Brazilian "stan" here. I can't see how to not "overstate" the fact that "I'm still here" was nominated in BP category. It is a brazilian film, spoken in portuguese, with actors who are completely unknown to the public abroad, without broad release in US... There is all this challenge to make people watch the film, as Hammond highlighted... You can't just say: "Oh, look, the other actresses' films also got it". Really? The journey for "I'm still here" being nominated cannot be compared at all with these other films. If not by the huge quality of the film and Torres performance, it would have never happened. So, I can't see how Torres would not have decent odds to actually win this category. That said, I agree a lot with the analysis by Davis that BAFTA/SAG/etc awards will help us a lot in such prediction (but, still, there are ponderations here... BAFTA not even putting Torres into the long list is really something to be discussed in terms of how these awards are really receptive to latinos).

The message of this movie is great and I was looking forward to watch Demi's triumphant return. But unfortunately this film follows the trend of the world that in order to stand out you need to appeal and shock. The good stories were left behind. I like Demi and I was very happy with her return, but her performance is not even remotely worthy of an award. Little screen time (most of it sleeping naked), many filming tricks (cuts, makeup, sunglasses, ...) and most of the film was acted by someone else. I didn't hate it as most people l know. Although the film had only two nominations, Marion Cotillard won for La Vie en Rose in the Best Actress category. The other nomination wasn't for Best International Feature but for Make-up. All this to say, Fernanda Torres has an equal chance to win or even is the front-runner. And please, do not give an award for the best acting performance to an actress who gave a great speech. This is not a Speech Award. It is about an acting performance in a specific movie. Similarly, international voters should not vote for Fernando Torres just because she is international. @hugolewis4896 Demi's film is horror, there's extreme resistance to that genre and 5 noms for The Substance shows that. Mikey is too young and new to win. She's also in a film that sparked a controversy about having no intimacy coordinators. It's like Baker wanted to make a porn film with actual assault. It's inhumane at that point and The Academy holds a strong resistance against that kind of film. Cynthia has the closest chance of winning now because her narrative of being the first queer WOC actress nominee is strong. Besides, she's got an entire year before the sequel comes out and her campaign will be running all the way through next year. Her diversity narrative is strong, but it's her narrative of her dream role that will strike a chord. She's dreamed of this since she was 10 and she nailed every ounce of it all while blowing everyone away by how good she was. She added more depth, nuance and urgency to the story than it ever had because of the racial politics of the story being heightened. She deserves this more than even Demi who was never really on my best actress list of all time. She's underwhelming honestly.

Intimacy coordinators are not necessary if the people involved don't want it - Mikey said she wanted to keep the circle smaller. Also Cynthia was not dreaming of this role at 10 that's Ari. She saw the musical at 25 for the first time. Also Demi was not underwhelming she was INCREDIBLE. She is going to break that horror bias glass ceiling into pieces.
