I am german and of course I love German Riesling from all of the growing areas, but usually when I want to go hedonistic I'll go to wachau smaragd. That's just cracking stuff
The Wittmann isnt a "Erstes Gewächs". If you look on the neck it says "Aus ersten Lagen". Its a novelty in Rheinhessen and translates (qualitywise, not in meaning) to "Ortswein" or village. But it gets even more complicated. Used are only grapes from "Große Lagen" out of a village, in this case Westhofen.
Its between quality of a typical "Ortswein" and "Erstes Gewächs". Some producers in the Mosel region began to use these label as well. Its not well known even in Germany. Its highly controversial because it complicates the system...
One of my favorite wine memories was back in 2002 when a wine bar in San Francisco called Hayes and Vine hosted a German and Austrian wine tasting. There were close to 50 wines that we tasted including some sparkling wines, but the best part were all the great Rieslings from both regions. That varietal in particular has a special place in my heart as my favorite white wine. I am however branching out to different regions and new varietals that I have not tried in the past thanks to your thoughtful and refreshing content. Thank you Matthew for bringing excitement to the wine world.
Another German viewer here so you’re preaching to the converted 😊 I am glad to have you as an ambassador for our most famous grape variety. It is absolutely true that the best value lies in Erste Lage and Village wines. For most consumers over here, Riesling isn’t the go-to variety but everytime I share one with friends they are stunned.
We are with my wife Riesling lovers. Best are from Germany, but we like also Rieslings from Kamptal and Kremstal. And I remember, that Huia Riesling from New Zealand was interesting and alsom Alkoomi Riesling 2005 from Maragreth River from Australia was grispy with many petrol notes. Really good. Thanks Matthew.
As an austrian my go to Riesling is Gobelsburg (but the cheaper ones ~10-15€) Just had a KungFu Girl from Charles Smith(Washinghton?) , really good too. The best ive had was from Germany , its quite a tongue breaker "1998 Rheingau Kloster Eberbach Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland Auslese" 😂 It had like no acidity, was dry but had exotic taste notes, like sweet dessert wine just without sweetnes. The longest finish ever
Have you ever tried the Riesling bottle from Borgogno (Barolo CN)? Would be a heck of a wild card Riesling in a blind tasting. It was the wine that convinced me to visit the winery last Fall!
Hi Matthew and thanks for a great tasting again! After watching this video yesterday I just managed it today to get the Austrian Riesling to compare to your thoughts at below 30 €. I'm basically more into Grüner/Roter Veltiners from my region but I can totally understand you rating the Gaisberg Riesling at 94 points due to its intensity, roundness and fruit character - really an excellent wine. You should definitely try Gobelsburg's Riesling Ried Heiligenstein as well and in addition the Wachau smaragd Rieslings from famous producers as Hirtzberger, Alzinger, Gritsch a.s.o... - not to forget less famous producers from the right bank of the danube like Lahrnsteig, Fischer and Frischengruber. Best regards from Vienna/Austria!
Great video Matthew. I have had the Ekam on blind tasting three times and the two first times i also guessed on German Riesling, the third time I spotted it only because I remembered my previous mistakes. Really good wine, and in Spain it's around 20€, excellent value.
My favorite white grape by far, was really impressed with Wachau wines when I visited, but overall Germany manages what no one else can due to their climate, Mosel is for Riesling what Burgundy is for Pinot, most breathtaking wine I had recently was a 2018 Scharzhof from Egon Müller, tasted basically completely dry despite 10.5% Alcohol and it had the most razor sharp acidity 🤤
Great tip on the 1G on the label, that’s good to know. What an experience to have been able to live in Germany for a few months, my wife & I have been to Oktoberfest a few times, but need to travel up to the wine regions. Great blind tastings today, always love your energy. Cheers man. - Cam
Visit „Wurstmarkt“ in September in Bad Dürkheim. In the Pfalz Wine Region. It‘s the Oktoberfest of the Wine world. Actually, it‘s the largest wine fest in the world. Dozens of producers present there
Wow, a Spanish Riesling from Catalunya that is amazing, who knew?! I went to a Schloss Gobelsburg tasting close to 10 years ago, but there wasn't any Riesling. Riesling appeals to all wine nerds and even serious foodies, as its easy to pair with practically any dish or food type. Value for money German Riesling is probably the best, due to availability and quality. Besides that Austria and Australia are my favorites. Here in Hungary, surprisingly Riesling is pretty high quality and often better or at least more exciting than the Chardonnay. Cheers and great video.
I LOVE Riesling and have been lucky enough to have had Wittmann in our shop. Super limestoney and oh, so tasty! 5 Nerd Stars for including the Spanish one.
Riesling is my favorite white wine grape by far! It has been both very reliable across most brands to exquisite at all price points that I have tried! My favorites have been the insanely value 2021 Chateau Ste Michelle Dry Riesling (you rated 92+ pts), to the 2022 Dönnhoff Tonschiefer Riesling Dry Slate and 2022 Bründlmayer Riesling Terrassen Kamptal on the entry+ level, and the 2017 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf 'R' Wachenheim Riesling Trocken on the moderate end.
Im a big Riesling fan too, easily my favourite grape variety. I like most styles but if I had to pick one style it would be the loosely defined Feinherb. My biggest surprise last year was Casa Marin Riesling from Chile. Amazing! Just over 20usd here in Sweden. Nice line up!
Riesling fan here. Arguably it's my favourite white wine varietal. And thanks for flying the flag for sweet wines, many of which are great but sadly misunderstood.
I always say that objectively Riesling is the best grape to make wine from. I usually have a couple of bottles of GG at home for celebratory occasions and for someone who's far from affluent they are still affordable.
Great Video, Riesling and Albariño my 2 favorite white grapes, Some of them make you only want drink until you can't drink no more....and don't need to empy your wallet for taste a really good one. And for almost the same reason i love syrah, tempranillo and monastrell.
you know, since climate is clearly changing and we know that most classifications of wine regions are mostly based on how good grapes could ripen, maybe, just maybe it is time to slowly reassess them😅
Hi really interested in trying more white wine, but reading a lot of reviews on Riesling people mention lightly sweet on lots This puts me off. Had a gewurztraminer and was way to sweet!
I just moved from the finger lakes to the bay and I’ve had multiple tasting room hosts in napa tell me ‘we don’t have sweet wines’ when I ask about riesling. I don’t know how I’m gonna make it man
I would almost say that Austria cheated. Their 1otw is equal to GG, since they havent pointed out their GG sites yet. Gaisberg and Heiligenstein are considered -by most- as the two best sites in Austria atm ;)
Gaisberg is great but not their best Riesling, Heiglegenstein is the top Riesling vineyard from Gobelsburg. Give it a try. But the best Rieslings in Austria come from the terraced vineyards of the Wachau. Epic wines.

