What a stupid comment. It's not like you see a shark every day. If you did, thousands of people would be dying every day. To say you were surprised doesn't necessarily mean you didn't think it was possible. My mother surprised me at 3am in the kitchen this morning because she is never up at that hour. Get it?
No seriously. I’ve surged there and the locals told me they’re very used to seeing the sharks or feeling them bump them but they just try not to react. Beautiful beach!! Great people too.
I actually use this axiom to sort of build up my confidence I think of all the times I've been surfing, and assume I've safely shared the water with sharks plenty

One swam under my board while and surfaced not too far from us. I was 100 % convinced it was a shark. I had to get back to shore because it scared the living shit out of me.
@Tone Bone Same here. I lived in Florida for 8 years and one day when I was standing in waist deep water on Sanibel Island. I saw a couple fins sticking out of the water coming right at me. Before I could even turn around and head to the shore two dolphins came right up by my legs and brushed against me herding some bait fish. In that half a minute I really thought I was going to die or at least be maimed and crippled
I had the exact same experience in the ocean once. I got “test bumped” by a shark before.... I was thrown off my air mattress many feet into the air.... I shit my bathing suit when I realized no one else was in the water with me...
@@Baneslayer where did this happen? I would have ran across the water 😂 Where i live the scariest things are some non harmful jelly fish in the ocean lol
sh4rk b4it There is a lot of hate for sharks, and certainly, they do attack people (I’m an Aussie, and there are several fatal shark attacks here every year, and that’s excluding the many non-fatal), but the reality is, if those sharks wanted to actually eat the people that they bit, then there would be no actual body to recover. If a shark wanted to eat a person, it’d just fucking eat the person! Sharks are big, and have a massive bite force with hundreds of teeth that do a lot of damage, but if you actually see the shark before it bites you, you’re probably going to be fine, as it already knows you’re not dinner, and more often than not (even though it’s probably little consolation), once it’s taken an investigation bite, it’ll realise you’re way too lean, and far too bony, and it’ll move on...of course, that one bite may remove a limb. But hey, it’s got no hands to see if you’re a seal, or a turtle. Sharks are amazing creatures. We’re killing them in their millions, and they don’t deserve the bad rap.
Southern Cali beaches are pretty safe. I swim at Huntington Beach, Newport, and laguna all the time with no incidents. You make it seem as if it is Florida or Australia which do have a high amount of shark attacks.
Global Dayz really because there has been only one fatal attack of the west coat in years that happened in my hometown . Solana Beach Ca . Care of mistaken identity.
Also there’s a need of education about sharks guys. The major part of the shark attacks can be avoided in some ways, for example: swim or surf with at least one person if you’re not sure it’s safe, don’t go into the water if it’s dirty because of the rain, when you wait for a wave turn your board in different directions because from the bottom you look like a predator and not like an injured or dead animal in the surface, if there’s one close avoid slapping the water when swimming, the first is not to attract their attention. But if they come, you need to remain calm, you can change their curse by putting your hand on their nose and turn them to other side if not attacking, and if they attack, aim your fingers to their eyes because they are so sensible. Obviously there’s the need of being cold minded and everything.
@@rubencortes4793 exactly I live in south Florida and if you are educated on the habitat and animals, you kinda just go with mother nature. My back yard has gators too. We do have more incidents though, especially with all the species of animals. Florida fish and wildlife. Good to eat as well.
Trust me buddy, you’ve been closer. That’s just the closest you’ve seen. They are all around us out there... thankfully sharks tend to leave humans alone for the most part.
Russian roulette. If I was a shark I would eat humans because they are so easy to catch. We are definitely good food for them. Perhaps at times they are focused on their usual food, but I would never gamble my life on it because you wouldn’t stand even a slim chance if it decided to attack. There are deaths and feeding on people from bears, people who think they really don’t want to eat us.
@@AndrewJamesMcQuinn usually that’s a last resort when animals are starving and all their prey are scarce. There’s a story from WW II where Soviet and nazi forces allied together temporarily to fight of man eating wolves. There were also other attacks on civilians the preceded the event. These incidents are collectively called the Kirov Wolf attacks. Supposedly, any dogs and cattle had dwindled to the point where the only widely available food source was…humans. Particularly children.
