  • Please watch: "Getting Ready For WINTER!!!! Practical Advice For Your Homestead"
    • Getting Ready For WINT... -~-
    When Justin Rhodes visited Karl Hammer and his 600 chickens he shared with Justin how he fed all 600 of them. HOW? Well with compost! However, what if you don't have 600 chickens! What if your compost pile isn't that big? What if?????
    Well here's a answer that can take 100 lbs of food and turn it in 300lbs of food!!!
    WHAT?
    From seed to feed on our homestead we grow our own nutrient dense organic fodder!
    This really is a homestead SURVIVAL skill to learn how to do!
    Farm animals from goats to chickens to rabbits all love fodder and will benefit from its nutritional benefits!
    To create fodder you basically take your grains, wheat barely rye oats, and by setting up a simple fodder system (we use buckets with drain holes) within 5-7 days of watering you will have a easy digestible rich organic green food that the chickens will love.
    Sprouting amplifies the nutrients in the grains nearly six fold and increases their digestibility, so you get more bang for your buck. Plus feeding fodder to supplement your chickens' layer feed reduces your feed costs, gives you better tasting eggs with more vibrant yolks, and increases their laying productivity with improved health.
    How could you go wrong!?
    So you dont need 600 chickens or compost to save money on feed. All you need is a bag of grain and some buckets
    Starry will show you the proof is in the pudding as she walks you thru this very simple and cheap way to feed your flock!!
    And dont forget fodder is good for any farm animal!!!

    Thankyou for the tip, I have 5 hens and 1 rooster so they will love this 😁 have you made a fly/maggot farm for your hens, bucket with holes hanging up with a small bit of rotting meat the flies lay the eggs in it the eggs turn to maggots and fall out the holes chickens eat maggots , or you can make a mealworm farm

How long to take to serve to chickens as a fodder. I has been trying to grow before and I failed. I am concerned this time . 💙 I think this method is good 😊 and easy . I hope I am successful. I'm a little bit confused. I followed up to separating the feed into the buckets with the holes in. Starry then stacked FOUR bins onto each other. Which one is the one with no holes? is it at the bottom to catch still dripping excess water?
    Then you said to continue to water them each day. Is this in the same way you showed with water onto grain in buckets with holes, directly onto the floor... then stack them again somewhere cool?
    Thank you Starry for your tips, this system would save so much money in feeding chickens and healthier for them. You really are a mine of information. Thank you.

    • @saddleridge4364
      @saddleridge4364 7 лет назад +2

      leave all the drilled buckets with fodder stacked. The water will percolate down through all the buckets due to the holes.
      Cool area helps keep mold from growing also.

    • @CupcakeBaker1982
      @CupcakeBaker1982 7 лет назад +6

      Bonnie Lipke The no hole bucket goes at the bottom, you can reuse the water from the bottom bucket to water the seeds the next day and so on. Keep all the buckets stacked so you water all of them at the same time. You want the seeds damp not floating so just a litre or so to water them with I'd say. Hope this helps xx

      I've only seen it on video and picture but your place seems to be more realistic in aspects of what and how off grid really is. My great grandfather and grandfather built a homestead in the 30's that is still owned by my family that has no electricity, water is heated in a black tank on the roof and gravity fed. The wells are run by a ram pump or hand pumps and lighting is oil lamps. Grey water is piped out for the trees and plants and sewer is a septic that does need pumping every few years. Cistern catches rain water and troughs direct it to trees and plants in addition to the grey water. Minimal garbage and compost is mandatory as the location is extremely remote and without trash collection. I lived that first hand, it's nice to see a realist show how it is. 😉

I wonder whether apple cider vinegar added to the water instead of bleach will help with the mould situation. I put a few drops of it in the chickens’ water container, and it sure helps, even though the container is scrubbed every day. I believe it also helps the birds against worms. Love your cats too.

    Been doing some research on fodder recently. I read a blog about it and the person was saying that you need to measure the feed by dry matter and not just by the actual weight of the feed. They claimed that it was actually better to just let the seed sprout, and feed it at day 4 or so which simply helps with digestion of the seed, but trying to keep as high of dry matter content as possible. Also be prepared for your birds to be pooping a lot more, since you’re adding sooo much water to the seed. I love fodder, but after doing a lot of research on the facts, sadly I have to give up my idea of making it my primary food source as it’s just not worth it. Instead, try looking into growing and feeding duckweed and some other plants that are high in protein and easy to grow. Duckweed is also high in water (obviously), but dry it out some before you feed and it will work wonderfully.
