Three little Orphans, 1, 2, 3, without a home OR a family tree. In 1987 situational comedy Horsin’ Around premiered on ABC. But Horsin’ Around ran for NINE seasons, and overall, we see VERY little of it. But there are SO many little scenes, offhanded lines, jokes and sequences that give us a ton of insight into some of the things the series did. So today, I want to look at the entire history of the program, try my best to piece together every known episode, storyline, moment, behind the scenes information and place it all in a timeline. In other words, we were lost, but now we’re found, and we’re Horsin' Around.

Seeing Sarah Lynn grow up on Horsin' Around in chronological order(from the age of THREE!) really does make Bojack sleeping with her later in life a lot more disgusting. You'd think spending nine years watching a child grow up while playing a paternal role to her would naturally deter that kind of behavior

BoJack is a bad guy.
I used to love Horsin Around as a kid but i can’t watch it the same knowing what Bojack Horseman did to Sarah Lynn.
Sarah Lynn deserved better.
See, that’s why I prefer Around. No more pesky horse

It's just a TV show bro you can separate the art from the artist
I do not, at ALL, remember Bradley’s name having hitler in it and hearing you say it made me choke on my drink.
That’s what makes it great, like, not only is there an actor with the last name of Hitler, but they hired him anyway.
My favourite part is that his last name is hyphenated. He could have just had the last name Smith but no everyone wanted Hitler as his last name.
His grandparents must've escaped from Germany during you-know-what. I admire them for keeping their family name and not letting a certain historical figure tarnish their name.
@@beckymay1732 There probably already was a Bradley Smith and he had to stand out. That's my headcanon anyway. Many stars have done similar things, e.g. Emma Stone's name is actually Emily, Julianne Moore was Julie Anne Moore etc. In Bradley's case, the Hitler part was unfortunate. I love how they never address it.
There were these Bojack Horseman cards that were sold years ago. I never got them, but I saw a picture of one that says “fun fact: Horsin Around actor Bradley Hitler-Smith is related to American settler, John Smith!”
The Angela episode kills me every time. She was also a closeted gay woman who hid her sexuality and still canned Herb for being gay, towing the line, and never seems to have been affected by it. I think that episode hit so hard, especially since Bojack never seems to make that connection.
She was gay?? When? Did I just miss that lol

Actually, I can remember a scene in one episode where Bojack and Mr. Peanutbutter were in a museum that had one of the sets from "Mr. Peanutbutter's House" and I guess Bojack decided to finally give Mr. PB the crossover episode that never happened because they went on to that set piece and acted out a scene.

Mr Peanutbutter's House was at least heavily implied to be an NBC show, wasn't it? Sure seemed like the show's outro was very inline with an NBC aesthetic, while Bojack was clearly an ABC show, likely a TGIF offering. Not too many inter-network crossovers.

You can imagine my disappointment when I saw "Horsin' Around" appear on my Netflix feed after having caught up with Bojack up to that point, only for it to be just a rip of the theme song.
Exactly if they made an actual season of the show with each episode being a random episode from each of the seasons, showing a noticeable decline in quality as time goes on until the last episodes Bojack is obviously high, and the other actors are hamming it up except for like one or two.
@@pintolerance785 They would totally explain away Olivia's absence by saying something like "Olivia went away to summer camp!" or "space camp!" or whatever and then have either Goober or Olivia's long-lost half-sister come in to replace her for a few episodes. The only solar eclipse to be visible from America during the shows runtime was in May 1994, around the time the final episodes of season 7 would've aired. Meaning that episode like took place in season 7.
My personal theory is that it was filmed prior to the eclipse and aired a few days before as sort of a PSA.
There was another eclipse on January 4, 1992 that Los Angeles got to see the tail-end of just before sunset. I could see some Hollywoo writers being inspired by that and then going on to write the episode. That would be a joke in BoJack: Countless people in Southern California went blind and they realized they had to warn the rest of America.
@@kipbong-un1152 either way I still see them airing it around the time of The '94 eclipse. Even if it would mean they came up with the idea in '92 and sat on it for 2 years.
@@travisthecancerpill3403 Agreed.
Impressive how much went into planning this show within the show. I wonder how much of this came from the writers wanting to vent about pop culture

I never caught on that Bojack told Herb to get cancer at their initial meeting. It just makes the fact that Herb actually did get cancer so much worse

