Breath of the Wild leaves its players with quite a few questions by the time the credits roll, but something related to Calamity Ganon, I'm sure, tops many lists. Today we'll be talking about this version of Zelda's big bad and attempt to answer the question just what is Calamity Ganon?

Calamity Ganon is the strongest puppet / blight that Ganondorf has made. Ganondorf was sealed under Hyrule Castle. Ganondorf circumvented the seal by leaking malice out his 10,000 year old body. Calamity Ganon is the biggest and most dangerous blight, but in the end, Calamity Ganon is identical to the blights. We haven’t seen Ganons true power during the BOTW era. Just his extremely powerful puppets.

One thing to note is that 'reincarnation' and 'revival' actually have different meanings. Reincarnation is when an entity's soul or consciousness inhabits, or is born into, a new body or host after death. Revival is when a dead entity returns to life with it's original body. Calamity Ganon attempting to assume a different form throughout history is reincarnation, while Ganondorf returning to life in BotW 2 would be revival.
When the English version of the game states that "he has given up on reincarnation" it may just be saying that Ganondorf has given up on awaiting another Calamity Ganon, and instead awaits the imminent revival of his true body. Perhaps he pooled together most of his remaining Malice to create Dark Beast Ganon in an attempt to destroy the hero and ensure no one can prevent his return. Maybe a necessary result of creating DBG is that Ganondorf would no longer have the means to summon another Calamity. Thus he has 'given up on reincarnation' but is still stubbornly determined to 'revive' in his true form.

And wouldn't that also mean that demise's curse is still there after we defeat Ganon In tears of the kingdom because he was trying to revive himself (and tried to kill link by giving up on the reincarnation of calamity ganon which is just his malice) so now he can't even try to reincarnate his malice because he gave up on that and we also killed him in tears of the kingdom after he had revived at the beginning of the game, (we didn't just pause /trap him like rauru did) he or another reincarnation of demise's evil and hatred will return eventually just like after every other Villain/ganon/ganondorf .

I figured the malice just leaks out of the corpse until its strong enough the be calamity ganon. So even with the calamity destroyed, the source is not. Whether or not he has direct control over it might not be important since the malice could very well contain his will disembodied.

Considering that Calamity Ganon couldn't absorb Zelda like it did with Astor, and was subsequently imprisoned in the sanctum by her power, it makes sense that it wouldn't be able to generate a humanoid physical form and was forced to slowly eat away at Guardians to generate a new body, but when Link arrived, its body was unfinished, and its hate for the hero overwhelms Zelda's power and it breaks free prematurely to battle with Link in its incomplete form. Had Link arrived too late (which never happens in game) Ganon may have been able to consume Zelda and generate an unstoppable humanoid form to unleash a living hell upon Hyrule.
Edit: Also, it's highly implied that Harbinger Ganon merged with Calamity Ganon of the past as well, which is why it was invincible until Terrako's sacrifice weakened it.

Interestingly, If you look at the head on Calamity Ganon's physical form in the Hyrule Castle fight, its head doesn't resemble TotK's Ganondorf, but _Twilight Princess'_ Ganondorf, AKA the original one from Ocarina of Time, instead. So perhaps TotK's Ganondorf spews out malice from his imprisoned body and the original one swoops in and manifests as the calamity once he's able to gather up enough of it? It would also explain why Dark Beast Ganon looks so like TP's beast Ganon even down to sharing the same name?

In the Japanese version of a link to the past Ganon describes Agahnim not as his alter ego but as his "bunshin" a word that depending on the context could mean something like copy, clone or soul split
This implies that Ganondorf is capable of creating sentient phantoms that have a copy of The demon king's mind inside of them
Since the first teaser for the sequel to breath of the wild I have speculated that Ganondorf was controlling Calamity Ganon during the second great calamity until Zelda sealed it within Hyrule castle weakening Ganondorf's control over it and putting the blight Ganon's into a 100 year slumber until Link awakened the dormant sheikah towers

Awesome theory. I also avoided Ganon till the end of the game, and wasn't expecting the cyborg spider thing. And I agree about Calamity Ganon being a separation or segment of Ganondorf's soul or hatred in the form of a force of nature that needs a host. I hope we learn more in BotW II next year, if not, that's okay too.

