- Utah State University has flown more experiments in space than any other university in the world. Thirty years ago Bruce Bugbee and his students began working with scientists on a NASA-funded project to develop a life-support system for people traveling away from our planet. This task requires a recycling system that produces food from waste and keeps carbon dioxide, oxygen, and water in perfect balance. This project led Bugbee to appreciate the elegance of Earth's biological systems where plants recycle gasses, purify water, and provide food. Humans are increasingly aware of the impact of fossil fuels on climate change but overlook the impact of limited water on their ability to grow food. Bugbee and his talented colleagues have sought to improve water use efficiency in agriculture. He presents an analysis on the enormous water requirement for food production, reviews the crisis in world water supply, and shows how small changes in diet can have a major impact on our global food-print.
Bruce Bugbee teaches Crop Physiology and Plant Nutrition at Utah State University where he was awarded the Graduate Mentor of the Year award in 2001, the Researcher of the Year award for the College of Agriculture in 2005, and the Governor's Medal for Science and Technology in 2012. Bugbee is a past Chairman of the Crop Physiology division of the American Society of Agronomy. NASA has funded much of his research on the physiology of plants in the controlled environments of space. Bugbee has presented at several Universities as well as conferences in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, China, and Brazil and has authored or co-authored over 100 journal articles and book chapters.

This is my new favorite ted talk. I've been a huge fan of this man for years. He has a real talent in explaining complex subjects in a way that's easy to follow .

i just found this one, but ive been following all your medical hemp/cannabis classes and as someone who is plant based .. hearing you mention our foodprint and eating less meat. almost brought a tear to my eye. and to think that was in 2013.

What about water wasted on golf fields, swimming pools, aquatic parks... ? What about destroying some crops to keep high their prices meanwhile starvation threats some people?
No golf court is ok, you can swim with the fish do, some culture grows fish at the same time, and other aquatic foods like kale spirulina, shrimp , trouts etc.This guy is a moron..

greenhouses use 98% less water than open fields. they can be CO2 enriched to speed up growth. they also don't waste any fertilizers which might go into aquifers, or destroy soil biota.
That's how it's done in the desert.

Earth Is Not A Spinning Globe
The real problem is the design of our houses. We must keep our foundations moist or the houses crumble. Also, the city-slickers have to have manicured lawns - wasting tons of water. Why? Why do we do this?

Increasing concentrations of Co2 reduces the number of stemata each leaf produces making plants grown in higher Co2 environments require dramatically less water. The need less water, they use less water and are more resistant to drought. I
The purpose of adding C02 is to increase plant growth by taking advantage of all 2000 or 1500 micro moles of photons per day of light where as without c02 you can only utilize about 900 micro moles of photons. With added light comes the need for added water and nutrients to drive the plant hard to reach maturity faster with higher yields.

We can generate electricity without fuel or pollution. We could generate electricity with Edison generators and dynamos without fuel or pollution. This is free electric power without fuel or wind or pollution. We can use the electric power without fuel to desalinate seawater with very little cost. We can recycle water and desalinate seawater. The aquifers should be preserved for emergency only. We should stop all well injection everywhere.
I like some of his studies about light for food but here someone have to tell that Utah professor that we could grow food in salt water, which is most abundant material on our planet.

As far as I know adding carbons (CO2) drastically drops the pH of the medium and water itself. Just like acid rain from CO2 pollution

I like his logic. However, I might have done more than just suggest eating more fruits and vegetables. I might have suggested that we turn our eyes to better water conservation on the 30% side or fresh water production to replace the aquifers. Maybe we could ship it from Greenland? Or get back the amount we and the plants are breathing out? LOL. Come on people, let's get that ingenuity cracking. Maybe he needs to see the Tedtalk - Drawing water out of air?

@@aebniala This guy is president of Apogy Instruments and professor at Utah state with a grow lab funded in part by Nasa. He knows what goes into to a plant and what comes out, he would give advice to farmers if they asked on any topic you could imagine.

We live on a water world --- water is not scarce. If you want more fresh water, then devote resources to desalination via evaporation using passive solar powered systems. Curious if this guy received any grants from groups connected to the sale of water futures.

So, that means the plant has more water within than carbon dioxide to absorbs, so the water within will sustain the plant, until the CO2 will come which is very low relative, so take a long time, so the water that is a lot is necessary more than human since the oxygen in compare to CO2 is higher so our need of water is less than the plant. So, water is the sustainer, but not the growth which come from other process materials. Like certain gas, certain solid, etc. Water can make you grow, but other materials make you grow faster. So, there is balance of gas / solid and liquid. Gas is tiny solid that we can't see and float in relative what we can see and stand on the ground. It is relative amount of liquid, solid, and gases.

