I like to imagine the game designers coming up with more and more elaborate ways to resolve a tie, before just saying "screw it" and letting both players win.
Ive been playing the PnP version a few months now and had no idea the galaxy used a colony action die to level up... This is why I love your videos.. you set me straight on some of the rules... great work as always!!
Loving the game! You should really do a solo play tutorial. I've watched all of the ones on RUclips and they're all incorrect. Regaurdless, great video! Thanks.
You did a great job of explaining things and keeping things simple. I just got into board games and prefer solitaire/lowplayer game nights. It helps a lot being mainly an auditory learner. Cheers
I have the Ultra Tiny Epic version. Watching this video reminded me about the amount of dice to roll depending on Empire level and about immediately utilizing the planet ability when you land on a planet. I was playing wrong but no more. Thanks Rodney!
Saw this today in our local and thought it looked interesting, going to grab it off the back of this. Thanks! I also got summoner wars after seeing a video you were on, we are new to gaming so thanks for the help so far! bmb
I just discovered tiny epic games (I’m always behind) and loving them! But I’m only here to comment on the fact that I see Rodney responded to every single comment. Rodney is what is right in the world. And I’m here at the very end of 2021 where “right” things seem to be going extinct. More people need to be like Rodney.
Great video. Got first play in tonight (non Solo) and looks like I was doing one rule wrong. I kind of read the rule on moving ships to mean you could only move ships that are on the surface of a planet or on your galaxy mat. Didn't read it as you could move ships in orbit around a planet also. Oh well I guess that's what we have you for. Great work as always.
Just got my Kickstarter version in the mail last week! Going to be teaching it soon and I always go to Watch It Played to learn how :D Great video as always Rodney.
Thank you, this video clarified a couple of points I missed after reading the rules. Currently playing this on TableTop Simulator. I Picked it up for just £2 on Steam. I also backed Tiny Epic Pirates and have being playing the print & play version. Very much looking forward to the Backer reward version due in March 2021
Thanks for all your videos, I was so sad to see you didn't have one for Tiny Epic Crimes. If you get the game could you do a how to play for it? It's much needed! Thank you!
Incredibly clear and wonderfully paced (so many are rushed or too accommodating for time). My only remaining question is can playing solo too often make me go blind? My grandmother was always sure it would.
+Watch It Played I have played it last Sunday with my brother and my son. It's really a tiny epic game! Very strategic and funny! I recommend it to everybody. :D
The game just recently got released here in my country and my lgs received just one box. As it was on my wishlist for a while now, I grabbed it earlier today. Very excited to try it it out with the GF tomorrow.
Thanks for the review. Question about following for you. Do you do the same thing as the current player? For example: the current player activates a move ship die and moved a ship into orbit on planet 2. If I follow do I need to move to the same spot or can I move anywhere (as movement rules allow). Case 2: Current player activates the utilize colony die and uses a colonies abilty. If following do you get the same colony ability they used or one of your own?
i play games of dice such as Yatzee, Farkel, woupd this be a good one? or what would you recommend.. mainly i play with a group of2- 4, all older folks. 60+ and also can be solo played.
Sorry, but on this channel I avoid reviewing or giving opinions on games. I prefer to show you as much detail about the game as possible, to help you make a decision about whether or not it seems like something that would appeal to your particular taste in games.
Great video! I have a couple questions.. Once you land on a planet's surface, do you have to play a utilize colony die to use the action of the planet? Can you continue to use the action of the planet until it is conquered as long as you have a ship on the surface?
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
wenchwogg My thoughts exactly. I have always felt I talked myself into backing this and it would immediately be eligible for trade. Then I got the email from the creator about Rodney's video and now I'm a lot more comfortable with having backed it. It looks like a really tight and high quality game. It's gone from an afterthought to something to look forward to playing.
Thank you, Rodney, for your great review. Today I received my Kickstarter copy and had to test it right away :-) I played it once and ended with many questions - especially regarding the "Following" function - I hope you can help ... (1) If I follow another player doing the "advance Colonization" action (Diplomacy or Economy) , can I follow him and finalize the colonization during his/her turn? (2) If I follow another player doing the "Utilize a colony" action, may I even use the actions of my colonized planet? (3) If I follow the "move a ship" action and land on a planet, may I use the planet-specific action (for which I also may pay energy or culture resources)? ... this can end up in several action which I could do during another players turn - is this allowed? (4) one last question - probably an easy one: I can use the Planet specific actions when I land on it - but not when I am already on that planet at the start of my next turn? Despite these open question I like the gameplay and look&feel - it's a great value for the money and perfect for holidays due to its small size. Thank you in advance for your answer !
