I get some sick background vocals out of this with the solo-voices feature in the Harmony module here. You need a kick-ass vocalist to really make this Harmony module of the plugin work magic.
Just so people are aware, Melodyne 4 essential is bundled with Nectar 3. When you download Nectar 3, you can use the Pitch module for pronounced, effect style pitch alteration and Melodyne 4 essential for surgical, transparent pitch correction.
I guess this is their way of compensating for the removal of the back end for fine detailed processing including a melodyne style pitch roll? I must not have noticed because I already had melodyne, but I never noticed the option
The problem with Melodyne Studio tuning is it does not have a way to "sculpt" a pitch. It is either flattened out into a lifeless straight line or balanced with pitch drift to some visual guesstimate. Hopefully future versions of Melodyne Studio will have the ability to draw pitches like Roland V-Vocal had many years ago. It is nice to have the Nectar plugin set at a moderate strength to detect and correct very subtle deviations from the pitch as a last resort to get the pitch even closer in various critical places (especially sustained notes).
I actually like you being hard on plugins and pointing out the cons. It let's me know you are not just trying to sell something. With me weighing the pros with constant and hearing some samples, I believe this plugin can be a Lamborghini in the garage next to the other cars.
Glad the vibe is generally positive, I love Izotope stuff. Just a couple things: Melodyne comes bundled with this, so the auto tune is used during production if needed, as a quick and dirty on the fly solution, then activate Melodyne when you're ready to go. Also, the harmony function can use MIDI to play your harmonies in as data. Seems you didn't work that part out. Next, hit the match button to match gain levels
Nectar Pitch Correction: I too prefer Melodyne but here, you did not alter the Strength of the correction. You have it set to 100% where it will never be smooth.
Scrolled for a bit and didn't see this said yet, but I would assume since you can use iZotope's Neutron and Ozone plugin's modules as standalone plugins, you can do the same with Nectar. This meaning that you could in fact take the reverb module and use it as a stand alone plugin on an aux. Usually like these reviews, but this review really doesn't have much actual knowledge about the plugin's features.
I was just thinking that, if it can replace SurferEQ that's one less plugin on my buylist. With Surfer it's very easy to select multiple frequency to automatically EQ, I'll have to try it with Nectar 3
For "unmasking" I use TrackSpacer from WavesFactory, one of my most essential plugs. 32 bands of dynamic EQ, only taking what is needed when it is needed and the effect can be low- and high-passed and otherwise adjusted across the frequency spectrum. Now I must go and see if you have reviewed it!
Thank you for the review. I wanted to add as far the Unmask feature goes, there's a plugin called TrackSpacer by Wavesfactory that does this but with way more controls, which I agree with you is missing in Nectar 3.
looks like reskinned and restructured Ozone but the Assistant feature seems amazing for a quick bounce. I also think the carve-feature could be used with the Dry/Wet knob of the Relay plugin (the one Reaper slapps on every plugin). And then it's very cool stuff but as you said, it would be good to have more controll or even see what changes it makes.
The dynamic eq following the pitch it incredible. What surprised me most honestly is how good that reverb sounded I dun think they sell an ala carte reverb maybe they should.
Also when you bypassed the nectar plugin to hear it in the mix the gain difference could be sorted with clicking match on the bottom right of the plugin as well, just letting you know mate
nectar used to have a melodyne style editor built in, seems they removed the back end from v3. now they just bundle it with melodyne, but that makes workflow clunkier. still pretty great plugin, I'll use the EQ on synth tracks and stuff because it follows harmonic peaks which is just really cool and useful for much more than vocals. in a bundle on sale it's kinda worth it just for the "smart" EQ. I'm a little miffed that izotope is spreading out small features across multiple plugins (there's no harmonic peak following in ozone or neutron for example, and a lot of the old nectar fx are either in melodyne, trash2 or vocalsynth now...). they do have sales like all the time though, and bundles, and various upgrade paths, so I guess that offsets it and you can get a lot of good stuff for like 90% off if you combine upgrade paths with bundles and a really big sale like black friday. but I digress.
