As always great tidbits of info. Check to see where your steering damper was manufactured. Fun to see this video and remember where we cruised almost a year ago to get a burrito.
I haven't paid for wheel alignment (tracking) for years because of this method. If you have the tools, space and patience it's worth doing yourself. Good job mate.
Nice!! These are things I need to do also. You do a great job of thinking through the process of repairs. All of us that are VW owners appreciate you sharing this stuff with us. Take care Buddy and stay warm. BigW:-)
I'm always looking for a good buy on parts with my two bus project, I found some good deals , had to get a plastic container to keep them all in or yes I will mis-palce them. The front end of the bus should be in good shape with all the new parts.
Question since you have a fiberglass buggy on front end problems mind will shake at above 55 mph I have changed everything to include tires and rims no difference so thought about adding caster shims . Im not sure about weather to add to the top or bottom ? I have mot raised or lower it but obviously it is lighter than a bug. Any suggestions ?
The caster shims go behind the bottom beam and you will need longer bolts to secure them. Since the car is lighter the springs lift the car higher as you know already. You might want to add some weight up front as a experiment. Like 50# or so. The lighter cars need everything factory tight and balanced wheels and tires. Steering box may need to be adjusted, steering coupler, tie rods etc. I found on mine that putting on a new stock steering damper made a world of difference especially when hitting those sunken manhole covers in the street
Greg, I'm glad you are enjoying yourself. I love your videos, thank you for all the cool tips and tricks you share! Did i see a high torque starter in the dune buggy floorboard? Also how do you like the stock mirror set up vs the black plastic ones you had before? Again thank you for the awesome videos, good to see you enjoying life in the garage and on the road!
I am looking at this video for one reason to see how you put the damper in. And you did not show. I tried by having it on the arm (no good) tried from passenger side (seems no good ) and driver side (seems no good) and i don't want to take the tank out. Please help cause i don't want to take the tank out. did i say that i don't want to take the tank out because I don't...
yeah, rotate your steering wheel to the left if you can figure it out your tie rods. You really need a book. If ine tie rod is long and the other is short you need to take it completly off and average it out in the middle. Or take the outside tie rod end off and unscrew it and turn the tube to the left to center it up. The steering box side is left hand thread. Did I mention get a book
Always great going back on your videos EZGZ.
✌️Peace from Melbourne Australia.
Thanks 👍
I am so happy to see you do the front end alignment the same as I do. I have been told for the past 40 years that it is wrong but it works.
Thanks for your comment and support John. It makes sense to me as well. Tire technology has come a long way too.

Close enough for gov work. Wish I had mine ready to drive. Just mounted steering wheel on my rail. Nice vlog.

Is it the same concept with a ‘72 bus?
Heck yeah I’m gonna replace the steering damper on my Baja bug, it jumps all over when I hit a bump. (It’s probably a few other things as well) lmao
All set for another long trip.
nice work

Take the tank out. Its not too hard, if ypu cant do that you wont be able to deal with tie rod end replacements that are harder to do.
Great tips !
Thanks for your comment and support

why not just take the steering wheel of and align it on the splines?