+Thomas Froese 1-A - Yes. 1-B - If an opponent has used Advance Colonization, following would let you Advance Colonization only. Using a colonized planets ability happens when you use (or follow) the "Utilize a Colony" action, which is a different side of the die. 2 - Yes, but when you say it could end up allowing you to do several actions, yes, if that is the planets ability, that you went to. 3 - Correct, you only get the ability when you first land on the planet, not simply for being there later. I hope that helps!
+Watch It Played Thank you, Rodney, for your lightning-fast reply. In fact you were so quick, that you haven't seen my correction about bullet point 1-B. ;-) There I messed up "Advance Colonization" with "Utilize a colony". But I now understand, that the following action is a very mighty tool to change the outcome of the game - as long as you have enough culture to use it. Thank you so much! Thomas
I have a doubt: let's say I land on a planet surface in my first turn, I then activate(or not) the planet's ability and let my ship on that plante's surface and end my turn, in my next turn, can I immediately utilize that planet's action? Or do I have to use 2 move actions to move my ship that is landed on it's surface to another place and then land another ship there again to reuse that planet's action?? Awesome tutorial BTW!
You get to do the planet's action, only after a move action, and when you move a ship, it must always go to a new planet. So you couldn't keep the ship in place and use a move action to get the ability again. You'd have to leave and come back to it later. Hope that helps!
I have a question: When following, I know I can only follow once per die. But let's say the player uses two dice of energy. Could I follow both? Great video by the way!
Question: The converted dice aren't spent, are they? The way you described it made it sound like you could use two dice to change a dice face, and then use those same two dice to perform actions. Like, say, using two Moves to change a die to Diplomacy, which I then use to completely colonize a planet. Now that I have a ship back in my home galaxy, I use one of the moves I put on the converter to then move that same ship to a new card.
PoisonClaw4 The converted dice are spent. The dice you use to change another die, can't be used for anything else. It might help to think of it this way: if the dice used to convert could also be used for their action, then the rule would be "During your turn, as long as you have at least 3 dice in play, just change one to any side you want" :)
Worker placement games are always a good time. This one looks good too. Is there any way for me to tell which games you guys will be playing on the channel, or which are just the instructional videos?
archer111000 Not really. It's very dependent on my schedule, so I tend to not announce that, unless I know for certain. I hope to do a play through of this one.
Question: Lets say you have 2 ships that are both colonizing planets that require diplomacy dice to advance on the track. When activating a diplomacy die do both ships advance, or does only one ship advance?
I don't know if I'm getting this rule confused. As I see no one else doing this in their play throughs or being brought up on any of the boardgamegeek rule sections. So I'm not sure if others are missing this line item or if I'm miss reading this. I know you can only have one of your own ships on the planet's orbit or the planet's surface at the same time. You can never have more than one of your own ships on the surface or orbit for that one planet at the same time. However the rule book also says this, "You can only have one ship on each colony track". I'm taking this as, I can't have a ship on two separate different planets orbits that are both on the same track of either Diplomacy or Economy. I can have ship on a planet orbit of Diplomacy or Economy at the same time, but I can never be on the track of two Diplomacy or two Economy even though they're different planets at the same time. This would then would go against what you suggested above. I appreciate you taking the time to respond Rodney and Happy International TableTop Day 2017!
When it says "You can only have one ship on each colony track", it just means that on a single planet, you can't have two of your ships on that exact same colony track. Hope that helps.
Hi Rodney this helps! I guess I was just reading too much into it. I knew you couldn't have more than one ship orbiting the planet at the same time, but hearing the colony track made me read too much into it. Thanks for taking time to respond! Keep up the great work!
Haven't played any of the Tiny Epic series, would you recommend this over the others? This really has some shades of Roll for the Galaxy and Eminent Domain, it seems.
is there a reason you don't show the solo rules??? i always wanna know them but they're never explained??? thanks for the video though. I've bought Paydirt, and scoville because of your (how-to-play) videos and my wife and I love them both looking forward to getting this one too.P.S. also because of your videos i did NOT buy yomi, or belfort. thank you.
superchee2e Most rules will have variants, or solo rules, and I typically choose not to cover them. I tend to see solo rules as variants to the main game, and I don't cover variants either. In cases where the solo rules are actually a fuller rules system (like in the game Legacy that we did), I will show them as well. Mainly though, I just like to keep the rules videos from being overly long :)
I'm just discovering some of the Solo play games. You've already convinced me to order D&D Wrath of Ashardalon. Now it looks like I'll be getting this as well. :-) Have you done any Vids on One Deck Dungeon? I couldn't find any.