I also don't like how melodyne "traps" audio, so if you want to move a treated segment you have to select the notes in melodyne and move them by hand rather than dragging an audio clip..at least it used to be. I just use variaudio in cubase now, and have like 3 melodyne licenses I have no more use for, lol.
@5:22 if only they'd kept the melodyne like back end then you could work back and forth with the harmony feature. I wonder if I can do that in cubase with VA... I should play with music today... I should everyday...
King Nothing You can technically compress your vocal with a de-easer the same way a multiband compressor does, but to me that sounds pointless when you can use a multiband compressor
I downloaded Nectar 3 to try it out. A lot of goodness, but the lack of controls while unmasking is a weird oversight making me not buy it and wait for an updated Nectar version with unmasking controls. I A/B tested it against a single plug in chain and sounded almost the same, so it does its job well.
Don't mean to hate, but I've used nectar while mixing an acoustic record and had to switch to Q3 because it sounds very "plasticky", specially the eq section. I have the impression this thing can do a lot, except sound natural and beautiful...
I have neither used nor own Fab Filter plugins, but from the videos I've seen, this looks a bit like those plugins. I do have Nectar and Nectar 2, neither of which look like this.

With the harmony module, if you had set the pitch correction module to the right scale, but don't have it correct the voice, and then load up harmony, it would harmonize within the scale.
I have never watched any of your videos but I did watch a Nectar 3 walk through from Izotope. You missed a lot. I would look over it again and check it out.. But cool presentation! Thanks..
I think you can further overdrive the distortion saturation with that eq knobby thing, I'm still exploring the plugin I don't work with vocals much but it has other uses too. nice to see there are more fx left over from previous versions than I thought, I must have been distracted when first exploring it. these reviews and comments keep making me want to try new things, keep it up :)

I hope they put the back end back in, from earlier versions. the new tech is great, like the harmony feature, but you used to be able to get in there and tweak various fx including the chain order, and a melodyne style pitch roll for solidifying pitch like mentioned in the video. I guess now they just bundle a melodyne essential license with it, but that just makes workflow clunkier. I guess the other fx migrated either to trash or vocalsynth. ah, well.
Hey! I love your videos and I'll be a patron soon for sure. Just wanted to point out that as you're saying "We can only do plus or minus - we can not do a real harmony", that there's a "set scale" button just a little up and to the right! Other than that, love what you do :) Peace!
Jonn Jonn - I’m running it on an old i7 3770K, and it works OK. But if you have a slower machine, I’m afraid you’re going to have to wait until Props release the free VST-performance update later this year (or early next).
I have been using this plugin for a long time and I love it. I don't really know why I am watching this again haha, but I noticed something. Since you didn't set the scale of the vocal in the pitch module the harmonizer will not work properly as there is no reference notes. Without the scale set in the pitch module the harmonizer will just have to use the same note interval constantly which will sound terrible in most cases.
@@Whiteseastudio Is the audio just going through the camera as well? A fantastic video. Izotope makes great products, but I always welcome your opinion. I agree with the "unmasking" feature. It left me feeling completely out of control. I do like the "Assistant" feature. I can this very useful for getting ideas. Thanks for your dedication.
These A.I driven products are helpful as long as the mixing sound engineer can still apply their artistic control as well. Can you finalize it sure but I'd be asking the studio what are the artistic attributes that were applied to create the sound pallet - I'd want to be sure this isn't a sterile mix. I'm doing a free trial from Splice and testing harmonies with a vocal in F# Major. Surprisingly, the harmonies sound great when I don't leave it on the C Chromatic scale. I really can't get over a producer who openly admits to mixing songs without knowing the key. I'd kick you right out of my studio.