@@AndrewJamesMcQuinn sharks don't like the taste of humans. Usually they take a single bite, and quickly let go because we taste bad to them. Granted....a single bite can usually be pretty severe, especially if the shark is big. But, for the most part, sharks will leave humans alone unless A) they feel threatened, B) we accidentally STEP on them (more common than you might think on beaches), or C) they are SEVERELY hungry to the point where even eating something as disgusting tasting to them as a human, is better than starving.
@@Aizen2468 does that mean of the 700 men who died of shark bite from the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, that none were eaten? I used to surf alone, way out the back of a beach in Port Stephens, Australia. I surfed this place for about 12 years. Then a guy doing research on Great Whites started pulling in and tagging Great White juveniles. In one month he tagged 48 of the buggers, and they were over 2 metres long. I was shocked. Then I started thinking where is Mum and Dad. Never surfed that spot again.

Sharks overall kill around 5 people a year. Global population of surfers is somwhere between 17 to 30 million people. Doesn't seem like a huge risk to be honest. But hur hur, that one movie says that sharks are just evil, twisted killing machines so ocean must be a deathtrap because Jaws and every other movie with sharks is a perfect reflection of reality!
Hey, I could be killed by a stray bullet or in a car accident tomorrow. Might as well enjoy one of the things I love the most in life. If you've never been surfing, you're right, you can't understand
Does the risk of driving sound like a great risk? Or getting a drink on the van machine? Many many times more people die because of cars and vending machines than sharks.
Danny Colón I understand that feeling the best thing to do to get over that feeling is to go out with other people and after a while you will calm down

Happened to me in South Africa.. Just a wee lad of 14 and learning to body board. Anyway, there was a great set out and everyone was heading to the beach. Got out and paddled to the waves and then suddenly saw a dark cloud go through a wave. Of course you think it’s your mind playing tricks on you… but it happened again. The shore line wasn’t close by so start booking it back and shouting at everyone coming in “there’s a shark there’s a shark”. Got the the shoreline and one of my buddies who had seen what I’d seen said. “Did you see it did you see it”!? One of the local walked by and said “you guys are idiots, that’s not a shark it’s a dolphin”
Well the shark 🦈 wasn't exactly gunning for him or he wouldn't be here, probably 🤔 a reef or something less dangerous. White sharks tiger sharks bull sharks are the most popular attackers in close to shore maybe a blue fin might come in, when I surfed I could see reef sharks go under my board and it didn't stop me from surfing, u must know where ur at and what possibilities are there 😉
If you ever SEE a great white, it's terrifying, but you're probably gonna be fine. If a great white wants to hurt you, you will not see it. Granted, I would've paddled like hell too hahaha.
Thinks he can out paddle a shark... jaja, Never ! We surf sano all the time, they are all over the place, gw live in the ocean, they eat seals just another day!
True, Great Whites will attack from below you and use the surprise attack. I surfed in Florida from 16-22 y/o Jax. to Daytona Beach. Never saw one that close to me but I did have things??? swim past my legs several times. That alone will make you crap yourself. LOL
thats probably true in some cases but the thing about great whites and also other shark species is that they will circle around you for some time before they eventually move in closer and closer on you and suddenly they will bump into you for a test bite. A test bite from a great white can be fatal and is very dangerous. If you see a great white like this surfer did you need to leave the occean in a controlled manner. If he stayed longer its very likely that the shark would eventually take a test bite. Great White Sharks often do surprise attacks but a test bite isnt a surprise.
first time i ever saw a shark was when i was surfing at jacksonville beach pier with my homie. spinner shark breached (went airborne) like 15 feet from us. Since then ive seen lots of sharks cruising around, they very rarely bother surfers, and when they do its like u said, you dont see it comin lol.