Marco9603 I know it's an old comment, but the game just came back in stock on Amazon (in the US)recently, if you're still looking for it. I would assume the Canada site has it back in stock, too.
Question on the Colony action (sorry if it's been asked already!) If someone follows your Colony action, do they copy the exact Colony action that you took, or do they just get their own Colony action to use, either to upgrade or use one of their own colonized planets?
Once a player reaches 21 victory points or more, the end of the game is triggered. Victory points from the Secret Missions do not count towards ending the game - so they are only revealed at the end.
Can a player only follow the last action another player has taken? Or can they follow any action another player has taken at any time of someone else's turn?
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
A few quick questions. Can you follow the same action as long as it is taken by two different players. Say three of us a re playing. Can i follow the energy of the first player and the energy of the second player? or would that violate the rule regarding following the same action twice? Secondly is there anywhere to buy extra die? I find it really annoying that we have to send them around someone inevitably ends up rolling a few die more or less then they were supposed to :)
You can follow each die as it's resolved, so you can even follow the same single players actions more than once (you can only copy a single die once, but EACH die can be followed, by spending 1 culture each time). Does that make sense? I'm not sure if I'm typing that clearly.
The Utilize Colony die allows you to use the ability of a planet you had previously colonized and added to your personal player mat (not the ones still out in the display, that you might have landed on). You'll find this explained here: ruclips.net/video/qDRFYtoFgHA/видео.htmlm57s
Ive played this game already a couple times but around 5:00 in you stated that when resolving issues in following you start with the player on the left of the active player. This caused some confusion with our players in whether or not the active player was added to this group of resolving timing. I felt the player whom was active is not involved in the dispute and his actions are always first, as they are following him. I mean, there's no chance you would have an action if you werent following an initial action in the first place. two of our players insisted that all actions are simultaneous and that the acting player is also added into the timing sequence, but that would make him last in actions. As the owning player (and is standard in our group), I got to decide what the resolution was here, and we played this way for that game, but its still bothering those two players. How do you (and the rest of the subscribers) read this rule?
Here is the part in the rule book I believe you are referring to: "On a player’s turn, after that player has activated a die, all other players have a brief moment to decide whether they want to follow that action. To follow, a player must spend 1 culture. That player may then copy that die’s action immediately. Each player may only perform 1 follow action per die. Any timing disputes should be resolved in clockwise order, starting from the player to the left of the active player." I think the key wording here is "after [the active player] has activated a die"... all the rules that follow, happen AFTER the active player has already gone. So if other people are following, they are doing so after the active player has fully taken their turn. My understanding is that you have it right.
Question: Can you use energy and culture to upgrade your empire on the same turn? Or, must each be used for upgrading on separate turns? Nice play-through. Thanks!
Machine Noise From the way he described it, it sounds like you can, as long as you have enough colony activation dice available to activate (and of course enough energy and culture)... but you can only spend one type of resource per activation. I also think that, for example, if you have 7 energy and your empire is on "2", you could spend a colony activation die and 3 energy to advance your empire to "3", then spend another colony activation die and 4 energy to advance your empire to "4". Of course if you've really been hoarding resources, this means that if you happen to get three colony activation dice, you could spend all three, and spend the 7 energy to advance from 2->3->4, then spend 5 culture to advance to 5, all in one turn.
Machine Noise If you use two separate Utilize A Colony die actions, you can colonize twice, and each time you can change the type of resource you use during each.
When getting to the end of the empire track can a player start over and continue gaining more victory points or are the maximum amount of victory points from the galaxy mat capped at 8?
Hey Michael, the victory points showing on the far left track and tied to how much you've upgraded your empire, and at most, you can upgrade it to the top of its track. Hope that helps!
Wow. Quick reply :D I played this game with my 3rd and 4th-grade elementary students in a summer camp last year. We did horribly for our first and second playthroughs. Promptly went out in a blaze of glory with our "captain" declaring, "I'm taking you all with me!"
