In a village 2500m high in the Indian Himalayas, life is changing. Many of the younger generation seek to chart a new course, different from those of their parents. This is one man's story of juggling responsibilities and fighting for dreams, both for himself and for his community.

This short documentary is part of a research project on education, unemployment and social change in South Asia, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. Social geographer Dr Jane Dyson is based at the University of Oxford and has worked in the village in Uttarakhand since 2003.

More than anything else, I hope their school is now an intermediate school. I truly hope their lives are a bit less harsh. My hope is they are happy.

Thanks for this. This is the exact childhood of my parents. I am talking about 80s, both my parents tell me stories about their lives. Like, how hard it was to go school on foot 12 kms every single day. There was no road, and just a few years back road construction happened till my village. Life is now better there, I went last year to see my village.
Luckily dad moved to Meerut (U.P) before Uttarakhand was separated from U.P. I was born in the city and got the best education. I do visit my village annually, I wish I could do something for them.

Excellent video!Though it should be noted that Uttrakhand is one of the wealthiest States in India(per capita income) much higher than the national average).List_of_Indian_states_and_union_territories_by_GDP_per_capita.i am not denying the lack industries and job opportunities,but other states have it much worse.For example,in UP,for a couple hundred vacancies for class D government jobs,more than 1.7 million people applied,some of them were even PhD, master's holders!so it's not a special case,India as a whole has it much worse!A lot revenue is generated in Uttrakhand through tourism but is not being used properly.
