What do I really need to say about this car? Not much. I think most people already know what a monster it is. Probably one of the most, or THE most iconic American muscle cars. Of course, it's a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS454 450 horsepower LS6. With that 450 horsepower you get just a lowly 500 lb-ft of torque (yes, I'm joking). These cars just had it all. Power, style, and they were great drivers. That's probably why they sell for such ridiculous prices. The LS6 equipped vehicles weren't overly rare, you can always find a few for sale at any given time, but when it comes to auctions people go crazy for them. If the new owner wants to give it to me I'll gladly take it.

What do you guys think about this LS6? Would you have paid that much?
70 SS chevelle ls6 is worth the money especially if it's original. It's a collector's item.
“Collector” is all relative and changes with time. These cars are already starting to drop in value. When I was a kid Model As were collectors and 30-40k each... now, not even half that.
I was going to say 90-100k
I was thinking around 100K but I would want more documentation it's a TRUE LS6 first... Unfortunately for Chevy Fans it's harder to prove its original unlike Mopars and Ford's..
@@RoadRunnergarage8570 - especially for the 1969+ cars
GM and their Chevies were THE CAR back in the day when I was a teen in the '60s!
My Favorite Chevelle,
The True Man Made Tiger,
The 70 Chevelle SS was a manufacturing masterpiece. Everything about the car is utter perfection.
No mystery my friend... insurance squelched advertising for the king of Muscle... 💪
Yeah, probably. Just crazy how insurance dictated everything by that era
Yep.. That's why my dad had to sell his 68 383 Road Runner only year after he bought it...
@@CarsAndZebras My wife works for State Farm... lol... so I hear all about how they run their business... 😁
@@gearmeister
They must love these new hellcats and mustangs and vettes with 700hp out the door.
Could ya imagine the insurance on that if it was available back in the day?
@@MrTheHillfolk Yes... but insurance companies look at today's situation as an up-selling opportunity.... but so do funeral homes, police & casket makers.... 😂😂😂😂💪
Nice car
Definitely nice
It is a beautiful car
In 1970 the minimum wage was about $1.50 an hour. $3,000 was a lot of money back then!
People always throw stupid money around at Mecum and Barrett.
I would too if I had it like that, unfortunately I'm on a budget. So I do alot of work myself on my muscle car.😆 it's all good though
Actually I think you are correct. I seen some things on the car that were not correct however if they were, I could imagine it would have sold more for the 100K or more price. It was my first car I owned and as time passed really everyone wanted the convertible and that car correct LS6 would be way, way more.
I’d definitely rather do a little work on a car than pay 85K for that one. It’s nice, but at that price I’d rather get an LS5. There was actually super nice ‘70 LS5 that went for $37,000 at Kissimmee
@@CarsAndZebras yup! I'd be happy with a Ls5 as well.😆
And you wonder why 99% of Barrett Jackson cars don't have a reserve on them??... People like the prestige of saying... " I bought it at Barrett Jackson.."..
The title on my LS 5 weight is 4100 lbs . I call it Heavy Metal
I might have missed it in.the auction they didn't mention the compression ratio that had to use race gas
Kinda like Chevrolet never advertised the SS!
The highest rates HP Engine in the late 60s/early 70s Muscle Car era...
Not true, there were cars with 580hp.
i prefer the buick GS stage 1
My ex father in law has the same ss chevelle ls6 he bought new in 1970 ! Unmolested and in next to excellent condition unmolested with just over 9000 miles!!!!!! 410 posi 4sp black with black vinyl roof and white racing stripes.
I’d be curious to see what that would sell for. 1 owner original car...pretty crazy
@@CarsAndZebras he was offered 180,000 2 years ago from a guy at a car show, n turned it down obviously. Rumor has it my daughter will get it if or when he passes. The car has never had a repaint! And in very good to excellent condition. Has asmall dinger here n there but crazy in great shape. Thanks for the reply! Love your channel!!! A lil more on the story, he originally bought the 396 but about 3 months after the fact someone stole it from out in front of the house. So with the insurance money and his graduation money he pulled the plug on the ls6!!! Again this car is all original. 1 owner car with just over 9000 miles whish is going up since getting older, in his late 70s he enjoys driving it to local car shows.
@@paulcondie2520 - worth way more with those dings, than if he repainted it. I’d be scared to drive it as this point!
@@CarsAndZebras absolutely! He is at the age he is enjoying it and just drives it to local car shows. Saved it long enough! Lol
Sure he does 👌
I own my grandfathers 1970 Chevelle SS
454
Black/Black
4 speed manual
Insane.
How much could I get for it?
It had a frame off restoration that n 2004.
It dose not need race gas. 93 with run fine.
This could be an original LS6 with a date coded replacement engine....
