I'm not sure when this was recorded, but i think the controversy regarding Emilia Perez has moved beyond Twitter / Letterboxd at this stage. Especially with everything going on with Karla right now. Mainstream media outlets are reporting on the film regularly
Agree, even people who only go sporadically to the movies, have told me they have heard the controversy on Emilia Perez and that people hate that movie but has tons of Oscar nominations
@shoopsho I like that. On top of that, they might actually do it anyway since more information about the cast of this film and it's director and just how extremely toxic they are and how much they disobeyed the rules in the academy is coming out. They're going to get exposed for the two-bit hacks and criminals that they are. Saldana is finished too, she's a Zionist and the world knows it.
variety, the hollywood reporter, indie wire, nbc, people, deadline, etc have reported on KSG tweets, not to mention the fact that KSG also insulted the Academy itself, not 20 years ago, just 4 years ago, she called it an "afro-korean festival"
It seems Chris and Joyce have heard the audience! The log pillow and Zebra wall print seemingly are back!! We have vibrant backgrounds to match the vibrant conversations!!!
I guess they recorded this before the Karla Sofia Gascon horrible tweets came out, I would like to hear their thoughts on how this could affect Emilia Perez chances overall.
It could seriously impact the race. But I also don't know how things will change again between now and Feb. 11, when voting starts. Will the anger about Karla's posts die down? Will people accept her apology?
@@chrisjrosen Well I don't think anyone will accept her apologies, now a post defending Hitler has resurfaced. At this point The academy should just rescind her nomination and either have 4 nominees or just have the 6th be the new nominee. Anyways, thank you Chris for always reading our comments, let's hope The academy does the right thing, we can't allow this kind of comments to have a space in our society.
Screen time is a big deal! So what if the movie isn't told through Benji's eyes, it's still his movie just as much as David's. Benji starts and ends the movie. They are in basically every scene, but they also have scenes without the other. So they are both lead Category fraud is always a problem. Remember when McAvoy was nominated Supporting for The Last King of Scotland at BAFTA? Or Chris O'Donnell nominated supporting at the Globes for Scent of a Woman? Or Foxx supporting at the Oscars for Collateral? The undisputed main characters, leads, it's their story, the movie is told through their eyes, they never leave the screen, etc. It's annoying and needs to stop. If we have committees deeming scores eligible and ineligible, then why mot have a committee that decides category placement? Shouldn't be that hard. And it's important. If Lakeith Stanfield can be put in supporting, then anyone can. Screw genderless categories, we might as well go the SAG TV route and get rid of lead and supporting and add in comedy. At least that's a little more objective
Just came back from the movie theater to see The Brutalist. That is so easily steamrolling Best Picture & Best Director at the very least. A Complete Unknown, Conclave, or Anora are going to need tons of votes on the preferential ballot to overcome the sheer magnitude of The Brutalist
Always cool to hear a review from Joyce's friend's dad. I disgree with his take that A Complete Unknown won't open up Bob Dylan to younger people. I've already seen so many teens listening to his songs after seeing the film.
@@chrisjrosen Chris, I agree with your take about Timothée Chalamet as an actor. I think what makes him stand out is that unlike Leo who is an introvert, Timothée is never afraid to make fun of himself while being down to earth kinda like Tom Holland.
What arc and journey does Rita have in Emilia Perez? She has barely any motivation, no development, and absolutely doesn't make any decisions to propel the story forward. She just serves as an introduction to Emilia, then serves as her yes woman and only ever does what Emilia tells her to do. She is 100% a supporting character and Emilia is the lead, regardless of the screen time. My problem with her winning is not about category, it's about how unimpressed I am by her character - maybe not her fault, but her character is incredibly underwritten and I don't think she has much to do.
It can. There’s definitely a world that it can diminish Zoe’s chances in winning. Say what you will, but Ariana Grande and Wicked deserve the win. Why are people underestimating her so much?
Interesting to listen all the Emilia Perez thoughts after everything that has come about Karla Sofia Gascon. I think that's substantial enough that it *will* go beyond Film Twitter. Major trades have already been reporting it. And even if the industry doesn't feel the same way, I don't like how everyone brushes the backlash off as just a terminally online thing. I have followed the Oscars for about 10 years and I have never seen the amount of dislike for any other Oscar contender. This is not Green Book, it's something entirely else.
