The inmates have taken over the asylum. This nation was founded by highly educated, intelligent men who valued reason and logic. They conducted a revolution to escape THE OFFICIAL CHURCH OF ENGLAND and thus made a constitution that allowed freedom of religion personally but also dictated that no official religion would be instituted by the government. Freedom of religion and freedom from religion.

Couple of notes here. 1. The revolution was not fought o escape the church of England. There were and are plenty of Anglicans in the US. It was fought to escape the political power and tyranny of England. 2. The establishment clause is only applicable to the federal government, not state or local governments. As a matter of fact, many of the colonies were separated on largely religious means, some being predominantly Catholic, some Quakers, some Baptist. Many of these colonies, upon winning freedom from the crown and achieving statehood, instituted religious tests, aligning with the predominant religious beliefs for that state, that must be passed in order to attain public office.

Yes. It's the darkest aspects of the Crusades, all over again. Not to mention, very stark examples of other well-known organizations that tried to repeat their own version of it. Forced indoctrination to a religion will never work. It'll always, as history should have taught us, has the opposite effect. There is a difference between properly inviting people to the faith, and tyranny. It seems, some still can't discern the difference.
That's why there are so many different Christian denominations. They all interpret the bible differently depending where they stand on the evolutionary scale. Then what bible are they all using. There are various translations available now. If there are Hindu students, Buddhist students, Jewish students, Muslim students they all should bring their scriptures to class and demand to be taught from them as well.
May I suggest that teachers be required to teach from the founding documents, the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Federalist Papers, Common Sense by Thomas Paine, etc.
I live in Oklahoma, and I'm a Christian. Ryan Walters needs to go. The Bible should not be taught in public schools because there are many different sects of Christianity not to mention completely different religions.
I'm just picturing what the average science teacher will do when forced to reference the Bible in their classes. It isn't going to be pretty. As a Christian I retired in Oklahoma after life and career in New Jersey. But I haven't felt welcome in a Christian Church in the past 5 years here! When a Christian minister talk to Christ's teachings, the congregation said Jesus was too liberal! They didn't want the woke stuff of peace love and understanding!
In his book The Kingdom, The Power and The Glory, Tim Alberta relates a similar situation in a church. Fortunately, in my experience, it is the exception and not the rule. So far.
Oklahoman here, and he’s been doing this for a while. He’s definitely grandstanding but he’s been doing this since before the Louisiana Ten Commandments stunt. As a Dem living in this state, it is very difficult. I feel oppressed by the views of other Christians in my state. I’ve been a Christian my entire life here in Oklahoma and I’ve never tried to beat others over their heads with my Bible or the scriptures within. However there are those in power in our state that are choosing to do this and it’s despicable.
Honestly, more Christians need to speak out about the damage that is done _to_ Christianity by trying to shove it into schools. Separation of church & state is _just as much_ for the Faith's benefit as it is for the government.
@c.b.- the misunderstanding of the separation of church and state has been the greatest weapon that Satan ever managed to form. Second only to Roe vs Wade.
When I was a child I went to church with my paternal grandmother and my maternal aunt. Both were Pentecostal holiness, but their churches were very different. When I was 13 I decided to go to a baptist church where some of my friends went around the block from where I lived. My grandmother hit the roof and told me I would burn in the fires of hell if I went to the Baptist church. I live in the southern US. I don’t think my grandmother would be happy with any bible teaching unless it was here version and I will say my grandmother had a very warped sense of religion. She would pray with such zeal for the death and destruction of people that she did not agree with or was angry with. She and the deacons in the Baptist church I went to are the major reason I don’t attend church. I believe in God and Jesus and I pray to them, but I don’t do it in a church. If you ram craziness down a person’s throat enough, they want nothing to do with it.
yep, you are right. death and destruction is not what God had in mind, IMHO. Love, forgiveness (sometimes difficult!) on the other hand? That's worth seeking. I also gave up on the church because of similar things and many tries, but I NEVER gave up on God. And he never gave up on me. This site, this rev? I can handle, and it is now my church. My faith? Strong as ever. Maybe even more, now I am on my own.