If you look closely you can see that part of the time that he is paddling, it is actually sped up, so no - he isn't traveling at an abnormally high rate of speed or a human on the water. PS: I picked this up fairly quickly because i am a sound/visual effects engineer; In fact, i noticed the 2nd time i watched it.
I felt so scared like Joe even more when you were swimming to the coast, I thought the shark would catch or bite you from below the surface. Btw, thanks for sharing it and I'm glad you weren't injured.
Great footage David. You reacted exactly how you should have, remaining calm and getting to shore. We surf with sharks all the time, we just don't always see each other. Nice board!
The Zen Fool Well we all saw him paddling to the shore super quickly but he was really calm. Usually people never react like him, they just panic and that's the first thing to agitate a shark.
My father was stationed at Camp Pendleton for about 6 yrs, we camped at San Onofre many times. Its an awesome place to dig in the tide pools at low tide. I learned to surf, and body surf there, of course that was 40+ years ago. I read in 2013 I believe, that marine biologist found out that San Onofre is a pupping area for great whites. They stay in the area till they reach maturity, which can be 10-13feet. Juveniles only feed on fish and other sea life, their teeth are not mature enough for larger sea mammals, such as seals.
Sharks are, like many other animals, curious about new or unusual objects or creatures in their environment. Obviously they don't have hands, so the only way they can interact with other things is...by using their mouths. The grand majority of shark bites are simply them trying to figure out what they hell they are looking at. I mean, can you blame them? I've seen some freaky lookin' folks at the beach.
I was out at Jax Beach FL as a teenager with my brother in the outside break on a pretty big day. While we we sitting on our boards with about 5 other surfers around us, I saw a bouy on a braided line being dragged by something underwater. We all just sat there watching that bouy going through the water coming in our direction. I saw the number on it as it made a first pass. Then it turned. Just at that moment a HUGE dorsal fin surfaced just like the one in all of the Jaws movies, then a pectoral fin about 10 feet behind it. After freezing in absolute horror, I looked left and right to my brother and the rest of the surfers. They had already turned to paddle and leave me. I remember everyone saying "dude, great white, great white." As I turned to depart, the fins went under as it was heading in my direction. The shore was about 300 yards away and I paddled so hard. We were all just thinking to outrun the next guy, but I was last and that bouy was coming for me, so I had a choice. Catch the wave and risk wiping out, or stop and hope it will go right past me, and wish for the best. Everyone was so far ahead and then they caught the first wave in the set leaving alone in the water. At that point, I knew I only had one true choice, to catch the next approaching wave and hopefully outrun it because the bouy was causing drag. So I paddled hard to catch it slashing like crazy in the water. I caught it, but the wave was roo huge to belly ride so I had to stand up. Then I dropped in the face of this huge wave and right at the bottom turn... BAM, I totally ate it. Those were the longest 30 seconds of my life and I prayed like I have never prayer before as I waited for the huge intense bite. After getting knocked around for a bit, I surfaced and gasped for air while trying find my board floating 8 feet away. I finally got to my board and got on. I was totally disoriented and I was looking around for the direction of land, while waiting to be eaten. THANK GOD I caught the white water of another wave and I took it most of the way in. By then, my brother, the 5 guys who were out there and the rest who were in the inside break were all standing on the shore with the lifeguard. Everyone was out of the water and EVERYONE thought it got me. It was like a Jaws movie. Everyone was hugging me and saying, "wow you made it!" So I told my uncle, who was a scientist, that we had seen a great white and he said, "there are no great white's in FL." I told him what we saw and the number on the bouy. My other uncle who was a marine biologist said he read about a group of marine biologists who were tagging Great Whites with numbered bouy's up north before the winter came. We later confirmed it was a GW that had been tagged. Osearch now uses digital tracking and data shows GW's regularly go offshore near Jax beach. Scariest day of my life.
