My in laws used to own a motorcycle shop in the 80s and 90s. One service they provided was custom built bikes. Mostly Harley’s. They had an employee who was singling out customers who looked poor. So they set a trap for the employee. They had a customer whose third custom built bike had just come in. They asked if he could please come in looking poor. The guy came in wearing dirty t shirt and jeans. He had been gardening and working on a truck. The employee went off on the guy saying he didn’t think the guy could afford blah blah blah. My MIL comes out and tells the customer his bike is here and he still owes $25k on the bike. The customer pays it all in cash. This was the 80s. The customer was a millionaire. The employee lost 2 things that day: his commission and his job.

Last story reminds me of one my dad told me about a bully when he was a kid. Dad was walking down a sidewalk with an ice cream cone, and met a well known bully. The kid demanded dad give him the ice cream cone, and since the kid was bigger than dad, he was likely gonna get it. So dad held it out to him, dropped it, and stepped on it. Turned around and ran before the shock wore off the kid. Keep in mind this was when something like an ice cream was a real treat and money was tight. But it was worth it to my old man to not let this kid take it, at all costs.

That reminds me of when I shared an apartment with a male friend. We were strictly platonic and nothing ever happened between us. We were family friends and sex with him would be like sex with my brother (eww). So his ex wife decides she wants to get back together with him and he moved her in without even consulting me. From then on my life there was hell. Eventually it ended up with me being the only one working, buying food or paying bills, while my friend and his wife started trying to force me to stay in my room while they watched MY tv on MY sofa. Rent came due the next month and I moved out on the last day and left their little love nest to them, albeit somewhat less furnished. They ended up not getting back together and we eventually reconciled but never as close friends. It's been over 30 years since I saw either of them.

STORY 4: I live in a farming community. Mostly fruit orchards and vineyards. There are a great many wealthy farmers and land owners but unless they are attending a special occasion they dress just like anyone else. Most of them also have regular vehicles that aren't going to turn any heads that they use on the daily but do have some nicer vehicles to use when the occasion calls for it. This is more common then you might think, people who come in the a designer clothing store, car dealership, or jewelry store, looking like a bum, peasant, or commoner, because "they look poor" a person who's livelihood is to grew crops and live stock for the population is most definitely not poor.

Also, having wealth doesn't mean you automatically have to have the highest end stuff and showing off. For me, wealth is a matter of simply being comfortable until you die, even if your comfort comes cheap like jeans and a t-shirt as your main wardrobe, eating fast food, reading library books, and spending the majority of your entertainment budget on dvd boxsets.

Know of one who drives around in a car he found in a barn on the farm, wrecked out, clapped out Land Cruiser, with no doors, no hood, and tattered and torn interior, and major body rust. But it runs well, and the farm roads are such that the only vehicles that will go on them are that one, or Massey Ferguson, or a trail bike. Yes he does grade them, but the rains tend to turn them immediately into mud and potholes, and putting gravel is not worth it. Does keep visitors like the JW and such away, having to walk the 20km to the front door to ring the bell.

Years ago, in the late 90's, I went to a small toy store downtown to shop for my nephew. I was the indulgent aunt. There were two clerks and neither offered to help me, as I was dressed in work clothes after work. So I left and wrote a letter to the store. The owner called and apologized and asked for another chance, So I dressed the same way, went in on the same day of the week at the same time, and the same thing happened. So I called and talked again to the owner and she was apologetic again. I told her I wasn't going to get humiliated again and never went back. Sadly, the store did well and moved to big quarters and is still a business in town. But I never went back.

RE: the backpack story: Late 1980s, my (future) Lady Wife was working in a print shop. Besides other duties, she was running a printing press. This involves (shocker) printer's ink. My wife's (female) gynecologist at the time was a smartly dressed nose-in-the-air type. My wife, to avoid taking more time off work than absolutely necessary, went straight from work to her doctor's appointments. The doctor seemed offended that my wife wore clothes appropriate to working in a print shop. And the printer's ink under her fingernails- that did not go over well. Plus, not being in an intimate relationship at the time and never wearing skirts, shaving her legs was not on my wife's radar.
My wife decided to find another doctor. When she picked up her records to take to the new doctor, the envelope wasn't sealed. So she took a peek. She wished she hadn't. Among the old doctor's disparaging comments was "Hirsuite {hairy} and unkempt." Woah!
So, first appointment with the new doctor, my wife took the whole afternoon off work. She had used solvent to get the ink out from under her fingernails, and wore rubber gloves at work that day. She went home, showered, shaved her legs (which she hates) and dressed up in her "interview outfit." I wonder what the new doctor thought when they read her records.

Why is it even an unofficial “requirement” that women shave their legs anyway? It’s just a waste of shower water, soap or shaving cream, shaver, and time that could be better spent doing more productive things because leg hair gets stubbly 12 hours later anyway. And it’s gotta be done every day or you end up with a gazillion razor nicks from ingrown hairs poking the skin up-OUCH! Don’t even get me started on trying to do that flamingo shaving pose in a cramped shower stall with your glasses off and not cutting the hell out of your legs!
I haven’t bothered with it in years, even though I’m married. I’m of the firm opinion that if Mother Nature wanted us to be bald from the thighs down, She’d have kept our legs that way past puberty! And any guy who says we should have shaved legs should do like Mel Gibson’s character did in _What Women Want_ and actually TRY shaving their own legs just so they know what we have to put up with! For even more fun, guys should try _waxing!_ 😈

In fact (on the rare occasions I look at pictures of naked women) hairlessness is a major turn-off. Brain says "TOO YOUNG!".
I'm guessing that's why some models who do nudes maintain the "landing strip"- a short strip of closely cropped pubic hair just above the V. It says "I'm an adult, just very well groomed."