Rev Ed Trevors, as an atheist living in Oklahoma, with a child in public schools,…I have to say THANK YOU for being a voice of reason! I absolutely understand and support what you’ve said here. THANK YOU!!
I find it refreshing how you, as a Christian priest, know when Christianity is actually being used as a weapon, by the Right, in schools, and this is not acceptable for true Christianity, like the Christianity you teach in YOUR Church. It is not to be forced, but to be taken on board by those that believe.
It’s not being used by the right, it’s being used by the 2nd beast of revelation. Irony. The Bible being used to bring on the prophecies written in the Bible.
@hollyf.7846 I would teach science. I would go over the Scopes trial. THEN!!! I WOULD TEACH EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY. YEAH, BUDDY. Oh, I would not mind putting a list of Beatitudes on the wall....see, how THAT goes.
If "Conservatives" followed Jesus then I'd be less concerned; but with their words and deeds they often oppose what Jesus told us. They treat Jesus as a get out of hell free card.
Jesus IS a get out of hell free card, but the challenge is we need to follow Jesus to get the card. Maybe they should put into practice what Jesus taught.
@libbycollins9349 Jesus tells us exactly what we need to do. I agree with you. The reason I use the word "free" is people seem to have been missed by themselves or others to think they can just claim to be a Christian as they march off in the opposite direction. I don't blame most who are thinking this, because our culture has promoted this way if thinking. That makes it so important for those of us who understand to try to help point out the misunderstanding. That includes the fact I need to be reminded when I stumble. (Conveniently, I have a wife who helps keep me in check.)
Please don't give them any ideas. There are too many as it is who seem to think that man sits on the right hand of God, enjoys God's special favor, and who was "the best president the United States ever had." I'm sure quite a few of them would approve of a Trump Edition. They already think his presence in the political arena is divinely inspired.
@@marshalinn5577 That it is. These folks believe Buddhism (& anything that isn't their Christian Nationalist version of religion) is Satanic, so that won't be acceptable to them. There will probably be a whole dogmatic curriculum they will create that teaches Jesus himself was Christopher Columbus's co-pilot on the Santa Maria & raised the Stars & Stripes flag on the beach of the New World claiming it for God. The Reverend is correct this is gonna get messy & SCOTUS in its current form will support this obscenity.
Isn't it funny how the people who scream the loudest about "government overreach" are willing to let something like this happen, just because it currently aligns with their desire to dominate others? These things always backfire and, when they do, the people who cheered them on are then the most vocal critics.
"We knew that we needed to include the Bible directly into the classroom so that kids understood the full historical context of its role in American history," said Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters Oh what fun and mischief can be had following the Superintendent's instructions. Especially when one highlights verses from the Old Testament. Take the Ten Commandments for example. What an interesting lesson we could have when explaining things like adultery and slavery to 1st Graders. An old saying comes to mind: "Be careful what you wish for."
Every time I stumble upon one of your videos I think the same. If my government ever forced me, an atheist, to go to church I would try to find a church with a Reverend just like you.
Loved this! Back in the 70s we had a Bible club, but it was after school was out, where we disused the Bible it wasn't mandatory it was out of you wanting to know more. When you force it you will have less believers
Not if you start indoctrinating the very young children. You have to carefully close their minds and tell them they are not supposed to doubt. It switched off critical thinking.
I know right, just ask the muslims and confusianist. A couple billion cant be wrong! You are in the freest country in the world. Nobody is forcing you into anything!
Love that “Hold my beer” was tossed in early. High school I graduated from in Tennessee many years ago had trained teachers for math, English, science, etc. but history and sex ed were taught by coaches - those classes were hilariously bad. Heads could explode.
Way back in my youth, I had parents. Normal folks. No way would they ever permit another taking charge of, or being involved with, my religious exposure. Calm and quiet people.
A priest told a Jewish friend of mine who was serving as best man at a wedding to just silently mouth the word “watermelon” repeatedly while the congregation recited the profession of faith. Visually, couldn’t tell the difference.
I was brought up to believe that it isn’t required to pray out loud for God to hear your prayers. I never understood the big deal about praying in school because if what I was taught is true you can pray anytime or anywhere.
As if teachers don't have on their plate as it is! Politicians need to stay in their lane!! Stay out of religious and medical decisions and take care of the people that voted you in to make their lives better not worse.
I guess the teachers will fit in the Bible teaching between the academic requirements and the shooter drills. As a woman of faith, I don’t want a teacher to spend time on the Bible because that needs to be taught in the home and at your selected House of Worship according to your beliefs. Separation of Church and State is one of the foundations of our democracy.
Thanks for your thoughts. I live in Oklahoma. Ryan Walters is beholden to those who want to destroy the public school system, among other things. It's been building down for years. Part of the plan is stuff like this and "Parental Choice" : Every parent should be given money to home school or send their children to a private school. Currently one has to apply for The Parental Choice Tax Credit program which has reached the $150 million limit for 2024. There may also the religious charter school route that will be run up to the SCOTUS. Eventually there will be less to no money left for true public schools. It is mind boggling what goes on & how many people vote, if they vote at all, against their own best interests. Ryan Walters won the State Superintendent's office by 57%. He took his win as a mandate. In 2022, Walters ran on a platform of fighting "woke ideology," banning books from school libraries, getting rid of "radical leftists", “liberal indoctrination,” critical race theory, critical thinking, transgender identities and diversity, equity & inclusion in general. He's only doing what the people want him to get done. He will probably be the next governor. Twice as many registered Repubs as Dems here & with straight party voting ballots you only have to make one check. This is a land of "Ignorance is bliss" & the people want to keep it that way... easier to force feed all the lies & misinformation, to follow, to be ruled. I used to say God help us. Now I don't know where any God is in all of this especially the state's Christian Nationalist one. Now, I pray to find a way, a place that is not here. I don't feel that I'm isolated, or alone. There just are not enough of us left to make a difference. Did not mean to launch into these many words. I wrote them; they're staying. I hate typing & writing. thanks for reading to this point.

