We've all heard the tales of the edgelord, but here's one who took his terrible etiquette past just being a dark loner. In fact, he was so bad that no one could even take him seriously.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I (Crispy) read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

I have a bit of a mantra: people can't fix problems they don't know exist. As such, you always ALWAYS confront them first and see if that fixes a problem. If it doesn't, then go above their heads

Should totally have given the edgelord a chance to take a contract to kill someone, only for his target to be himself through time shenanigans.

OP probably let him go for all humanoids, just because he knew that was probably what he'd do and... well the rest of the part was probably all humanoids too. So yeah he'd always sense humanoids since he's with humanoids.

This reminds me of me saying "I use detect magic." and the DM going: "OK. You use dectect magic, and are overwhelmed. You, as you know, are in a wizard's tower. A place where most things are magic." me: "Yes. I thought so. Yes, the magic here is magic. Right."

Playing an edgy, gritty character is fine so long as you keep in mind that random, wanton murder is unacceptable anywhere and that you must be capable of operating in a group dynamic.
If you join a group and design a "lone wolf who doesn't trust anyone," you need to go back to the drawing board.

I agree, I am currently playing an inquisitor/alchemist/swordsmen who is goin to prestige into assassin, Ln, and she is very party coherent even though she is a spy/bounty hunter by profession. The trick is to not be a dick haha

    • @Estarile

I mean a "lone wolf who doesn't trust anyone" very well might be forced to work with a group by circumstance. But you should run the character type by your future traveling companions. It could be a fun character building of them learning to trust, but that's something people need to agree to. Its not fun when it shows up unexpectedly.

I played an edgy character once. I defined his general lack of talking and sticking to the shadows in cities and towns as social anxiety. When with just the party on the road he was an open book, joking and having fun with the rest of the group. Started out as your typical assassin rogue who was an urchin yada yada yada.

The 'arrow of fireball' answer, for what it's worth, was 100% correct. Edgy probably wanted to be able to detonate it mid-air, but the beads from a necklace of fireballs are activated specifically by a strong impact, meaning if the arrow doesn't hit something, the bead doesn't go boom.

These edge lords watch to many isekei. In those, the protagonist always gets his way and all the characters agree with him or think he’s the best despite how shitty he is being. So some people think they can act that way forgetting they are dealing with actual humans not wish fulfillment characters.

@@lulospawn can't you just overcast the spell at max potency or limit the amount of targets you want to put into sleep?

    • @lulospawn
      @lulospawn 3 года назад +1

@@letsplaysvonaja1714 I think in 5e you don't get to choose the amount of targets with sleep. You could cast it at a higher level, sure, but let's say you're level one and you cast it on a group of squishy bandits. Bandits have 11hp but with max hp they have 18. Let's say that you roll the 5d8 of a sleep spell and average 23-26. With such average roll you can hope to put 2 bandits to sleep. 3 at best with a high end roll. With max hp you have to roll very damn high to put two bandits to sleep.
Also, you have to roll real crap not to put al least 1 bandit to sleep. 18 (max hp) is way closer to the average, so mild bad luck will screw you out of a spell slot.
And don't get me started with magic missile. 3d4 +3 (max dmg output) can't one shot a bandit. With avg hp you can get it done with decent luck.
And this is important bc a lvl one caster should be able to put down a .125 threat before it gets close.

Having tried it after running my own campaigns and sandboxes, it's oddly freeing! You still have to do a lot of work to adapt it to you and your party, but it runs a lot smoother. It's also a neat shared story experience with other groups and DMs, because each DM and party goes through the module differently and tells a slightly different and engaging story. I'd say give one of the official modules a try at least once in your life, just to see what it's like!

I just found your channel, and hope you've gotten a bit more critical of an OP in your stories, but with this one I really disagree with your closing advice that there's "nothing else he could've done"
OP explicitly leaves out context several times by saying it's either "not relevant" or "another story". He leaves out so much context that I missed the part where OP sat down and had a chat with the player. Instead they gave the player a babysitter and deliberately didn't play along with any of the players roleplay. The DM used the DM position to target the player for being an edgelord and then got their desired outburst.
I'd say there's tons of things they could've done differently. Even with this much curation of the narrative OP comes across as immature to me.
Edit: sorry, didn't mean to just dump criticism on you. I think your delivery and pacing are excellent, but I focused on the negative only