Hard to tell without a good paper trail..
Most important fact is having the Built sheet ! If not don’t touch it.
I believe the carburetor was a Holley 780, not an 800. Semantics........
You are correct, sir.....you beat me to it LOL
The LS6 was more or less identical to an L78, but with more cubes
@@jasonshawver7227 The L78 Chevelles were no slouches. Another underrated motor by a good 25 HP.
💥 My High School Years 69 - 72 Muscle Car Era ✅ As Well As Motorcycles… What a Great Time 💥
I would have paid $100K because it is almost just like the one I owned from 1983-1989 except mine was an automatic. Sentimental value I want it back
Cool rap concert but where is the beat
A retired engineer at GM said that they lost 800 bucks on every LS6 that was built!
Maybe that’s why it wasn’t advertised, stupid business decision, raise the price, if your losing your not running your business right, unless your Costco chicken.
Compared to what some new cars sell for the price doesn't seem excessive. A 454 with a 6500 redline is damn impressive. With 331 gears this car has a pretty high top speed. CHP 440s may have had a problem catching these.
I agree!
Yes, I’d pay maybe.....2 reasons:
1) I liked the comment you made regarding a comparison to prices for modern cars. We don’t look at people being crazy for spending $80-$90k (or more) for loaded Tahoe’s or Escalades (I don’t think twice when I see one in the neighborhood)......or Hellcat Redeyes, Demons, z06/zr1 vettes, etc. Right?
2) And the most important reason-economics being the cost of a great restoration (depending on how good/complete the car was to start). Example-I’m in the process of restoring a 63 split window. I’ve already collected over $20k in parts, will have $20 to START in body/paint (who knows what more when the car is taken down, I know it was hit in the left front at least once), and then perhaps $10k or more in drivetrain rebuild. And that’s neglecting the original price of the car, and the fact I pulled the body off and stripped the chassis myself, and am rebuilding the rolling chassis myself. All it is is math.....
As another example of the math.....I was told by my restoration shop, granted being a high end NCRS well known shop......if I were to just drop a car off with them, typically Reston START at $80k and go from there.....
My dad said that one of the fastest cars on the street back in 1970 was a Chevelle SS LS6. He said it finally took a guy who had a gutted out 55 Chevy with a Corvette 427 in it to finally beat it one night!
I feel like that was just a little high for a car without the original engine. There's quite a range for the LS6 cars, numbers matching still seem to reach 100K, but you don't really see the 150K+ numbers any more.
True... muscle car era definitely dying a little. But that’s what happens when all the cars get bought and hoarded.
Unless it's a convertible...
@@RoadRunnergarage8570 - That's true. At Kissimmee they had a numbers matching convertible that was diamond rated that hit 230K... and still didn't get the reserve.
It’s just money
Thx for the Post. I owned and restored a ‘70 SS 454, (‘87-‘95). The Build Sheet showed a 12/12/69 build date. Not until I tried to sell it did I understand all of the incorrect parts mine had. Wrong Brake Booster, replacement hood and incorrect wiper motor. I was later vindicated on the Single Fuel Line to the Fuel Pump. Even the early build date was argued. Regardless, I invested $44,500 over the 7 years I owned it, only driving it 75 miles after completion. Baby #2 wad on her way, which was the only reason it did get completed, meeting one person at Carlisle who purchased it 2 weeks later for $30,800.
My understanding was that the LS6 was offered after the Brochures were printed or “during” the production year.
I also made the mistake of installing “SS” emblems on the Door Panels. Turns out the “Malibu” was legit.
Lastly, I mailed a Camera down to Ausleys Chevelle Parts in Greensboro, NC.
They were kind enough to take photos of their two low mileage LS-6 Cars, then mailed them back. At the time, the Gobi Beige example had 5038 miles and the Cranberry Red had approximately 4600.
COWL GRILLES NEVER CAME ON ANY 70 CHEVELLE and seeing them installed on today’s “Restored” Cars sickens me, lol!
I said 85!
Chevelle's are sweet and 70 is also my favorite year as well, but they're not the king of muscle and Mopars almost always bring the most at high-end auctions. Speaking of auctions, we will be going to the Scottsdale Barrett-Jackson this weekend and should be another great showing as we attend every year and is always a blast
Never been to Barrett. Crazy thing is the hemi cars are even dropping in value.
