Saturday night session: Rhodes Mark 1 Stage piano (Avion Retro Flyer) and Sequential Prophet 10

First - let me apologize, the video is pretty bad/bright. Maybe just don't watch the video. Tab over and do something else while you listen...
Anyway, I rearranged my studio (you probably wouldn't notice) and installed the Avion Studios Retro Flyer preamp into the Rhodes. Needless to say - it's all hooked up and the tremolo you're hearing is coming straight from the Retro Flyer preamp.
I thought I might enjoy the Prophet 10 on top, but I'm not so sure about it. I've actually still had a lot of trouble fitting this into my studio. I think I just do way better with FX riddled synths. I'm not sure what it is. The Prophet hasn't made its way into any of my music really.
In the first piece (made up) - I use both of them. Maybe some sort of slow funk? I'm just not much of a pianist to really claim how to make this sort of music, but hey, it was kinda fun and that was the point.
The second track is something I made back in 2011, on a rainy day in April. I recall I wrote it when I was feeling very sad about my Dad having passed the year before. I really enjoy playing this, but I do really like the original, which you can listen to here: / beneath-the-weight-of-...
The third track is The Great Pumpkin Waltz by Vince Guaraldi.
The final track was just me messing around, I didn't have any idea what I was playing when I sat down, and that becomes obvious pretty immediately...

Feels like being late at a jazz bar, everything is calm and the other musicians have packed up for the night and the keys player is just serenading the bartender and night owls. Makes me think of Hemingway's "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place

Ahhhhh! There it is! This video just popped up on my feed and answered my question! Yes Indeed! The Avion Retro Flyer is way cool! I actually shipped my Rhodes Mark I Stage to Morgen to be restored (mine was found by a contractor friend from Tulsa next to a dumpster!). Once Morgen had it all finished I drove to Columbia Missouri to pick her up and bring her home safe and sound! Funny... my wife and I also have a heart for senior rescue dogs. I like to think I am giving this Rhodes of mine a new lease on life! And it certainly brings me great pleasure! The Retro Flyer is fantastic! Note: You would not believe all the electric pianos Morgen has amassed awaiting a new life - it's just overwhelming! Every make and model (and color variation) you could possibly ever imagine!
Yes - the Retro Flyer is really great and sounds so good. Looks like yours had quite an adventure.
I agree about restoring equipment - It's nice to be stewards to the gear during their time in our care. I have almost begun enjoying repairing them more than playing them, lol.
I restored a fender rhodes 73 stage over 2 years and was always trying to get the best mix into my daw.ok into cab but not the daw via mixer. Replacing the vol tone controls with the flyer is a superb enhancement. In fact outstanding. Perfect into mixer and rich harmonics.

Hey thanks - that means a lot to me, hearing that. Every day I feel I am a worse musician than I was the day before. I watch my old videos and think "Wow, I did something great." And am never that impressed with what I do today. Job, family, everything else that happens in life - makes me spend less time with my music, but I still have fun, I guess that's what matters - so it's nice to hear the stuff I still create is enjoyable.
When I was 17 - I was writing full songs with drums, guitar, piano, vocals... and now I don't do 1/4 of that! But yeah, I keep hitting the record button I guess, which is what it's all about!

The Moog and the Rhodes go together like a stamp to a letter. Ain't no combination better.
This isn't a moog on top though! I put the Prophet 10 on... But yeah, maybe I'll switch it. I just don't really have a better place for the Prophet 10 then!!!
@@MIDERA My mistake. I thought it was the Matriarch. The Prophet 10 sounds amazing with it. Some very Moogist tones. Great performance. I really enjoyed it. Reminds me of jazz tracks of the 70's.
Ah, gotcha. Yeah, I may prefer the Moog on there for the performance aspect of them and the arp that’s on it.
@@MIDERA I've got to admit that I'm very impressed with the Prophet 10's sound. It really sounds wonderful with the Rhodes.
It's really hard to determine whether the Moog or the Prophet 10 would sound nicer with it. Usually, a Mini Moog or an ARP Odyssey with a Rhodes or Wurli is a staple for a jazz keyboardist style of the 70's, but when I really think about it the Prophet 5 would have been involved as well because it's more versatile as a poly synth over a mono synth.
So soothing. Warm and comforting. Is your stuff totally improv? It just has the perfect feels.
With the first track - the few chords I played on the rhodes were not improved. The second two tracks were all things I knew how to play. The last track was completely improved, and probably a bit of a disaster! Thanks. I am in love with this Rhodes.

Lovely vibe... I have the new Prophet too.. I think it does amazing solo sounds esp with the unison modes... also had a 1972 Minimoog until a few months ago but don't miss it with the REV4!
You sold the minimoog after getting the REV4? That’s crazy talk! The minimoog has three oscillators compared to the two in the REV4. But I really do like the mono mode on the REV4.

@@MIDERA in reality I didn't use Minimoog too much because it was too temperamental... I also had the reissue but the original one sounded better... I don't miss either of them... the REV4 can do pretty much everything what I want from a Mini... btw I never used the Mini in 3 osc mode as it is typicall to use the 3rd osc for modulation (LFO).. in fact personally I found the best sounds to be one oscillator!

Wow, this is all news to me. Very cool. I did learn a bit about that third oscillator from Matt Johnson on one of his videos. But yeah, I’d likely never own one and the matriarch feels like a good consolation prize. Didn’t think the REV4 would match, but I’ve been enjoying it with the Rhodes quite a bit! Great stuff. Many thanks for the lovely playing. I see you added a retro flyer. Your wallet must be on its knees..... Prophet 10, Mki and the retro flyer. ;) Did you get the Rhodes voiced and tuned? I sold a lot of bits to get my Rhodes into shape including adding the Retro flyer. All worth it. Best piece of music equipment I ever bought.
Yeah - it's not been my best set of moments with impulsivity. My Rhodes came already voiced and tuned (via Chicago Electric Piano Co). It was basically ready to go. I added the Retro Flyer (which I'd recommend to everyone). I will agree that the Rhodes is the best piece of gear I've ever bought as well.
What P10 patch did you use ? Was it one of factory patches or you own ?
I made that patch, I think I overwrote patch 233.
