Did you know that when cars are launched in a drag race, their tires get wrinkled? You see, dragsters are some of the fastest accelerating machines globally, producing up to 11,000 horsepower. To put that into perspective, it's more than 12 F1 cars combined. They use specialized soft tires with low air pressure to maximize grip. When they are launched with that immense torque, the tires undergo some serious wrinkling, causing the diameter to shrink by 8 inches. What's even more impressive is that as they pick up speed, their tires actually expand due to centrifugal force

In the 1970s, the tyres were not underinflated. The rear wing was also very low. Thus, at the Christmas tree green light they back bounce all over the place and the cars took off much slower. After under inflating the tyres and making the higher fleet air wing, things got a lot faster.

Incorrect sorry we run very low tire pressure because it allows us more traction on the track especially at launch. The more rubber on the track the more traction. If the tire was Inflated all the way, it would never stick to the track and when you launch, the tires would only spin and you would go nowhere.

As the tires shrink during the launch, it effectively works like reducing the gear ratio by about 20%. As these cars gain speed, centrifugal force causes the tires to increase in size, thereby increasing the gear ratio for better top-end performance at high speed. This means that most top fuel dragsters use a single drive gear and don't require gearboxes.

Side note: the change in diameter also serves as the dragsters "transmission" since the engine is directly connected to the wheels, the car only has one speed*.
However, as the tire diameter shrinks, the final drive changes for better acceleration. As the diameter expands, it increases the car's top speed.
Edit: *I am referring to the NHRA Top Fuel class, slower classes do indeed use regular transmissions.

Just like how a normal transmission starts in a high gear with more torque then in other gears it as faster?

And when rock crawlers, some of the slowest accelerating vehicles in the world, go up on some rocks, the sheer grip and weight from the car or wheels csn cause the tires to wrinkle.
They use special tires that give them lots of grip on steep surfaces, and have very low air pressure to provide more surface area on any terrain.
Also the fancy shmancy rims both these kinds of cars use are called beadlocks. If you look at the rim you can see the bolts. They aren't there for looks, they are there to hold a plate on the inside of the tire that keeps it from falling off the rim at such low pressure.

Three is one exception. The tyres rarely tare themselves up under a lot of force. CVTs fail with enormous frequency. They are so bad that our shop keeps them in stock, especially Nissan and GM. They are so bad that I get a lot of practice replacing them. I cut my time in half from my first week getting cars in for bad CVTs. Toyota makes a different type of CVT thag is as durable as a manual transmission. They are in the Prius. That is why Prius' are used for taxis, fleet cars, rentals, and company cars.

You sir have the correct answer. The tires do two things, 1. They absorb the sudden shock and torque of the drivetrain. 2. They wind up giving the Dragster/Funnuy Car an effectively lower gear ratio, increasing the power to overcome the inertia of the car. Then as the inertia is overcome and the car accelerates, the centripetal force of the spinning tire. Makes the circumference of the tire larger, effectively giving the car a higher gear ratio, and better top end speed.

This helps greatly reduce wheel spin on launch as well as helps keep the wheel from shredding due to the extensive heat and stress from centrifugal force.

It’s because they do burnouts to get the tires sticky. The rubber is sticking to the payment and there’s so much torque so quickly from the immense acceleration that the tires are not spinning as fast as the rim and the axle so the edge of the tire that stuck to the pavement is staying in place while the rim has already begun to spin and that’s why the tires wrinkle like that.

Your correct, the screws or bolts on the rim or bead of the wheel go into the bead of the tire to help prevent the wheel spinning inside of the tire when they launch.
Before I put Bead locks on my 72 Nova drag car, I marked my wheel and tire before each run. After the run on each side my wheel spun in the tire almost 2" from where it was. The bead locks stopped that and hince I ran my 1/4 race faster every 1/10 to 1/100th of a second counts big time in drag racing

Speed is the most exhilarating andrenaline rush for me, but going that fast, feeling comfortable and knowing what your car can do, and being able to control everything is key.
