Small point. The built in pitch correction is not Melodyne. It's a separate plug in bundled
Thanks David. I just went and purchased this plug in. I have to admit, it's extremely helpful, sounds great, and I hate to say it, does a better job at subtractive eq than I do.
David likes comments all the time.thx david 4 all tutorials.
Great video very informative! Thanks
Found that the ALM off sounds better on Hip-Hop - if you want a straight line looking compressed signal.
The ALM and the "AUTO LEVEL" on the compressors does not help, if your intention is to have a solid compressed Rap Vox.
nectar help much in quickly mixing vocals. The surgical EQ only useful when vocal is good enough
Found that for RAP it is better to add another compressor 100% and really compressed, then tune it like 30-40% (parallel compression)
AND very important: turn the "auto gain" off - it does not help the compression tame the peaks and the vocal will not look/sound smooth (like a straight haircut), as we want rap vocals to be. We do not want them to be dynamic and all over the place, like in other genres.
Solid State works best, for RAP - it really brings out some shiny stuff in the vocals.
Leave the ALM on and add some 3-4 Db in Output gain.
ALL I NEED to do to my vocals, from now on. I am pretty dynamic in rapping, so the 2nd compressor is a must.
On the Vox Bus, you could still add a Klanghelm leveler or another Nectar with some subtle compression (lower the threshold and ratio),
to add more control, in case your vocalist is all over the place.
I tested it a lot, for one week and exported everything, so I can hear and see it in Cool Edit Pro 2 (Adobe Audition).
Sweet! I've missed these videos! :D

Awesome! review your video was very helpful thank you for sharing your awesome video
Can the nectar modules be used seperately? Imagine I want to use my Hyperion instead of the Nectar eq and my 3A instead of the compressor, does that make sense? Or should I then just remove the nectar modules from the nectar chain and use my own stuff before or after the entire plugin? As a learning tool it looks great though. Do you think the suggested settings are in general translatable to hardware? I’d like to use my gear (for example Hyperion is sooo beautiful) but using the other nectar modules might work very well in a vocal chain
Yes
So the modules can be used separately? Wow that’s great!

COOL! Thanks David. As usual a very clear and informative review. As you said, Izotope's static eq and dynamic eq are very helpful learning tools as well as great modules. However, I always find that their 'assistant's' compression choices in Ozone and Neutron are always over compressed and it would appear to be the same in Nectar 3 but it's easy to just back them off to taste. I am surprised the there is no sync mode on the delay. The harmoniser sounds great. Much easier to use than Waves doubler! Just a couple of questions. (1) Was the vocal compressed on the way in? And (2) Reverb before delay or reverb after delay? I guess the answer is whatever sounds best but which do you prefer and why? Thanks again.
I always turn off compression in neutron and just use eq and possibly exciter and use other compressors
I love it for using it as a learning tool - but i still prefer to mix the vocal myself. searching the problem areas with an eq, and adjusting the comp etc. just has something that makes more fun than just put an AI on the track ^^
Doing the job yourself may be good but if this IA actually does the job, who cares? I mean, all I'm after is good music. Nobody cares about the process, it's just the results that matter!
I don’t think you’re supposed to let the AI do it all for you. It just applies a basic suggestion that you should then go in and modify to taste.
Okay but what about female vocal with izotope?
I bought Nectar 3 (with Tonal Balance Control bundle), and on the vocal track, I first put Ableton 8 band (low block), and a gentle squeeze compressor set 50% wet setting, then installed Nectar 3 only, on my most recent project, I did the vocal assistant, but didn't like the suggested sound adjustments..yikes. I did try the dynamic setting on a low end peak too...and like how that looked..but overall results it seemed to be too pushy at times (like it needed a better limiting method), sound altered, uneven loudness and more brittle. I never seem to find the cause for the sound/tone altering (shutting off modules one at a time) and just went back to what I was more familiar with, Ableton Live9 effects.. So I didnt find it easy to produce exceptable results with at least, that project..I'm kinda hesitant to waste my time with it on the next project, though I didnt get around to the Ozone 9 Advance, Neutron 3 Advance or Tonal Balance Control.. I figured I altering and was starting out on my first attempt with trash using my Nectar 3 plug-in, so it was heading in the wrong direction(?)
What about using Nectar 3 for all the tracks, not just vocals? I'd like to see you make a video where you do a whole song (preferably metal) using only Nectar 3 on the tracks.
That‘s Neutron, not Nectar.
