  • Today, we will be building a chicken fodder table inside the chicken run in order to provide our chickens with continuous fresh, green forage as well as increasing the usable square footage of the pen.This allows us to be one step closer to our goal of having a healthier flock. We are always striving to create a permaculture poultry habitat. Feed your flock for less.

      Im so happy you enjoyed the video! Im always brainstorming on ways to improve all of our livestocks lives. I was really happy at how our fodder tables have turned out and hope many people find them use full too!

    I only have 3 chooks, but they are on a paved surface, so I was looking for a way to introduce some greenery for them. My run is 6ft by 9ft. I followed your example and made a table 5ft by 1.5ft. The girls love it. I couldn't get the same seed mix in the UK so I used 'chicken grass' seed mixed with some Bee Bombs and some spinach seeds. I didn't have a table to scavenge so I had to make the table too, but having the 3 parts: table, removable soil frame and a removable top frame with the top edges shaped as a perch and 1inch hardware cloth stapled underneath was a useful design decision. It was such a success I'm going to add another slightly smaller table so that they get a full 9ft by 1.5ft total area. They like to sit underneath or stand grazing on top. It also keeps the amount of muck on the floor down as a good deal of it drops onto the grass. Thanks for the idea.

    Really love this idea. I've got a small run (3.5x12.5) on a deep bedding system with a lot of vertical space for 4-5 hens. This looks like a great way to give them more ranging area and natural food. I'll have to see how I can modify it for our run. Thanks for sharing this idea. Would definitely love an update!

    Oh so that is more of a long term grazing option for the chickens, instead of using micro greens as fodder to feed them with? Very nice I like this idea a lot would love updates!

      Yes it is a long term solution. I will have to do an update video your not the first person who has asked for one. One of the things I've changed is that I added Austrian winter peas in the mix. Its January and they are still green.

    How do you replant? Do you have to remove the top wire every time?

    • @BlackRabbitHomestead
      @BlackRabbitHomestead  2 года назад +1

      unfortunately yes, the 2.0 version will have some stainless steel hinges so that we can access the soil and plants so we can clean out and add new material.

    Why on a table? Why not directly on the ground ?

    • @BlackRabbitHomestead
      @BlackRabbitHomestead  2 года назад

      by elevating it we created more usable square footage for the chickens to use. Not only above but as a rain/shade shelter below. Keeps the food dry and addittional fodder above. Its perfect if you have a small space and want to add more greens for your ladies. We always planned on adding some ground fodder too but just hadn't gotten to it yet.

    • @BlackRabbitHomestead
      @BlackRabbitHomestead  2 года назад

      Its been working out great I want to do an update video on it. If I had to change anything I would add hinges in the middle so that I can access the inside of the bed to clean out and add some fresh soil every couple of years.