Entitled clerk story. This was in 1974. I was making a lot of money working construction. I decided to purchase my own new car rather than one of my parents cars. I did research, did test drives until I was ready to make my purchase. One day the job site shut down early. I decided to go car shopping. After a long day of work I freely admit I looked scruffy. I had decided to buy a red Mustang 2. When I walked in the older salesmen appraised & clearly decided I was a kid they could ignore. A younger salesman walked over. Our conversation lasted about 10 minutes. I made an offer less than asking price he countered & I still was pleased with the deal. I made a down payment & agreed to pick it up in a few days as I needed my Dad to drive me to the dealership.
Point being any salesman could of gotten the sales commission but they lost out because I did not got their idea of a proper customer. I had that car for many years…. underpowered & prone to rusting…but it looked good.

The story about the sales rep and the handbag: Reminds me of a story I heard years ago about a man walking into a Cadillac dealership in Austin, TX with cutoffs and a Tshirt and was given the cold shoulder by the sales rep. He went back to his office, called the dealership and told him how he had been treated and who he was. He was Michael Dell, the founder and CEO of Dell Computers which were headquartered in the outskirts of Austin. I think, if I remember correctly, the salesman was fired, and Mr. Dell actually got a fleet program with the dealership. Don't know, but Michael have have known exactly what he was doing to get a better price, but the lesson is, treat everyone like they are Michael Dell.

Story #4: I would say this is quite universal.
While the peacocks (People that does anything too look rich) are most noticable, most people prefer to not stand out. This is regardless of your personal wealth/income.
And it makes sense. If you want privacy or get friends/partner that aren't only after money you focus on looking plain.
Plus it's always fun to go to somewhere fancy or expensive while looking just slightly over full hobo. You get a much better impression of how their service really is.

Story 1 reminds me of a family friend, she was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer and was able to beat it, but the chemo left her severely weakened resulting in her not being able to walk for very long and having to rest frequently in between. She's had to resort to using a wheelchair in places like airports. In the country where we live there are often special lines/queues for persons with disabilities (and she was issued a PWD placard + card when she started treatment).
There was a really long line for the standard/regular queue (I don't remember where or what for) and there was no one in the special queue, so she was able to go straight up to the counter using said special queue. She overheard a family complaining from the regular line, how she "didn't look disabled enough" to be allowed to use the special queue and one of them snarkily remarked that her disability was "in her brain". Sadly, she did not (and so did no one else for that matter) say anything.

I’m a veteran, I refuse to accept a 10% veterans discount whenever I buy anything. It’s not something to be used for monetary gain. I seriously doubt that a real honest veteran would throw that around as a guilt trip. So in real life, he’s either faking, which is stolen valor, which is pathetic! Or he did serve, and he’s lying about the purple heart, which is also stolen valor. You can serve, but if you lie about your rank or the metals that you claim with one that is still stolen valor. I was in the Air Force, and I was an airman first class, and I’m proud of that. But I did not serve my country for the perks and benefits in civilian life. Unfortunately, veterans can be scumbags too.

Story 4 reminded me of a guy I met in a pub, years ago in the 1990’s. He was dressed from head to toe in Calvin Klein - shoes, socks, jeans, shirt, denim jacket, fragrance, underwear (he told me) and a leather bag which he kept mentioning cost a lot of money and that he didn’t want to lose it. He’d put the bag on the floor under the table but it was visible to all that walked past us. Later on after a few pints, we decided to go elsewhere and the bag came with us. By the end of the night, we’d exchanged numbers and he’d gone back to the first bar.
The next day he phones me telling me that he had his bag stolen from the pub - he’d left it under the table and gone to the bar - when he came back, it was gone ! He’d left his keys, personal papers, money etc in there and I told him, that given that it had so much stuff in it that he didn’t want to lose, he should have taken it to the bar with him - better to keep your belongings and lose the table than the other way round !
I also found out that he spent about £2000 a month on designer gear on a credit card, but that he wasn’t working and living on unemployment benefit (U.K.) - and that he wasn’t even LOOKING for work ! He was about 22 with £30,000 debt !
I lost contact with him over the years, but I daresay he hasn’t changed ! He might be homeless, or sofa surfing but he definitely won’t be in the Black at the bank !

He owns 3 casino's, a charter bus company, and every restaurant from a common fast food franchise on the eastern half of our state. His companies easily earn over 10 million a year but he's the sort of guy that will wander into a store he owns and start chatting with the staff that have no clue who he is before going "you know, I was looking over my records and you've worked for me a few years. My working assumption was that every person that walked in could afford any item we had on offer, regardless of their attire or appearance (whether they could justify such a purchase to themselves is a separate issue), so I treated the guy who came in on his lunch break from a tank welding job just as well as, if not better than, the guy who walked in wearing a suit that would cost me two months' pay.