Much of the additional space needed for animal products is due to our methods of farming animals and the kinds of animal products we eat. Eating the animal destroys the source of the food, requiring replacement. While eating eggs and cheese doesn't. Additionally, crops can be raised on the same land as many of the animals, especially the small ones. Chickens fertilize and keep bugs at bay. Rather than trying to figure out how to feed an out of control population, maybe we should focus more on limiting human reproduction.

Yes you can..Thermal distillation involves heat: Boiling water turns it into vapor-leaving the salt behind-that is collected and condensed back into water by cooling it down. The most common type of membrane separation is called reverse osmosis.

Your poor space travelers not only have to forget about getting real dairy products and animal protein to eat, they have to forget about pets, or even microorganisms, don't they? No livestock, no wildlife? You show this green area in your bubble house, but it doesn't seem like you're using any dirt on the spaceship... just hydroponics. So our priorities are different, bc I want to save the Earth, not fly away from it. The Earth can be saved with Permaculture land management. Grasslands can be restored with multi-species pasture cropping and intensive rotational grazing of livestock. The same plants and animals that once denuded the land are the answer to how to fix the land, if we use them in the proper way. We also need to stop looking at weeds and insects as problems to fix. I get that insects might be a problem on your spaceship, but here they are necessary to feed the birds. Many weeds are edible and medicinal, and their roots are good for the SOIL.
You cant use hydroponic you need gravety or the water goes every where. It logis as no logic. Earth is a spaceship..

Intro very interesting but huge logical flaw as it infers that the salt water of the oceans is not a massive source of fresh water. It is called evaporation and rain! It is not the same fraction of a percent that recycles itself. The ocean is a massive fresh water generator. I realize he eventually explains this but it makes the deceptive nature of the intro worse not better, in other words he knows better.
100 Gallons of water to make one loaf of bread. Again ignores the water cycle, as though it is like oil and burnt and gone. 100% of the water the wheat uses is returned to the water cycle, 100%.
What the actual ****? I thought the guy was going to present us with means to accelerate food production,not just make an entire lecture and then toss a phrase "don't toss food you don't eat".
He has answered your question: go hydroponics. But as accelerated as it is you need the same amount of water for these types of farms too.
The main point is that we are depleting our water and energy resources for food. If we got as efficient as it gets towards water and energy consumption in cultivating then the logical step is to cut back on foods that use more water and energy for the same amount of food calories by lowering our meat intake. Think of Mediterranean diet.

So, if we doubled the amount of carbon dioxide in the air, the plants would cut down on transpiration loss because their stomatophores would be open less often, thus reducing water loss..

Eat less meat, yeah, right. This is not biblically based. The vegetarian can't say to not eat meat and the meat eater can't say eat meat.
So in other words, vegetarians and vegans are the ones who are using much-less water and much-less farmlands, while meat-eaters, who are still representing the majority of the population are the ones who are keep putting a big demand for meat production, and as a consequence: more water use and more land being dedicated for agricultural animal feeds.
But what is the solution? Meat-eaters won't even stand to listen to the idea that their eating style/habits are causing such a big problem in our world. Meat-eaters say: "I live only once, and so, I deserve to enjoy my meals, -if I have to eat meat-less meals, then I rather want to die than eat that cardboard-tasting shit".
And while there are still big-enough demand for "meat", the meat-companies will keep on producing as much meat as much is being demanded by the market. And the governments all around the world are protecting the meat industry. So who's going to stop this reoccurring meat demand? And when? And how exactly?
While the number of people who becomes vegans each year are gradually/slowly rising, so does the number of meat-eaters rising, too, all around the world. The fact is, that most humans are still holding in their minds an "ideal"image of a meal, which (according to them) must contain meat in it to be acceptable by them or else they feel that they are being cheated and being denied their God-given human rights to eat whatever they want to eat.
If you want to make a "better"-difference, not just in the world but also for your own health (not to mention to stop animal cruelty), then go vegan, or at least become vegetarian!

One cannot be forced to look within - one has to learn about the cause and effect from ones actions [karma means action] It is all an inside job, and, unfortunately, most in this age/yuga cycle are still self-centered and self-satisfactions/tastebud oriented - instead of other and all sentient beings oriented.
But vegans still participate in the agricultural water use via manure from farmed cows used to grow their produce also only 0.1 to 1. % of the world is vegan that's why they use so little