@@mythra7174 oh MB lol it's been a while since I watched the show tbh. I'll edit my comment
It's pretty on the nose. From what I recall, we actually see that first meeting after he's already established in the show to have cancer.
@@Jotari The first meeting inuyasha is referring to is the flashback to when they were younger and Herb was heckling BoJack's standup routine.
@@mythra7174 Yes, where he says get cancer. I'm pretty sure we see that flashback after we see him in the present.
The running joke might also be that Herb is not topical and is always adding jokes that are not relevant. A lot of shows that tried to be “with it” missed the mark so it wouldn’t surprise me if that was the gag that he’s always a year behind.
especially since at 24:10 herb himself jokes that hes topical, which would be ironic if this timeline sequence is correct
Horsin' around making an Oliver North joke three years too late actually makes total sense considering the quality of show it's frequently seen to be
When you compare how adorable the horsein around show was and how beloved it was by people to how traumatic it’s affects were for everyone involved. It’s kind of crazy something so wholesome cause so much pain. But then given the all quiet onset documentary that just came out, I feel the same way about a lot of the shows I grew up watching. I think Bojack Horseman did a good job showing that wholesome children’s content sometimes has horrific consequences
Joelle got anorexia, Sarah Lynn became an addict, Bradley's parents divorced.
To be honest i wish we got a spin off of the Horsin Around show so we can watch it without having any kind of cutting away to the actual show.
SAME 😭
and I would like to watch the episode with the disappearing coffee mug
Same; Netflix has the Horsin Around Intro in it’s catalogue, at first I thought IT WAS the series, oh man, I was very dissapointed when I found out.
Just watch 'Full House' it's the same thing
It's still haunting me how Bojack knew Sarah Lynn since she was 3 years old onset and then had sex with her when she was 30.
Its a good reminder that, as much as we may have grown to care for Bojack and wanted to see him get better, he was still a huge piece of shit for the longest time. Hes the sort of person we would all hate in real life, and with good reason. I apreciate the series adknowledges this by having him end up in prison, which is what I thought he deserved since three seasons before when he caused Sarah Lynns death. Never seen any other series where i feel equal parts love and hate for their protagonist.
I honestly want an actual Horsing Around show as a spin-off to Bojack, where we watch the filming of the show while focusing on the kids as they are growing up
The actor why played Ethan i want to say his name was... Bradly?
Was pitching Ethan Around but i dont know why it never aired
That's honestly a great idea. Since we know most of BoJack's, Sarah's and Herb's lifes it would be interesting to see Bradley and Joelle as the new main characters. Kinda like _Better Call Saul._
that's a cool idea! maybe one day we'll get a bojack spin off

The scene where Olivia says “you saw me naked, now I have to see u naked” is based on an episode of friends. Not a good look, but at least it has context
It was also in an episode of the Canadian cartoon 6teen, where one of the characters accidentally saw his stepsister naked, and she got revenge by putting a photo of his naked 6 year old self on display at his workplace.

@@twinzzlers that's just the theme song
Todd and Bojack watching each Christmas special each year would have been great as an addition to Bojack. Strange they only did it once, especially considering that one Christmas special was, I think, released very early on in the show's lifespan, I think between the first and second seasons.
in the UK we have a chain of eateries called the Hungry Horse and I could see at the height of BoJack's fame Bojack trying to open the first Hungry Horse in the U.S. The closest thing the USA has to a Hungry Horse would be a Golden Corral.
I ate at the Hungry Horse tonight 🤣🤣🤣
Quick tip: It's not printed on the menu anymore, but you can still order an extra steak with any steak meal. I've heard of eating ass, but this is ridiculous!
A corral is something we keep livestock in, like horses... And livestock eats at troughs... And a buffet is like a trough??!
It's kinda weird how many sitcoms there are about single dads.
probably because most people they expect to be watching those shows are women in their 20s and 30s! so they market single dads as the central point so women can insert themselves into a situation where they are present and daydream about this life, which would be much harder to do morally if a character is shown to have a loving, caring, and devoted wife, because it mentally feels like this desired man is a "cheater." on the flip side, dads are able to see these characters and imagine situations involving their own life (like a self insert) and have a rotating cast of beautiful women chasing after this average man! both of these situations are fairly common fantasies, so sitcoms market themselves to allow people to fantasize and keep watching the show, boosting ratings and viewership
I'm still miffed we never got a crossover episode with Mr. Peanutbutter's House!
can we all just appreciate the depth of this?
Honestly the Ethan around area got me the feels a bit. So depressing
Such a sad part of the show 😔
Very cool...but you forgot about the episode where the Horse has to give Ethan a pep talk after he finds out that his crush only asked him to the dance because her friends were having a "dorkiest date" contest...and the paper cup!
Omg i never new they edited "Horsin' around" and rerelease it as "Around". Around is one of my favorite shows but it makes so much sense that they took out bojack horseman after all the controversy and his arrest. And explains some of the pacing issues people have with the show.
Now, build a painstakingly Mr Peanutbutter's House Timeline
So the last episode of "Around" was just the kids crying in a hospital for no reason?
Some of the buildings in the Chicago skyline shots weren’t built until well after 1996 (like the Millennium Tower seen next to the Buckingham Fountain), but I’m willing to overlook this since it’s unknown if Chicago’s architecture would have been different in the Bojack timeline.
I remember putting this on so that I can have "background noise", and after a while looking up at the screen and realizing that this show was on another level. I restarted the episode sat down and paid full attention and binge watched. Good times.

