After reading all of Agatha Christie and watching the movies and episodes, David Suchets interpretation of Poirot was without doubt the masterpiece that Agatha Christie would have wanted portrayed by an actor. Lovely to have watched. Thank you for the interview.
That's funny you say that, because when she saw Albert Finney's portrayal, she declared him perfect in every way except for the moustache. Let's think about that for a minute or two. Finney was EXACTLY how she wrote the character except for the moustaches. Suchet's portrayal is NOTHING like Finney's...AT ALL! Suchet made the character accessible and likeable...all the things Finney's character was NOT! Now, really...if Christie LOVED Finney's portrayal because he was EXACTLY HOW SHE WROTE HER UNLIKEABLE CHARACTER (let's face it, Poirot was NOT written as a likeable character), then she probably would NOT have enjoyed Suchet's interpretation. Just because you like him, and I like Suchet, doesn't mean Christie would like him best. That's like assuming your best friend will like chocolate cake the best simply because YOU like chocolate cake. You are forgetting to allow your friend's opinions into the mix. Christie liked Finney because he portrayed her character as written. So she probably would NOT have thought Suchet the best, and with good reason. He really ISN'T like the character she wrote. Balding, tiny moustaches, behaviors uncharacteristic of the character, etc....anybody who has read the books knows Suchet does NOT portray the character as written--even SUCHET has said so. He adapted his performance for what would work well for a modern audience.
For me there is no one better to play Poirot than Mr Suchet. He has done so much throughout his career, but his legacy will always be known for playing Poirot.
I'm sooooo excited to see this. I haven't even watched the interview yet - I'm just the biggest fan of Christie's Poirot series and I ADORE Suchet! I have all the episodes/films and re watch them all the time. Thank you sooo much Goldderby for this interview!

David Suchet's Poirot IS egotistic, but he was also passionate about Justice, and he did have compassion . Like when he tells one woman in an episode, something to the effect of "There is no sin so black that cannot be forgiven by God Almighty." Scenes like that give Poirot more depth than fans saw in the character in past movies where he would be the little man with the solutions to all the crimes. POIROT was HUMAN and David shared that humanity with fans.
Was "The Mysterious Affair At Styles" filmed before "Peril At End House"? Because Peril was shown first on TV here in the UK in January 1990, whereas Styles was first shown in September 1990.
I have watched almost all of his episodes and I've been binging on his interviews. His dedication to the books and the character is amazing and that his dedication to Agatha Christine's book, I believe, is what made him so successful in the series. To me, no one else can portray this character as well. I was extremely disappointed in the recent remake of Murder on the Orient Express. There were so many mistakes in the character that all my husband and I did was point them out to each other. Sadly Kenneth is going to remake Murder on the Nile. Won't watch.
I like Marple, but casting an older actress was not a great idea because, both for the actress and the character it's difficult. The older an actor is, the harder a working day becomes. AND we didn't get to see her gradually age. Poirot, on the other hand, had a younger life. We got to see him ride a bike and even wear, what Poirot might call 'grubbies' . He had light moments, be we also get to see more depth as the character gets older. If you have watched the entire Poirot canon, Curtain is just about impossible to watch because, within the first two minutes, with nothing said, as soon as you see the back of that iconic head, the shoes, the now-arthritic hand and the sight of the wheel chair, you have just soaked a pillow or worked through half a box of kleenex in the space of two minutes! 2013 was a good time to have stock in Kleenex. 😭

Amazing actor, David Suchet, gave us Hercule Poirot. Agatha Christie wrote about him, David Suchet brought him to life and he became real. 💘❤️🩹💝

I love him!! My sweet Poirot!! He seems a very good man!
What pleases him most is perhaps his style of performance which is not an "advertisement" but sees a skilled man dedicated to his work.

YES! Suchet also made Poirot LIKEABLE, which he was not written to be. Suchet made him more human than Christie did.

David Suchet is as much Hercule Poirot as Patrick Stewart is Jean Luc Picard, my 2 favourite actors!

i know what you mean...to this day it still brings me up short and i just sob my little heart out...it felt so real...
Thankfully, I had some good Belgian chocolate (as Poirot had when he went to the theatre) to pay homage as I watched it...