I've been closer...and I didn't have a surfboard. I was snorkeling in Molokini Crater, totally clueless, and had swam off a little by myself, when a tiger shark started following me. He was super casual about it, but when I went left, he went left, when I went straight he went straight. The guy who ran the snorkeling boat spotted him and got on the loud speaker and is like, "Yeah, that's about an 10 footer but he probably won't bother you, you aren't on his menu. Just head towards the boat." I know that feeling when you start moving fast, lol, at any minute expecting a hard tug from under the water. But I just moved quickly and really, really steadily even though my heart was pounding. I was just a mom from Chicago! I didn't know anything about sharks until I saw that one. Now I live on the West coast and I just figure they're always out there, what can you do.
ChicagoCathrun Sounds like what happened to me on the Big Island. Swam out too far and the current was strong. Im 200 Yards out when I see a big Tiger about 50 Yards from me. Scary shit man
That is so funny, I was diving Molokini on the north corner closest to Maui. I was descending and saw a Tiger almost on the bottom at 125 feet by the cement anchor cable. I was dropping right on top of him. When I got down there he was gone. I was waiting for my dive buddy wife to descend when her regulator's O-ring blew and she spit her regulator. So I was stuck buddy breathing back to the dive boat. Never got to see that Tiger again. It was an exciting dive though. I went back down looking.
ChicagoCathrun I saw a 15 ft great white charging at me I pooped my pants luckily I made it out in time to shore but I never went back in the water again😃😤😳😩😨😵😱
The ocean is so beautiful and I'm always in complete awe at the amazing life going on down there, it's like a whole other planet, that being said, I'm terrified of sharks and so I will respect their home and admire from afar 😍😍😍
I've been flying drones looking for sharks for the past month now and I've grown such a respect for the ocean and the life that's in it. At the end of the day that's their home and we're merely guests in their house.
I've been a scuba diver for over 20 years, I was a helicopter pilot for the Navy for several years, and I took up flying drones as a hobby a few years ago. If people had a clue, most would not get back in the ocean. Ignorance is bliss.
What he should say is, “That’s the closest I’ve ever been to a shark in the water that I know of.” If he surfs regularly, he has probably been in close proximity to sharks a ton and never knew it. By the way, I swam with a shark while snorkeling in Maui. I was the only in the water at 7:00am, and he was within 10 yards, and he was a big, white tipped reef shark. He went his way, and I went mine. I felt like a badass telling the story later.
Jason Jackson oh I was super terrified at first, but he really did just look at me and swam away. They say that if you saw the shark, it already decided you weren’t food! I told myself that as I swam as fast as I could back to the shore. It wasn’t until I was safe that I started to appreciate how cool the encounter was. And white tipped reef sharks aren’t known for going for humans.
states it’s the closest he’s ever been to a shark. To be fair let’s just say it’s the closest you have ever SEEN a shark. If you are a surfer , they are watching you when you don’t even know it.
Yeah true, I've heard if a shark attacked a human every time they had an ecounter is would a daily massacre. There's more chance of choking than being eaten by a shark..
Can you imagine having a lovely peaceful swim in the water minding your own business and next thing you know this beast is coming your direction. NOPE.
Roger Clemons I’m not a surfer but they have as much right to public parking and beaches as anyone. If they wake up earlier and get there first, of course they’re going to take the best available spots, just as anyone else looking for parking would do.