I didn't know how much I needed to know lore for Horsin around. But I love this so much
Personal theory, they wrote around the Horse's death in Ethan Around by having Bojack play the Horse's twin brother.
The Ollie North joke seems like the kind of thing sitcoms did all the time-that is, do topical jokes way past their expiration date.
I remember watching Taxi and not getting any of the jokes, despite it being a current episode, because (as my mom told me) they were referencing things that had happened during a previous administration. (Carter when Reagan was president)
Personally Ethan's catchphrase is iconic people really didn't understand the depth and importance of the line
If the makers of bojack horseman decided to make a 9 season animation of horsin around… I would love that and watch so often
Unfortunately, Netflix owns Bojack Horseman and the creators after years of dealing with Netflix have a very negative relationship with them. There will likely never be anything in the Bojack universe again unless Netflix decides to take on an entirely new staff to produce it.
10:04 I always interpreted the message about Santa Claus in that episode as being an allegory for religion.
OJ guest staring in a kid educational show actually happened. It never aired and considered lost media.
Especially throughout the 80s and 90s, this wasn't really ever addressed or thought about, I think; and it definitely continued in Hollywood throughout all the way until the 2010s; but working with kids, especially ones as young as the kids in these shows - real or fake - requires a lot of special skills. I work with kids at the moment and it requires a lot of care and tact, especially when you normally don't have practice interacting with kids. As you grow up, you keep feeling the same, you sometimes feel like you never changed and still are a kid yourself, but that's not true. To them you're the old man, the adult and there's a lot of responsibility in how you act and interact with them, that comes with that. And to you, they can't be equals. Sure, you need to respect them as you would a fellow adult, but you can't treat them like an adult, you can't say the same things, you can't be the same person around kids that you are among peers and that's something you need to learn.
And not everyone is capable of understanding that. I'm positive that a lot of childhoods were destroyed in Hollywood because adults didn't treat kids appropriately, i.e. as kids. And from the perspective of nowadays, I wouldn't have let Bojack anywhere near kids that age. I myself would be apprehensive about working with the kids in Horsin Around like that, because the studio seemed to foster a kind of pseudo-familiar relationship between the cast and that's simply not appropriate. Especially with Bojack, who as we now know has a history of being unable to seperate on-screen from reality
I refuse to watch Horsin' around since the studio decided it was a good idea to take out the horse! I know Bojack is controversial but you can't take the Horse out of Horsin' around!
If you support Horsing Around, you're literally supporting the murder of Sarah Lynn

If you are ever gonna do another Bojack video I suggest doing one maybe on parental relationships for the main characters. okay so I haven't seen anyone talk about Mr Peanutbutter's house and I have 1 question. The pilot and other episodes state that the kids are twin girls Zoe and Zelda, but in one of the season 3 episodes (possibly The Shot when PB goes to the oval office set with Bojack) Mr Peanutbutter mentions a boy named Zachary??? Either they added another kid or my personal theory: either Zoe or Zelda is trans and Mr Peanutbutter's House was ahead of it's time.
Dang, I don't know how I missed this. Was there no third child in Mr. Peanutbutter's house?

I really like the idea the show was in Colorado as it shows Diane moved to Colorado and got the life she wanted but no longer relying on Horsin Around to give that to her. Idk just her moving there to be with Guy while also being where they lived in the show she watched to feel like she had a home is a really sweet ending for her. She doesn’t stay in Colorado and moves on to Texas eventually with Guy even if she had to linger behind for a bit due to BoJack’s failed attempt

I don't see anyone else bringing attention to that so I guess is not too much of a big deal
I think the joke went over your head. It's because the situation is so creepy, uncomfortable, and tone-deaf that makes it funny (to us real-life BoJack Horseman audience, not to the fictional audience). It's a commentary on old TV episodes that age like milk.