I know, it won't mean anything because KSG consistently and constantly violated the academy's rules and named opposing members of the actress race and is threatening to smear their campaigns. Only a mean girls character would do that, this is so immature it's not even funny. She's definitely not keeping that nomination.
Was this recorded before the latest controversy concerning Emilia Perez's lead actress? For those not aware, a lot of racist and Islamophobic comments she made in the past have resurfaced, and even racist slander against the 2021 edition of the Academy Awards. Variety and other big outlets have covered it. I think that's on a more serious level than the previous online backlash against the movie, which in the end was mainly just about the movie. I wonder what the impact of this will be.
They're going to get their nominations revoked and the director is going to be kicked out of the Academy for good. That whole entire cast and campaign is insufferable and the most radical left that I have ever seen from an awards campaign. On top of that, the film is an absolutely train wreck. To make things worse though, they used Ai and now they're smearing people's campaigns and trying to make it personal. This is officially going too far and they're going to get all 13 nominations revoked. This is unacceptable and extremely immature behavior on gascon's part. I hope they all get fired. In the following weeks, we won't see any more of Emilia Perez in the nominations. It's over for them. They can't hide from it anymore. They're getting exposed.
@carmengonzalezgay249 I'm very much awake. You should read what's going on currently. EP will be eliminated from the Oscars soon. None for them. Bye bye to them. More tweets and dirt is being dug up on Gascon and she can't handle it. It's over for them.
Emilia Pérez would be the worst Best Picture winner of this century since Crash, Green Book and CODA. All films that portray minorities in the most paper thin and offensive way imaginable.
There are plenty of Best Picture winners that nobody remembers now. But everyone is always bringing back Crash, Shakespeare in Love, Green Book, Coda. If EP wins, it wil always be remembered. 😂
I just find it dumbfounding how industry insiders still hold Emilia Perez with such regard despite all the repeated criticisms levelled at it, the director and the lead actress. For the last 10 years I’ve made it a yearly past time to watch the awards season play out but I’ve never seen any Oscar nominee as reviled as Emilia Perez. The commotion has already moved to mainstream content sites and has left Twitter/X. Please wake up and take a hint before any more credibility is lost.
They actually don't. They hate it so much, but the pr campaign from the film and Netflix is getting paid off for it. There's a secret insider trading that's going on and how this film even got the amount of nominations that it did, there's a scam campaign going on and it's going to get exposed before the Oscars. On top of that, we won't see any more of this film as all 13 of its nominations will be revoked in the following weeks or month. Shady stunts like this won't be tong rated again and this film will be banned from the world, no one will ever see it again.
@@myytchanneldinakoha8498 They could win a bunch of tech categories, what if they win the top one though? This will possibly change the way that the academy is seen and how they're adapting their taste to films that the public enjoys more.
EP was pretty successfully received and well liked during its festival run. Normal people watched that movie at that time too, not just "industry people". There has been a very concerted hate campaign against the film, which is fair enough, but - when the film was being treated as just a film, and not "everything that is wrong about the world in 130 minutes", most of the people who watched it liked it and some even loved it. Critics gave the film positive but not super glowing reviews. Spanish speakers were on the panels that awarded the film (Juan Antonio Bayona announced the film's award at Cannes extremely enthusiatically). Guillermo del Toro obviously enjoyed the film. Then the backlash started. The point is, before the film was politicized, it got a pretty positive reception. Joyce and Chris's comments are still very valid. I don't think normal people would even watch the film because of its narrative weirdness, but they certainly won't think of it as the second Birth of a Nation, as twitter world want everyone to take it. And the drunk ramblings/texts of one of the stars has nothing to do with how it should be judged, ffs.

There's no way her Tweets won't resonate until the Oscars, a actress who claims to be a defender of minorities writes such absurd things (tweets from 3-4 years ago) It will probably sully the film's campaign,Netflix will definitely take her out of the front line
Saying that 'Normie doesn't know or care about Emilia Pérez' while literally everyone knows about Crash and how bad of a winner it is. People DO think deeply, and the backlash will be immense. 'The industry wont think too much about it' literally 8 years ago, there was backlash against Lalaland, despite it getting 14 nods. And 7 years ago, there was backlash against 3 Billboards... Like, Green Book at least had good audience scores... Emilia Pérez is on whole different level

@@purekinema Maybe so, but i think some voters who had it first due to subversion and inclusivity might look at the film askance now, and it definitely took a nosedive with the preferential method for best picture.