I understand the desire for a tie breaker, I'm just telling you what the rules say: "The player with the most victory points wins! If tied, the player with the most colonized planets wins. If still tied, the player with the highest galaxy level wins. If still tied, the player with the highest combined total of resources wins. If still tied, enjoy your shared victory." You might be able to contact the publisher to see if they could give you an additional rule, but that's the best I can do.
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - but hopefully you see a few games on here that might be what you are looking for!
Great job, Rodney. You have a knack for teaching rules simply and clearly. Glad I backed this game!
***** Thank you Jacob - hope you have a great time playing!
With Rodney, no need for a rule book =)
Glad you enjoyed!
"But I leave it to you to explore on your own..." 😉
I like the Tiny Epic games, but this one is my favorite. I like your reviews; always thorough yet concise. Thanks for posting the tutorial!
+Jose Fitchett Glad you enjoyed it Jose!
I like to imagine the game designers coming up with more and more elaborate ways to resolve a tie, before just saying "screw it" and letting both players win.

We played for the first time tonight and messed up this rule, too. Watched this video afterwards. :-)
If there's still a tie, you decide who wins by playing a game of Rock Paper Scissors.
If there's a tie?

A pleasure to assist! That Ultra Tiny Epic version lives up to its name. I couldn't believe they got it down that small when I first saw the box :)
I love space-themed games, so this seems great for me!
I was finally able to get my hands on this game, and now after watching your video I feel like I am good to go! Thanks!
You're very welcome John - have a great time playing!

+TheGreatHamEl Sorry I can't help there. I avoid trying to assess what would be fun for someone else.
Great video! Any plans to do a gameplay video for Tiny Epic Galaxy?
+Marcelo Cerri Not currently, but it could happen eventually.
is there a reason you don't show the solo rules??? i always wanna know them but they're never explained??? thanks for the video though.
Great video. Got my copy on order.
Hope you have a great time playing Paul!
I just bought this game. You helped me understand it thanks!
So nice to hear Neil - I hope you have a fun time playing it!
Another great review and another game I need to purchase.
Evil Dice Games Thanks for checking it out.
Thanks a lot! Your explanations are soooo clear.
So nice of you to say Carl!
I'm just discovering some of the Solo play games. You've already convinced me to order D&D Wrath of Ashardalon. Now it looks like I'll be getting this as well. :-)
Have you done any Vids on One Deck Dungeon? I couldn't find any.
Glad you’re enjoying the videos. I haven’t covered that title, no.
very cool game. very concise explanation.
Thank you kindly!
Amazing explanation of this game, great video!
Thank you Gonzalo!
Great video Rodney. Are you going to do a playthrough? Isnt this game "similar" to Roll for the Galaxy?
Keep up the great videos!
AFAL Gameplays I have not played Roll For The Galaxy, so I'm not sure there. I do hope to do a play through.
They are similar, but RftG is a bit more game. That is not to say less about TEG, both games are fun and have a cool space vibe.
I can't seem to find this game anywhere online (Canada). Is it still available?
Yes, but it may not have fully hit retail yet. Do consider contacting the publisher to see if they have any information though.
Marco9603 I know it's an old comment, but the game just came back in stock on Amazon (in the US)recently, if you're still looking for it. I would assume the Canada site has it back in stock, too.
Excellent explanation ! Thanks
You're very welcome Jakob - have fun playing :)
Question on the Colony action (sorry if it's been asked already!)
If someone follows your Colony action, do they copy the exact Colony action that you took, or do they just get their own Colony action to use, either to upgrade or use one of their own colonized planets?
+Andy Dominguez They just get their own colony action to use - they don't have to use it in the same way that the active player used it..
+Watch It Played Thanks for the quick response, and for all the awesome videos! Your work is greatly appreciated!
+Andy Dominguez A pleasure to assist!
This is very well explained - thank you :)
You're very welcome, glad you enjoyed it!
Great review as always, thank you!
Do the victory points from your secret mission count towards the total 21 needed to end the game, or do all 21 points have to be visible?
Once a player reaches 21 victory points or more, the end of the game is triggered. Victory points from the Secret Missions do not count towards ending the game - so they are only revealed at the end.
Can a player only follow the last action another player has taken? Or can they follow any action another player has taken at any time of someone else's turn?
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
Thanks, i reconsider now to buy this game :)
Thanks for checking it out!
Just received my copy in the mail today.
