25 years ago after my Dad retired to Florida, he took a short term consulting job in St. Louis, MO. The job provided a 2 bedroom furnished corporate apartment for him and Mom. They were by themselves over Christmas so my sister & I packed up our families and traveled to them for Christmas. We slept 6 adults, 4 kiddos and 2 dogs in that apartment for 4 nights - my dad actually made himself a pallet on the floor under the dining table! The kids made coffee filter ornaments that we hung on a faux palm tree in the living room. We hung a strand of colored lights on the balcony railing outside the sliding glass door. My adult kids STILL talk about "that Christmas" and the memories we made that year. It's not the decorations or glitz or gifts that make the season, it's being with the ones we love and sharing the joy and laughter. Laura, if you see this, I think your Mom had a really good thought…’if the kids colored on the floor and not minding a mishap.’ On the subfloor have her family use permanent markers and write blessings, B verses, dreams, draw pictures, prayers, etc. Of course, take pictures to remember. That way when the hardwood floor goes down those words of covering over their home with their family will be set in as long as they have their home. Our church did this at a renovation time before the carpet went down. There were many prayers, joys, and even some tears as they wrote their blessings on the concrete. X still marks the spot where my husband would give our girls hand of marriage one day. Blessings to you all. Merry Christmas.

Hi Laura, I don’t know if they have laid the wood floors in your mom & dad’s addition yet, but when she was talking about not having to worry about the sub-flooring it reminded me of what we did when we built our new home. We gave everyone in our family Sharpies and had them write their favorite Scripture verses wherever they wanted throughout the house on the sub-floor. Then, since they were to be covered, we took pictures of each and noted who wrote them and where. It’s something we will treasure forever. ❤

We had a smaller project at the same time of year and had a Christmas open house even though we had subfloor, doors without handles, and unfinished drywall. When same old same old are strung together year after year it is difficult to form a real good memory of it bc of the repetitiveness.This probably will be a memory for you and the kids. Get some chalk and let the wee ones color on the floors and date it too! When my grands come to visit I paint their hands and make a print on my laundry room walls. They love it, I love it.
I completely believe that, no matter what the “chores” are, it is actually a venue in itself for a chance to have fun together and purpose together! I mean having to do that all alone-if there were just one of you-would be so difficult to physically maneuver and tiring, and not near as fun.

One of most memorable Christmas’s I remember is when our entire downstairs was under construction. All the way down to just studs on the walls and plywood for floors. We had a full house and the best time!

What a beautiful space! Glad to see progress on the renovations. I would suggest eliminating steps altogether (where you have the wooden steps now), if possible, and doing a sloped sidewalk instead. Your elderly selves will thank you in the future. My brother did this for my patio, and it has been so, so nice. Not only do the elderly in our family love this, but it is so useful for rolling things (Green Stalks, wagons, planters, etc.) from the patio down to the garage.
Your mama's house is going to be so beautiful when it is finished. I like how you can look outside the side windows, where your mama is sitting, and can see the potting shed and raised garden beds. You should all sign your names or draw a picture or leave a note on the subfloor. We used to do that on walls or floors and it was so fun forgetting about it and then uncovering it years later during a redecorate or renovation.
We recently had to replace our wood floors and before they were laid I went through each of the rooms and wrote scripture on the subfloor. I had different family members tell me which ones to write down. I felt like it was a blessing from each of them to us and our home. I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas! ❤️😊

You are right about remembering this Christmas in a special way. We had a smaller project at the same time of year and had a Christmas open house even though we had subfloor, doors without handles, and unfinished drywall. We still talk about how nice it was that we did not have to worry about any spills or messes !! It all looks beautiful. Merry CHRISTmas.

I just can't believe how much larger the house looks with just that bit of porch added to the inside square footage. It looks absolutely gorgeous! And yes, this will be a Christmas to remember. This will be the Christmas to remember! We did this when my kids were about 10 and 11 years old and now that they are in their 40s they remember this Christmas as the best Christmas ever.😂

When same old same old are strung together year after year it is difficult to form a real good memory of it bc of the repetitiveness.This probably will be a memory for you and the kids. Get some chalk and let the wee ones color on the floors and date it too! When my grands come to visit I paint their hands and make a print on my laundry room walls. They love it, I love it.

I completely believe that, no matter what the “chores” are, it is actually a venue in itself for a chance to have fun together and purpose together! I mean having to do that all alone-if there were just one of you-would be so difficult to physically maneuver and tiring, and not near as fun.

Decorating this new space is such a moral booster, for sure. Maybe just what your mom and dad need so they can finish strong. Seeing the plywood floors reminds me when we built our house we took sharpies and wrote favorite scripture verses on the subfloor before the hardwood floor was installed.

One of most memorable Christmas’s I remember is when our entire downstairs was under construction. All the way down to just studs on the walls and plywood for floors. We had a full house and the best time!
watching you add plates to the kids car seat reminds me of the days I did that and on the seat and had to use the seat belts to keep that stuff in!!!

What a beautiful space! Glad to see progress on the renovations. I would suggest eliminating steps altogether (where you have the wooden steps now), if possible, and doing a sloped sidewalk instead. Your elderly selves will thank you in the future. My brother did this for my patio, and it has been so, so nice. Not only do the elderly in our family love this, but it is so useful for rolling things (Green Stalks, wagons, planters, etc.) from the patio down to the garage.
Your mama's house is going to be so beautiful when it is finished. I like how you can look outside the side windows, where your mama is sitting, and can see the potting shed and raised garden beds. I come from the age of "make do with what you have" and oh my, what you ladies did here today --- feels very cozy. One thing that catches my heart is the huge tree outside the door, perfect in the middle of the door frame....can only imagine what that will be like in the summer months. You should all sign your names or draw a picture or leave a note on the subfloor. We used to do that on walls or floors and it was so fun forgetting about it and then uncovering it years later during a redecorate or renovation.

We recently had to replace our wood floors and before they were laid I went through each of the rooms and wrote scripture on the subfloor. I had different family members tell me which ones to write down. I felt like it was a blessing from each of them to us and our home. I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas! ❤️😊