It's a hell of thing when you see a shark up close and personal, especially when you know it has the advantage. Certainly gets the old heart rate & adrenalin pumping. I saw one when snorkelling in Gran Canaria about 20 years ago. It was only about 4ft long, a tiddler compared to the one in your video, but still made me swim for the shore and get out of the water :-D
As a surf fisherman I have proof they are just mere yards of the shoreline, often they seem to travel just behind the first breakers. Not great whites though. They are generally farther off shore
I had a tiger sharks fin skim my board while surfing and I was all alone then a jet ski came and circled me. I thought it was a dolphin and the jet ski did to until I got out of the water and then he told me, I guess he didn't want to frighten me so I didn't splash about
Man my heart would've been in my stomach. I know that was the feeling but speed out at the same time. I'm not going to lie I probably would've died going into a body shock just from turning around and seeing a shark behind me
I am fairly new to standup paddleboarding (started in Dec 2020) and you simply can't enjoy the experience of being on the water if you are afraid of what "might" or "could" happen. Don't get me wrong, there are moments when I get into my own head and start looking around my board and wondering, but I force myself to shake it off and stop thinking like that and within moments I am back in a blissful state of mind enjoying the sun on my skin, the fresh salt air in my lungs and the feeling of the cold water rushing over my feet on the board. Nothing quite like it. I did surf as a kid with my older brother at Bolsa Chica and we did see a shark silhouetted in a cresting wave not 30 or so feet offshore as we sat resting on the sand having just come out of the water...Not sure what type of shark it was. I was 13 years old....my big brother who has surfed all over the world didn't seem bothered and his not freaking out about it affected me in the best way. He has his share of shark stories with many happening in Mexico. One in particular event which he told me about and which I still remember clearly was when he and a buddy were surfing at Estero Beach when his friend yelled out, "Look behind you!"...My brother turned to see a dorsal fin which he thought to be about one and a half feet high cutting through the water not 10 feet behind him and following him.....he calmly paddled towards shore and the shark lost interest and swam away. My brother's respectful and calm attitude about sharks or any other ocean predators or dangerous animals was something that rubbed off on me and I appreciate it to this day. He told me once that people who use the term "shark infested waters" might as well also say "people infested cities". They are always present whether we see them or not and I am glad they are. They are magnificent beautiful creatures....all kinds of sharks..
Sharks are just such a damn scary idea. Poor visibility from above water level means your mind is going nuts anticipating shapes. And when you do see a shape, it’s a lucky dip in being a huge monster that will literally eat you

sh4rk b4it There is a lot of hate for sharks, and certainly, they do attack people (I’m an Aussie, and there are several fatal shark attacks here every year, and that’s excluding the many non-fatal), but the reality is, if those sharks wanted to actually eat the people that they bit, then there would be no actual body to recover.

Solitary surfing anywhere along the west coast is crazy
Southern Cali beaches are pretty safe. I swim at Huntington Beach, Newport, and laguna all the time with no incidents.
You make it seem as if it is Florida or Australia which do have a high amount of shark attacks.
Try the Reunion Islands . Getting in the water has been banned .

@@AndrewJamesMcQuinn sharks don't like the taste of humans. Usually they take a single bite, and quickly let go because we taste bad to them.
Granted....a single bite can usually be pretty severe, especially if the shark is big. But, for the most part, sharks will leave humans alone unless A) they feel threatened, B) we accidentally STEP on them (more common than you might think on beaches), or C) they are SEVERELY hungry to the point where even eating something as disgusting tasting to them as a human, is better than starving.

thats probably true in some cases but the thing about great whites and also other shark species is that they will circle around you for some time before they eventually move in closer and closer on you and suddenly they will bump into you for a test bite.

Except the lady that was bit last week, had a baby seal swim around her, why she was bit and not the seal.
Because sharks bite things.
Sonja Ellis ...do juveniles test bite bigger prey for practice?
samiamisme, I guess they could, they test bite with their mouth. But their teeth are not developed till they reach maturity.

Shark: Are you aware your car warranty is about to expire?
It's a hell of thing when you see a shark up close and personal, especially when you know it has the advantage. Certainly gets the old heart rate & adrenalin pumping. I saw one when snorkelling in Gran Canaria about 20 years ago. It was only about 4ft long, a tiddler compared to the one in your video, but still made me swim for the shore and get out of the water :-D
Respect mother nature, she doesn't give a shit about you when you're in her area alone.
Sharks swim 🏊♂️ a lot better than we do
The Benny Hill show theme song would be perfect for when the guy retreated to shore. Especially the fast forward part.
I like how he says @ 58....."Oh F#@k"
i agree ...and ...then he is silent and just starts paddling to get the fuck outta there ...lol
Do you think it might have been your sudden splashing sounds that got the sharks immediate attention?
Probably not the closest you've *ever* been to a shark, just the closest you've ever *seen* one. 😁
As a surf fisherman I have proof they are just mere yards of the shoreline, often they seem to travel just behind the first breakers.
Not great whites though. They are generally farther off shore
Shark: What a great morning to go for a swim and catch a surfer or two
Love the fast forward out of there!
