      You can sprout sunflower and peas. It only takes a few days and increases the feed value. I suspect safflower seeds can be sprouted, but have no personal experience and a quick search didn't turn up any information on that. Never sprout milo as that becomes potentially deadly. (Odd, huh?)

    I have a whole bank of the mixers that I use for compost/soil/sand/minerals/etc. for the raised beds and to actually mix concrete too... One person can mix up a surprising amount of concrete for big projects using 5 little cement mixers in a row just workin' their lil' ol' hearts out. And it's cheap, cheap, cheap. All you need is a pile of sand, a pile of gravel and bags of cheap cement. Sure beats having concrete delivered!

    Thank you for the video. The challenge is finding ingredients of the quality I want. Almost all corn and soy is GMO now. And even though oats and wheat are not (so far), the best oats are grown up north where they spray them with Glyphosate to dry them right before harvesting. Even organic oats can test positive for Glyphosate.
    I found a sprouting feed I really liked. But when shipping costs went up, they raised the cost to ship one 25 lb bag to $100+ which is just crazy. They clearly decided they didn't want to ship it anymore.
    Quality ingredients can sometimes be found locally. For example, there is a grower of organic wheat NW of OKC. They also grow field peas. Both can be sprouted and wheat berries can be grown into fodder. Flax seed is getting easier to find because more people are feeding it to their horses now.

Too much Soy can cause ova-duct prolapse. I prefer using dried mealworms for my protein source. I also grow #4 Russian Comfrey and enough corn for a year's worth of feed after it is dried. @@dollipop12 I beg to differ. These are genes extracted from one organism and inserted into the DNA of another, thus creating something very different from a naturally selectively bred hybrid.
      They've created pigs with human genes, for instance, to make a more usable heart valve to transplant into humans. And in plants, they've inserted animal and fish genes. They're playing around with genetics in a way nature has never seen.
      And our bodies do not recognize this genetic material. There is evidence that these genetically modified organisms can cause our intestinal wall to become far more permeable, thus causing "leaky gut syndrome."
      Many people have found that eliminating GMO foods from the diet helps with MANY severe modern diseases. But will such studies every be conducted in the good old US of A? Are you kidding? Who would fund such a study?
      For such studies, you've got to go overseas. There's a good reason Europe has completely banned GMO foods!

    So today I went to my local feed store to get what you recommended here and literally got laughed at. He told me that he sold chicken feed premixed and I’d learn the hard way that this won’t make a difference. Who does that?! Needless to say, I bought what I needed and mixed my feed.

    More people should consider growing buckwheat. It's small seeds that chickens can eat without grinding just added to whatever other feed they get. There's a way to grow maggots using rotten meat in a bucket with holes for the maggots to fall out on the ground for the chickens to eat. I'm sure there must be other types of larvae that can be easily grown to provide protein.

    Where I live I can collect a mix of seaweed, barnacle shell and grit from the beach which saves a lot. I fed my 3 old hens whole wheat soaked 24 hours on the ground in their chicken tractor every evening when I move the tractor and collect the eggs. Doing this all fall and winter I am now harvesting their feed from what they planted. For spring and summer i have switched to bird seed mix and flax seed which is growing fantastic and I hop to harvest in the fall.

      Most "Ordinances" are B.S. and deserve to be broken. I've seen videos where there is so much seaweed washing ashore that they have to bring in dump trucks to haul it away and don't even make a dent in the stuff. Don't tell me that I can't have a bunch of that. That would be just stupid. It's not just for chickens either. I would mix it in my huge compost piles and it should be wonderful stuff for the garden!

    Very interesting and informative. Have you considered small additions of either Brewer’s Yeast or Blood and Bone, I keep about 30 chickens and 30 ducks, in Australia it’s difficult to obtain fish or meat meal and a grain diet may sometimes be deficient in B group vitamins, notably niacin. Thanks for your thoughts.

    • @johnallison4688
      @johnallison4688 Год назад

      @@Pipsinstitches Apologies for not responding sooner. Fertiliser blood and bone is not appropriate as it usually contains animal waste. Young ducks are more reliant on an adequate Vitamin B3 inclusion than chickens and should not be fed with chicken starter or pullet grower unless it is fortified. I crush B3 “niacin” tablets into a powder These are inexpensive and available from supermarkets. When the birds can eat grain I supplement it with pig grower as suggested in the excellent “Backyard Duck Book” by Nyiri Murtagh. Incidentally my chickens like it too. An other thing , we eat a lot of rice and I always cook a lot. All my birds , large and small love it.