Another fun Snake Oil. Did they get rid of the De-Breather? That was the only thing I ever really ended up using Nectar for, and it's the only De-Breather I found that I could trust with VO work. EVERY other De-Breather would cut out a lot of stuff it shouldn't, no matter how I tweaked them. Even the other iZotope stuff. If you don't want the FX on the track, just route it to an FX track in REAPER. It's super easy. And you can go in and control the unmasking. You just hit "Accept" and it takes you to the Nectar interface where you can tweak it to your heart's content. I like these videos, but there were at least 5 things in this one that were inaccurate. I'm not saying you're intentionally misleading people, but most of the stuff you complained about was off the mark. I have to agree with you 100% about the pitch correction and the harmonies, though! Bad. As an ex-vocalist from the days before DAWs and pitch correction, I have to say, I absolutely cringe when I hear how vocals are produced these days. They sound like garbage, and no one is developing their skills because software does everything for them. It used to piss me off that I had to double vocals the hard way, and get a chorus just right, then have to do it eight times, including all the REAL harmonies. I always thought there should have been a way to copy and paste them, even in the old days of tape. But this goes too far. I hardly ever hear a vocalist that belongs in front of a mic anymore. It's all about the producer now.
If you're using splice, they dont include melodyne for the full $250 that you'll end up paying.. Kinda sad. I think this plugin does encourage laziness. I like iZopope's vocal synth a lot.. This plugin isn't much of a game changer if you're taking production seriously. I just needed an alternative Vocal Transformer since mine doesn't really work for some reason on my Hackintosh.. Someone let me know if you got any other good alternatives. Thanks!
LOVE your videos: WARNING BELLOW IS CRITICAL "I'm not that musical and I don't know the scale" is like someone saying "I'm not good with math." in a business meeting. Your making your money with music you have to know what scale your working with for many reason.

@@DjScar No, you are hired in a job based on your skillset and knowledge. Figuring out the key of your songs is music theory 101. As a result, his end result sounds terrible, just like an accounting mistake can cost a company millions.
Nice package, but besides this following eq, there's nothing outstanding or better said exclusive feature. Nonetheless nice plugin. Thanks for the review.
Only criticism at first glance is the inability to decide the amount of unmasking, strange lack of that option from Izotope since they’ve been putting amazing detailed plugins as of late. Only reason I’m passing by on this plugin for now.
On the harmony module you can write in the exact notes you want when you enable the midi mode down the bottom right hand corner
Or at least set the right scale.

I was getting annoyed by all the corny jokes during the first 90 seconds. But then when he said “which is not Darude Sandstorm” he won me over.
The Workflow of the EQ is total crap...how can you change the Gain amd Freq values??????? did u review that part?? does not make sense we are in 2018
RTFM and watch a video from someone who actually knows what they're talking about.
Noooooooo.... We need the Sandstorm by Darude to be able to understand the plugin.
How to izotope nectar 3 FL studio add solutio
"Or this finger"... I didn't spectate to laugh so hard on a plugin review
It comes bundled with RX 7 Breath Control.
I wonder how handy parallel processing with the unmasking would end up being.
Thanks!
Dying for Neutron 3 review! Should be informative, fun, funny, useful, entertaining, sarcastic...you know a typical WSS review.
LOVE your videos:
WARNING BELLOW IS CRITICAL
"I'm not that musical and I don't know the scale" is like someone saying "I'm not good with math." in a business meeting.
Your making your money with music you have to know what scale your working with for many reason.
thats like saying someone in a business meeting isn't allowed to use a calculator or look up a formula to get a result.
use the tools at your disposal, the end result is all that matters, who cares if he can detect a scale by ear?
@@DjScar No, you are hired in a job based on your skillset and knowledge. Figuring out the key of your songs is music theory 101. As a result, his end result sounds terrible, just like an accounting mistake can cost a company millions.
Een Nederlander, wat leuk, ik moet je video na deze bekijken of te wel je channel...je lijkt een beetje op Slync...!
This, to me, is more a production tool then it is a mixing/mastering tool. So, treat it as such ;)
Nice package, but besides this following eq, there's nothing outstanding or better said exclusive feature. Nonetheless nice plugin. Thanks for the review.
Only criticism at first glance is the inability to decide the amount of unmasking, strange lack of that option from Izotope since they’ve been putting amazing detailed plugins as of late. Only reason I’m passing by on this plugin for now.
i love it
Great review. To the point. Btw if you got the right tune, I think the Harmonizer feature will self correct itself. Mad respect for you.