@@thomazcarvalho1187 "Nosedive" is a hyperbolic word in my opinion to describe any possible reaction to past tweets from the actress in the film. It could be voters might reevaluate the message based on some of the discourse (I personally reevaluated what I thought about the message about drug cartels, which seemed uncontroversial on first watch, based on the response from Mexico). But it's hard to imagine they would significantly change their thoughts on the film based on unrelated tweets from the actress.
Although it's quite common to say "you don't get it" or someone, most fans are really unable to articulate good reasons for their views. It's just a gut thing for them. That movie was boring, I don't see why anyone liked that movie. If you pressed them for details, they can't really provide it. Sure, it's an opinion, but you can't back it with anything that would convince others. This is in response to the person who didn't get "Timmy Chalamet". Who do they like better? Why do they like them better? Do they think he's awful? Not getting someone is such a low effort comment like "I didn't get that movie". What parts did you get, if any? What movies do you like? For example, the review that Joyce gave from someone she knows about A Complete Unknown assumed the movie's purpose was to create more Dylan fans. Maybe that's not its purpose. It makes people aware of Dylan, but Dylan is seen as a kind of Mozart, genius, but not so likable. And it's folk music, so even if the portrayal were much more friendly, are people ready to embrace folk music? It's quite niche these days.
Agreed. It should have been that from the start. Wicked is already better reviewed than Amelia Perez and is regarded as a better film in every aspect. On top of that, the performances are actually much better and the filmmaking is surprisingly better. I'm just going to be real here when I say this, Wicked is experiencing an incredible resurgence right now and is going to rise to the top as we get closer to the Oscars because these other films are using AI while this one isn't. That film is unlimited after all. 😂. It's potential is unlimited. Cynthia could be the new favorite for best actress after what happened with Demi Moore at Fernanda Torres. They're all connected to the Emilio Perez campaign and they're all getting smeared on. Cynthia arrivo is supposedly getting an attempt on her campaign to get smeared on but it's not working. Both her and Grande are so upstanding and more sophisticated in that they are more mature and better actresses than the Emilia Perez team ever will be. Erivo is campaigning in La in a benefit concert? That will help to raise awareness and money for the families affected by the wildfires. Grande is secretly helping her and supporting her in that as well. They do so much more for their community and now that the kind of immature behavior from the Spanish language musical and its controversial campaign is going to come to an end. We could actually see this film banned potentially from the US and other countries. The whole world may never see this film again, that's how bad this has gotten. What you said before, it is Wicked and it always has been Wicked. It's already going to win the Screen Actors Guild Award for Ensemble, and it's not even close. We could see this film rise all the way to the top because of all the controversial nominees. Wicked is the one with the least to no controversy and no one is going to see it coming. You watch.
If Oscar’s were tomorrow, They would win all because voting had already occurred. Voting hasn’t even started. This drama has been catastrophic for the movie.
A VERY SMALL PERCENTAGE of the World care for this stuff, Hence, Normies Nobody cares, just people like us who come here. People, Twitter, Letterbox, need to take a step back. Industry people dont have a problem with EP and aren't loud about this like Twitter because they have a life. No Offense 😮😅😮
I don't think the blowback on Emilia Perez comes from thematic hangups. It seems to me mostly it comes from RUclips cinephiles who can't stand the music and the basic narrative logic of the film.
I'm very disappointed in chris and joyce as a long-term listener. Emilia perez's director said spanish is the language for the poor and immigrants. The lead actress is found to hold extremely racist views of latinos, black people, arabs and asians for years. And you two just gaslight everyone and laugh at people who feel offended by these? Minimizing the racist's behaviour is also racist.
I wouldn't gaslight anyone offended by those comments. We recorded this before the Karla tweets surfaced, so we're not minimizing those comments in this video. And those comments are much more significant than her talking about Fernanda Torres or the general online hate directed toward Emilia Perez. We've seen that the Academy doesn't pay attention to online noise -- see various Oscar wins for Green Book, CODA, Three Billboards -- but the tweets are a major news story, probably more significant than even the Green Book controversies.