That was normal speed.
😁
lol made mt day Mort
David G Woodward You guys have alot of balls i would be terrified to put my toe in that water..Stay safe

Being surprised by a shark in the ocean is like being surprised by shit in a diaper
I had a tiger sharks fin skim my board while surfing and I was all alone then a jet ski came and circled me. I thought it was a dolphin and the jet ski did to until I got out of the water and then he told me, I guess he didn't want to frighten me so I didn't splash about
You're very lucky. Tiger Sharks are quite aggressive and will eat anything.
Man my heart would've been in my stomach. I know that was the feeling but speed out at the same time. I'm not going to lie I probably would've died going into a body shock just from turning around and seeing a shark behind me
That was the closest you’ve ever been to being shark lunch.😀
He said that's the closest he's ever been to a shark in the water...so he thinks lol
Closest I've ever been to a shark in the water"
That you know of
This is why I prefer surfing with other people. Cause if there's a shark attack there is no need to outswim the shark, just outswim your friend :>
But your friend is faster swimmer then u😂
I bring a knife so that when I see a shark I cut my friiend then paddle for shore.
Welp, I don't have friends soo I'm outta luck soo yea ✌😭
Not sure this is true. I'd say they're more likely to go for the scaredest person making the most commotion?
Baaahaaaaa
I don't go in their ocean, they stay off my lawn.
Ok so you don't surf and yes sharks don't go on land. Thumbs up!! Strange...
+Marciie M *their* smh.
Some can.. Sharknado
apburner1 couldnt have put it any better real shit lol
Quit eating their food and they will not eat you. Or better yet, eat them.
In the water, how far does the sound carry of a person shitting themself?
Gage Westerhouse I bet he pressed a putty or two into the croch of his suit ...
Not so much the sound, but the smell on the other hand....whew! Lol
I think you can see the vibration ripples in the water when he misses that wave and realizes he has to paddle in. 😂
Not nearly as far as a shark can smell it. There's a reason they call poop ''shark sugar''.
M
Just watching this made my heart pound, looking behind him the entire time, waiting. I could never do this.
"THATS why i always carry an extra wet suit..So when i mess my suit i have a clean one
Guy looks the part and gets away like 007
Oh my, I would have freaked out so bad. I love how calmly you seemed to take it!
The shark: Sir, you lost your wallet. Sir ? Sir!!
Poor shark, he was just trying to be nice
Damn you were that far away from shore
I know, Right?? No way on earth I wld be out that far!!!😳
They can grab you in waist deep water
jack smith how?
Right?! And he was alone out there! Stuff that!!
@@sunnyvistabulldogs6869 "stuff that" u white right
Sharks are just such a damn scary idea. Poor visibility from above water level means your mind is going nuts anticipating shapes. And when you do see a shape, it’s a lucky dip in being a huge monster that will literally eat you
I'm getting mixed signals here. 😕 you keep telling me about these cool blood thirsty monsters that add spice to surfing. Yet
... It sounds like you are against 🏄♀️🏄♂️.
@@psychiatristsarecriminals332eh? I’m just trying observing the thought process for anyone in the ocean who has sharks in the back of their mind
That's why I locked myself in my house cellar. I don't pay rent, and don't have to face sharks. 12 years in here.
Same same! ;) Grrrrr.
12 years a slave
hahahaha
Where?
You must just about be out of Red Bull !
You should mount a Go-Pro underneath your board.
it would affect the ride
*twitch
I grew up in Hawaii and this fear never escaped me while surfing. I tried to go to clear water beaches and stay close to other surfers to minimize my chances of getting bit. Scary shit
This is why I snowboard. Surfing without the sharks
That longboard would have been up for sale on Craig's List 10 seconds after I got out of the water if that happened to me.
Why you’re surfing in the home you shouldn’t quit because you get scared
The shark was just trying to catch the wave, he's chillin.
"That's the closest I've ever been to a shark". As far as you know...
Yep
10-4 good buddy remember keep on trucking and keep the rubber side truck driver yes