  • @THEKINGOFGAYMUSIC

Well the eyes on malice are his eyes. He is like slime.. even when it separates... It's still one. From what I see his power oozes out to do his bidding. So his conscience is still with his body but he send out shards. Like how he was still in botw and, traveled back with Terrako and, attempt to dominate there... A piece of malice is also a piece of Gannon. The many are one kinda thing So, when you fight the blights.. you are fighting Gannon... A piece of him. So Calamity is Gannon. He keeps the Hero's busy until the Host Ganon the man gets free. He will attempt to dominate one way or another.

Exactly! I see it as Malice = Calamity Ganon. So any instance of malice we see is technically a part of the Calamity Ganon hivemind. So for Ganon to take a physical form outside of malice he needs some kind of host.

Consider merging this theory with other ideas: 1) @Zeltik and someone else considering that Ganondorf is the power source of the Ancient Ovens (or whatever they're called); 2) your proposal here that Calamity Ganon was being forged from ancient Sheikah technology; 3) the idea that Princess Zelda is trapped inside Calamity Ganon, struggling to maintain the seal; 4) the absorption of Astor to make the Hyrule Warriors' version of Ganon; 5) the fact that Calamity Ganon was not yet finished; 6) the similarities between the cocooned Calamity and Cherry, both producing powerful tools through ancient oven-like tech; and 7) the possibility that Zelda was sealing herself too (which Astor could not do), to prevent the completion of Calamity Ganon despite 100 years of development. I think there's an interesting overarching approach here that shows that not only is Ganondorf not dead, and not fully "locked down" by the hand, but is quite aware that through the hand he's feeding ancient Sheikah technology, and found one of those outlets could be corrupted and fed in secret. He was simply unable to complete a usable form due to Zelda's ability to hold him off. Now that the hand is off, he doesn't need that corrupted outlet, he can step out as-is in BOTW 2.

I thought the final boss was, somehow, going to be the giant legless boar form that's always circling the castle.
Imagine, Link defeats this... Let's call it Ganonblight, and then, the spider dissipates into a whirlwind of malice, carrying Link into the air and out a window(or brick). Link falls and, via the paraglider, lands in Hyrule Field.
From there it's a struggle to survive. Ganon would fly up and dive, attempting to consume Link multiple times, as well as scatter shooting malice. Zelda gives Link the bow of light to deter Ganon while Link scales Hyrule Castle, this time devoid of enemies.
As Link climbs atop the highest tower, he gains the opportunity to climb onto the Calamity itself. Numerous Malice Eyes form to oppose Link's progress, testing both paragliding and climbing as Ganon attempts to shake Link off.
The Malice that makes up the Calamity is caustic, so Link has constantly attack as he makes his way to the head, like cutting grass except the grass is poison.
By the time Link gets the head, that third eye appears for Link to wail on, but it's not entirely safe as the "poison grass" regrows and the Calamity continues to flail.
As Link deals the finishing blow, the Calamity writhes and falls to Hyrule Field, Link using the Paraglider to land safely, and then the Calamity forms into Dark Beast Ganon. The difference here? The various eyes can fire malice to make up the Ganon's slow speed(though Ganon will get faster as the fight goes on), and second difference? Link has to fight on foot, without a horse to increase his agility.

My theory, as it stands, is that Ganondorf made two wishes on the Triforce during Ocarina of Time. First, when he entered the sacred land to steal the Triforce After the Hero of Time drew the Master Sword, he wished for the power to rule over Hyrule. Later, when he overcame the Hero of Time to bring about the Downfall Timeline, he united the Triforce again, and wished to live forever.
The Triforce did its best to grant both of these wishes, but it is, at its best, a mere shadow of the power of the balanced power of the three Creator Goddesses, so its attempts to grant Ganondorf's wishes were less effective than Ganondorf expected.
First, at the wish for the Power to Rule Hyrule, the Triforce split itself and broke into three pieces, granting Ganon the Triforce of Power, but having its other two pieces forever tending to gravitate toward those who would oppose him. Second, at the wish to live forever, the Triforce created Ganon, a magical form, which would reform and regenerate over time when it was destroyed. Thus was the Reincarnation cycle of Demise's curse given up on, as Ganondorf would never fully die to allow the Curse to be reborn (as it is in the Spirit Tracks Villain, Cole).
I maintain that each time Ganon is defeated and sealed away, or destroyed and forced to reform itself, Ganondorf's anger and malice grows, and his mental state dimisnishes, increasing the overall raw power the next appearance of Ganon has when it arises, until it finally takes on the form of the raw, elemental malice that we see in Breath of the Wild. It isn't a thinking being anymore. It is just a Raw force of corruption that does what it can to fulfill Ganondorf's desire for dominion.