In regards to EP, they are here to discuss the facts, and analyze how the industry and the general public reacts to backlash. They’re not really here to share their personal opinions on the backlash, scandal. They’re being professional!
All the fuse of haters of this movie is because these SG haters always make it so big to hate anything SG is involved in that's all it is. I LOVED THIS MOVIE , something I have never seen before.
More like 10. She's not anywhere in the conversation and now she will lose her nomination for the first time in a very long time in the Oscars. She's going to lose that nomination and the film will lose all 13 of its nominations, even Zoe Saldana has openly admitted that she is a Zionist and extremist. She even goes as far as to call people. Nazis and criminals for disliking her film. She even supports Selena Gomez in crying about the illegals leaving the country. Apparently Saldana wants them to stay but they can't deal with the fact that peace and prosperity are coming and they can't take it. They know that these illegals are going back, there's nothing they can do and they're just hurting their own campaign.
@shoopsho Yes. Even Cynthia was above her. On top of that, there's a new scandal with Demi Moore involving The intimate relationships that she engaged in with children. More info about that is coming out and she will no longer be on top for best actress. I can see everyone's campaigns being smeared and wicked will come out on top. At least it has the least amount of controversy surrounding it, anything. It had completely subsided and will be looking like a resurgence contender now. After this intense PR campaign for EP, we'll be happy to see Wicked win.
@mascotbear463 Cynthia was always the better actress and she always had more of the chance. On top of that, she might actually win now considering what has happened with Fernanda Torres, Demi Moore, Gascon and Mikey Madison's controversy with an intimacy coordinator that is still giving the Anora team trouble.

But it's hard to imagine they would significantly change their thoughts on the film based on unrelated tweets from the actress.
yes she is
The way they talk about EP and not
Talk about Karla's tweets I think this was recorded before.
It was.
25:25 Chris hates the Substance 🙂 I had to say this. ok this time I am only joking. You made me laugh Chris 😀
Thank you for the laugh!
EP is so done and deservedly so. The only question is whether Zoe will be collateral damage.
Kieran is playing a Zack Galifinakis character. Lazy acting!
Love judgmental movie fan's letter.
Tempest in a teacup of the year - the hate for Emilia Perez.
- poorly aged comment of the year
There is no way this movie is winning anymore. It's gonna be Wicked now.
You watch.
if oscars were tomorrow her chances would be zero. but in 1 month time, her team has still a chance to mitigate this non-sense
If Oscar’s were tomorrow, They would win all because voting had already occurred. Voting hasn’t even started. This drama has been catastrophic for the movie.

Emília Pérez is over. Hope u guys could talk about what really matters !! Great pictures without racist actors.
A VERY SMALL PERCENTAGE of the World care for this stuff, Hence, Normies
Nobody cares, just people like us who come here.
People, Twitter, Letterbox, need to take a step back.
Industry people dont have a problem with EP and aren't loud about this like Twitter because they have a life.
No Offense 😮😅😮
Ha ha! True!
30:30 Different subject but EXACTLY IT Joyce 😅
I don't think the blowback on Emilia Perez comes from thematic hangups. It seems to me mostly it comes from RUclips cinephiles who can't stand the music and the basic narrative logic of the film.
I'm very disappointed in chris and joyce as a long-term listener. Emilia perez's director said spanish is the language for the poor and immigrants. The lead actress is found to hold extremely racist views of latinos, black people, arabs and asians for years. And you two just gaslight everyone and laugh at people who feel offended by these? Minimizing the racist's behaviour is also racist.
I think this might have been recorded before those comments came out on twitter
This was recorded before everything exploded.
Annoyingly smug and arrogantly elitist is how this video comes across. Tsktsktsk
Sorry you feel that way but thanks for watching!
All the fuse of haters of this movie is because these SG haters always make it so big to hate anything SG is involved in that's all it is. I LOVED THIS MOVIE , something I have never seen before.
Karla chances are gone now in My opinion. She's now at five now.
They know that these illegals are going back, there's nothing they can do and they're just hurting their own campaign.
she was never even going to win in the first place... she was 4th at best
@shoopsho Yes I know she was at 4th but now's she's below Cynthia now.