From an agnostic raised in the Christian church who still finds comfort there, thank you. The teachings of faith belong in the houses of faith where welcoming concepts can be imagined and shared with those who find comfort in them. The government is a place for all people of all faiths. It is where policies and laws are crafted for the better of the many and their differences of culture, self, and mind. When the church controlled the crown across Western Europe during the dark ages, we did not have peace and prosperity. We had countries at perpetual war over minor differences in scripture, large scale poverty, low quality of life, the loss of knowledge. Faith is not a bad thing if it is treated like faith. When people start to pretend faith is knowledge, reason loses out.
As a Pastor I've prayed for "end life" patients that have actually told me as Baptists, "not to allow them transfered to Methodist hospital" or vice versa. Regardless of having NKJV in hand, some at deaths door requested not to be at Catholic hospital or vice versa. This is gonna be nuts.
Separation of church and state is a fundamental Baptist distinctive. Many Baptists would go to court if ordered to teach the Bible from a Baptist point of view, too.

*Fun fact about American history regarding Bibles in schools:* In the 1800s conflicts over which version of the Bible to teach in schools and which prayers were to be said were common. In 1844 there were several bloody riots in Philadelphia over the issue, because Catholics were against using the King James version the Protestants tended to favour. Similar riots also took place in Boston and other parts of New England in the 1850s. Basically, people tend to think that separation of church and state exists to protect minority religions and atheists. In truth, it's there to protect _everyone,_ because only the denomination in power isn't oppressed and the fight for dominance causes violence that affects us all.
I want to see the chemistry teacher talking about acid base chemistry referencing the mythology of Bronze Age goat herders or even Roman Empire provincials. How are they going to illuminate the Lowry Bronstead definition?
Is it too far to suggest that there are as many theological lenses as there are believers in Christianity, since EACH of us understands the massiveness of Scripture through our own personal mindsets? Your mention of a hell of their own making is spot on here. God bless their little hearts...
If they're bound and determined to jam the Bible into the classroom, teach it as part of a literature course. I took such a course when I was in high school. It was a six-week elective "mini-course" through the English department. I enjoyed it, and thought it was a good way for a non-Christian like me to begin to learn about the book. But I agree with you, Rev - what they're trying to do is going to be a disaster, one way or another. Thanks for another excellent perspective.

A clear violation of an individual, this being the teacher's, first amendment right to be free from religion and not to be compelled by a government to speak about a religion.
The teacher's might be compelled to talk about it, but there is nothing in the laws saying they have to be any good at doing so. I'm wondering what the malicious compliance is going to look like.

According to NPR, the person who put this into action has (somewhat) clarified how the law should be put into effect. It's supposed to be used in literature and history classes only and from grades 5-12, with the purpose of showing how Christianity has influenced great literature, and American history and culture.

From an agnostic raised in the Christian church who still finds comfort there, thank you. The teachings of faith belong in the houses of faith where welcoming concepts can be imagined and shared with those who find comfort in them. The government is a place for all people of all faiths. When the church controlled the crown across Western Europe during the dark ages, we did not have peace and prosperity. We had countries at perpetual war over minor differences in scripture, large scale poverty, low quality of life, the loss of knowledge.

It's supposed to be used in literature and history classes only and from grades 5-12, with the purpose of showing how Christianity has influenced great literature, and American history and culture. My first question was the same as yours, from which Bible will they teach? How about teaching from the Jefferson Bible. Old Thomas Jefferson was noted for ripping up his Bible and removing passages he didn't like.
Thank you Rev Ed agree with you
Rev Ed thanks for sharing this , Church and State separated is what America has done since the founding..This is a kaos and a big problem is Teachers are going to interpret the Bible the way they see it.. Also theres different versions of the Bible, for Example Catholics can't use the King James version..Its also Public school there is diversity theres Jewish with the Torah , Budda and agnostic etc.. Thanks for this important Rant..God Bless 🕊️
I would love to know how teachers explain to their students who are less than 10 years old what adultery is and how and why it happens !!!!
Oklahoma, my kids live in Oklahoma, very concerned about this. I am so very glad my grandson will be graduating from high school next year. I'm sad it has gotten this far.
😢 sadly, he/they do NOT deserve ANY respect.
