He earned the PhD, and later, wrote five novels which reflected his upbringing in and around St. Louis, MO, and his mother's hometown of Perryville, MO. Perry county in Missouri is the site of the first settlement of the German Lutheran immigrants who established the future church body now called The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod.