The thing that is threatening about them is not that they'll take over the world, that they'll kill everything, that they'll do something else completely absurd that involves destruction on a large scale, it is the fact that they merely exist.
The Corruption/Crimson from Terraria is threatening because they seem so... antithetical to everything else in the game.
Judgement from Hyper Light Drifter always sends a chill down your spine simply by the way it appears next to the protagonist.
And the Calamity is threatening because it is an ominous presence, forever watching you, spreading its plague.

I personally subscribe to the theory that Calamity Ganon was just a puppet, if only because of his weird connections to Puppet Ganon from Wind Waker. Both versions of Ganon feature the same forms: Serpent, Spider, and Boar. Given how specific these forms are, I highly doubt that's a coincidence.

i think calamity ganon, isn't just a force of nature, but also just a true monster. a being born out of pure hate and just destroys, it doesn't think, it can't think, it just destroys. also i think calamity ganon was always trying to become a humanoid form, even in breath of the wild because we see it have humanoid arms. In breath of the wild, zelda came in and stoped him, slowing his incarnation into a humanoid form substantially, an when link got to the castle, it frantically gathered all the tech around it and tried to make it fit into a complete form before link got there but it was too late, link was already there. realizing it might be destroyed, it popped out of the cacoon to kill link. in age of calamity calamity ganon was able to reincarnate much quicker, since zelda didn't put a seal on calamity ganon, and when link and the others got to the castle, ganon absorbed astor because it required more energy, finally being able to reach it's complete form. also i do think ganondorf's spirit is in calamity ganon because calamity ganon has to be sealed away instead of being destroyed like the blight ganons, and as to how ganondorf's spirit returned to it body, either zelda's sealing power is connected to the hand seal, so ganondorf's spirit returned to his body. or ganondorf's spirit didn't return at all, thats why ganondorf's eyes are eyes of malice, it's the malice possesing ganondorf's body to find his spirit to revive himself, and zelda has ganondorf's spirit, along with the rest of calamity ganon in a seal, that would be and interesting concept to explore in BOTW 2.

Because calamity Ganon is the rage of demise and Gannon for the first time an uncountable eons is finally free the triforce of power is finally purified it is no longer tainted by demise you see that red puffle light and then there is Golden light it shows the last of calamity demise exiting Gannon Ganon going freedom.

True, even if the series ever ended up breaking Demise's Curse I'm sure Ganon would weasel his way back in somehow!

in my personal theory and world because the legend of zelda series has always promoted using the games as a skeleton to write your own story and ideas i always thought ganon was an omnipotent being who is one of the peices of triforce always hating hylians as a sort of satan of the zelda universe as apposed to hylia existing solely for the purpose of hatred and power using any form he can such as ganon dorf who is but a devout follower of ganon and will take long to regain his power

Plus it's a metaphor giant robo Gannon inside the giant robo Gannon is a spider now Harkins back to Nintendo 64 the giant tree had a what inside of it that were slowly corrupting it and killing it what if eventually demise gets separated from Canon and Gannon matches to userp demises power leaving a heavenly weekend mortal demise and Gannon uses that power to restore himself.

Reincarnation and revival is not the same thing so both versions sre correct Demise gave up on being reborn in a new body every few hundred years and instead revives the calamity endlessly

I don't know that the ganondorf on botw 2 is not reincarnation it's more like reanimated of a old recarnation. I know it's confusion but it makes sense if you look at your video!!..

Personally I think we should wait until the zelda team confirms age of calamity is canon before jumping to that conclusion. It was developed by a third party, so I will remain sceptical. However, that doesn't mean we can't or shouldn't make theories about age of calamity. The zelda team might be inspired by age of calamity regardless of whether it is canon or not.