@@CarsAndZebras yeah it's auction central around here this time of year, and Bonhams as well as Russo & Steele are also running theirs this week. Along with 5 or 6 other smaller ones that are mostly exotics and high-end 1 million + auctions, but we just go to the B-J and is so massive that it's enough for us. Mecum's was here for the first time last yr, but they do theirs in March separate from the others at Cardinals stadium in Glendale. The car scene here is incredible, and there's hot machines everywhere during the winter months. Yeah the market always fluctuates, and is up & down all across the board
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
My uncle owns a 1970 Chevelle SS 454 (LS6) with the 4 speed, he and my other uncle found it in a field in Kentucky, it is in immaculate condition and the car only has 60k original miles on the clock
I have a friend w/a 1970 442 w30 4sp power windows ac vert, & whilst the Chevelle is very nice, I'd take the Olds 1st in a heartbeat. Likely cheaper.
I like Olds, almost bought a ‘69 442 a few weeks back but they wouldn’t drop the price enough
The Olds rears were weak compared the the Chevys!
No mention of the L78 396 which was also available for the 1970 Chevelle 396SS.
The L78 396 had more horsepower (375 hp) than the LS5 454 (360 hp).
LS6s are typically 6 figure cars....you can double that or more for a convertible...
About the same $ neighborhood as Hemi Mopars or Cobra Jet Ford's...
185,000
Great video I dont know the answer but I do know the brake job on my BMW adjusting for inflation would have cost $25,000 in 1970..
OMG, I absolutely feel your pain, (good comedy comes from it)!

Iconic Car. Why Chevy went to two headlights I in 71 I’ll never know and those round tail lights
I think in the last Barrett-Jackson Auction 2 went for over $200,00 and one was a 396
Hi Cars & Zebra
In my opinion $ 15,000 too much.
Rather Oldsmobile 442 W30 or W31 with a 4 speed & W 27 diff.
LS6 too overrated in my opinion.
Your number 1 Fan in Australia
Louis Kats from Melbourne Australia ☺ 👍
The LS6 was actually 850hp, GM under rated it so 18 year old guys could afford insurance...That's what the guy down road named Fred says. Factory 1/4 mile would be 9,9 at 150 on donut tires
I don’t know, some people on these videos posted the LS6 was actually around 1000 horsepower stock with a 9-flat ET. Has to be true.
Come on that was not 1000hp ,,,, ggggg guys its 1000 fps of toque and 1255 horsepower.
Most were dynoed at just over 500 HP......some maybe closer to 600. I can't see 850 or 1000. Still.....what a beast of an engine. No match back then. Not even a 426 hemi. Love Chevrolet!
@@thecorsair1945 man, I watched a real 454LS engine on a dyno it was no where close to 500. It was 438hp so actually overrated. Super chevy mag did same test and came no where near 450-500
I would take the L78 over the LS6. But it must have a 4-spd, the ZL2 and the U14 gauge pkg.
Actually , the L78 option on the 70 SS is rarer then the LS6 as the L78 was discontinued as the 454 options were made available. That left the L34 / LS5 /LS6 after mid year.
Wow and the zl1 corvette was $8500, you could get 2 of these for that 1 corvette.
That is one I i would luv to own blue too
Looks like my old car
Damn that it's probably really expensive high in angel but I am subscribed first of all do love Chevelles for first start and thank you for doing a video of this okay thank you so I'm good right I'm subscribed
Luv it how much
It was about the insurance
$ 135;000 + would be my guess.
They sell around 100k in europe and not even this nice... But in Europe they are more rare.
That's because the majority of sales where slow boats and granny grocery getters, they go for the L.c.d.
Boy they tried wringing every buck they could've lol,and it went for exactly what I picked.
Give me a Hemi any day!!!!
u know this has no l.s. engine in it this has a bbc in it l.s. 6 454 was a small block and they also made a l.s. 7 427 small block in this car
Regarding the LS6 not being listed in the brochures, could be one of two reasons (if not both):
1) if I recall correctly, the LS6 was a mid year introduction, along with a mid year cancellation of the L78 396. Perhaps the sales info was published before the LS6s official introduction.
2) GM was the last company to still abide by the 1957 AMA racing ban (except for “wink wink” special projects going out the back door. Perhaps upper management didn’t want to publicize packages like this too much (similar example being the L88 corvettes being rated at “only” 430hp versus an L71 tripower at 435? Come on.....a 427 with 12.5 compression, nasty cam not making more than 1hp/CI? And by the way, L88s had no radio or heater? They knew they were selling race cars, but management didn’t want to know it)
My vote is reason 1
Correct me if I’m wrong on any of this.....
Must be nice to be able to overpay for something that you could have bought for much less.
Car has to be pushed, I would not pay that with it not running.
They almost always push the cars at auctions. Firing it up just to move a few feet puts unnecessary moisture in the exhaust system. They usually push the primo cars.
@@thecorsair1945 thanks Corsair, I was joking but I’m glad I was now I know why they push them, it makes sense, learn at least 1 thing new everyday, and you just taught me, thank you sir.
They also push them because there is a legal amount of exhaust that can be in side the auction area
