read alias (aka shortcut) folders/files from the Plugin directories. You're trying to do something different than what I need, but the reason I know it doesn't read them is because I tried to create a workaround using alias files for something else. Long story short, what I wanted to do is effectively merge both my VST and VST3 plugins into one folder. I usually prefer to leave default install locaions where they naturally are, because some plugins aren't smart enough to remember changed locations, and it can cause update and management issues. Anyways, the idea was to create alias files for the VST plugins, and use those aliases in the VST3 folder. It's rather annoying when you have a lot of plugins and you have to dive into 2 separate folders and remember which ones are in which directory. This is possible on a PC, but not a Mac.

jaydekaytv , so this is something I have discovered and that is Symbolic Links. They work a little different than ordinary shortcuts so that might be an alternative. More info here:

Apologies if this is something you have already tried. I mainly use LIVE on my PC.
      All the best.

Ok, watching the video I forgot it was talking about Spitfire LABS. You set the install location for the VST inside of the Spitfire App. Once you find that path you can create the shortcut as described in the video.
I have a couple of Spitfire LABS installation videos on the channel that might help. They are older but should help with the plugin paths.