+FalconAshe K Hope you have a great time playing!
What's the purpose of showing the planets ability after you colonize it? Can you use it again at some point?
Carl Frodge Hey Carl, here is the section you are looking for: ruclips.net/video/qDRFYtoFgHA/видео.htmlm57s
***** oh perfect, thanks!
Carl Frodge No problem!
Yeah. Thx for clearing it up :)
When you land on a planet you use the planet ability immediately. Can you use it again by spending a utilize colony dice?
The Utilize Colony die allows you to use the ability of a planet you had previously colonized and added to your personal player mat (not the ones still out in the display, that you might have landed on). You'll find this explained here: ruclips.net/video/qDRFYtoFgHA/видео.htmlm57s
you should have a go at teaching Roll for the Galaxy - I've heard the rules aren't very good :)
Thanks for the interest. I do have it, but haven't tried it yet.
Here is the part in the rule book I believe you are referring to:
"On a player’s turn, after that player has activated a die, all other players
have a brief moment to decide whether they want to follow that action.
To follow, a player must spend 1 culture. That player may then copy
that die’s action immediately. Each player may only perform 1 follow
action per die. Any timing disputes should be resolved in clockwise order,
starting from the player to the left of the active player."
I think the key wording here is "after [the active player] has activated a die"... all the rules that follow, happen AFTER the active player has already gone. So if other people are following, they are doing so after the active player has fully taken their turn.
My understanding is that you have it right.
Thanks very much for your quick response to my question. I think you happened to explain it better than I could have :D
Got to have this, thanks for review
zwicky93 A pleasure to share :)
zwicky93 Excited to get my kickstarter copy soon(ish)!
Chillburn Have fun ;)
Thanks Rodney!!
My pleasure - thanks for checking it out!
So when choosing the secret missions, are you allowed to look at them, or do you just have to discard one randomly?
+Henry D You get to look at them, and then choose the one you want to keep.
thanks
looks epic. hope to get this soon
+Jordan Dyksley Hope you enjoy it!
When you hit 21 at the end of the game can you finish to activate more dice if you still have them or your turn stop immediately.
Be sure to check the description of the video - you'll find an index there, which should take you to the answer for your question!
This is the greatest thing ever
Hey hey - glad you enjoyed Schadel!
excellent as always, thank you!
You're welcome!
Good video as always Rodney maybe ill Pick this up at spiel 2015
Sebastiaan Kuijs Ooo, wish I was going to Spiel! Have a great time!
Yeah spiel is only 2 hours away from my house so i must go :)
Will there be a playthrough of this?
***** I hope to. Will depend on my schedule.
How many games are in the tiny epic series
A bunch!
Your videos are horrible for my bank account.
+Frank Zed But hopefully good for your game shelves :)
Nice one 😅
That is dangerously truthful!
These videos have better directions than the directions
Very nice of you to say!
This game has Luke all over it. Dice rolling, space theme...I predict a lopsided victory!
J Young He is the one who learned and taught me to play (and no, I haven't won against him yet...)
So the most Victory points you can gain from your Galaxy Mat is 8.
@@michaellee6537 You've got it! Eight is the max, because you can't upgrade your items higher than that track goes.
Shout out to my fellow Tabletop Simulator Players
Nice video!
Thank you!
I'm still waiting for you, Pep, Luke, and Andrea to play Space Cadets :D
I haven't played that one. I do have the dice version.
Wow. Quick reply :D
I played this game with my 3rd and 4th-grade elementary students in a summer camp last year. We did horribly for our first and second playthroughs. Promptly went out in a blaze of glory with our "captain" declaring, "I'm taking you all with me!"
reminds me of pocket mars from this
But what if there is still a tie?
Tied players share the victory.
Yeah but which of the tied players wins? My buddy and I have to know - we don't play for participation ribbons. A tie isn't going to work for us.
I understand the desire for a tie breaker, I'm just telling you what the rules say:
"The player with the most victory points wins! If tied, the player with the most colonized planets wins. If still
tied, the player with the highest galaxy level wins. If still tied, the player with the highest combined total of resources wins. If still tied, enjoy your shared victory."
You might be able to contact the publisher to see if they could give you an additional rule, but that's the best I can do.
New theme song?
crackawhat1 Chaz updated it for us for the new season.
What is your favorite Tiny Epic Game?
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - but hopefully you see a few games on here that might be what you are looking for!