Greetings from Germany ✌🏽🇩🇪 We love your Riesling Videos 😏
Danke
Riesling is the best.
I am german and of course I love German Riesling from all of the growing areas, but usually when I want to go hedonistic I'll go to wachau smaragd. That's just cracking stuff
It is!
Greetings from Finland. Riesling is my favorite white, but Albarino and SB is good as well. This video was great again👍🍾👊
🙏🙏🙏
Visited Schloss Gobelsburg a few years ago and their 3year cuvee is stunning! Their 10y cuvee is on my list to-try. Cheers
Yes the Tradition!!!

Hot tip! Although Wittmann does classify this wine under their Erste Lage category on their website
Good to see Austria! Love their wines
Soooo good

That is quite the tasting!
I'm so happy about the fact, that Austria is so under the radar. The wines are very good, and still affordable. Best regards vom Burgenland!
Ahhh danke! Yes Austrian wines are soooooo good
I like Riesling from the Traisental area
😮😮😮

Agreed! They open eyes

Gooooooooo Riesling
More Riesling Content… ;-) Would also try „Hirsch“ from Kamptal. Thank you
There are a lot of vids on the channel!

I have! Glad you tried this gem

Ohhh I love Mosel but I am more for Nahe
In a couple of your videos you say these “type” of videos don’t do well on the channel and it brings the vibe down. You have great videos
🙏🙏🙏🙏

I have had some darn good ones there but none that brought me the magic of Teutonic countries
I LOVE Riesling and have been lucky enough to have had Wittmann in our shop. Super limestoney and oh, so tasty! 5 Nerd Stars for including the Spanish one.
Niceeee and thanks for Geeky stamp of approval
Another great video 🎉
shows how versatile a Riesling can be
I'm curious, have you tried the Rings Annaberg 2023?
I hope to in a few months!
Riesling is my favorite white wine grape by far!

Ohhh yes I love sweet Kabinetts sooooooo much
I need to get my hands on some high altitude Catalan Riesling! Exciting!
It is indeed!
Greetings from 🇦🇹🇦🇹🇦🇹 🎉
Danke!
All of the Riesling content. Please.
Riesling heads unite!
As an Austrian I prefer the Austrian Riesling and I am happy to see that we won🙂...not to say that I don't like the Riesling of our neighbours.
Both are great!
Riesling fan here. Arguably it's my favourite white wine varietal. And thanks for flying the flag for sweet wines, many of which are great but sadly misunderstood.
Agreed!!! Most people also don’t realize that while sweets are great most of the Riesling made is dry
Riesling is dope!
Yessssah
You should visit Austria with @no sediment and do some collabs 😀
I have had her on the channel and she will be again!
I always say that objectively Riesling is the best grape to make wine from. I usually have a couple of bottles of GG at home for celebratory occasions and for someone who's far from affluent they are still affordable.
Good strategy!

Spain does offer value!
you know, since climate is clearly changing and we know that most classifications of wine regions are mostly based on how good grapes could ripen, maybe, just maybe it is time to slowly reassess them😅
That is a thought! Old German wine law still does and some parts of Austria!
Hi really interested in trying more white wine, but reading a lot of reviews on Riesling people mention lightly sweet on lots This puts me off. Had a gewurztraminer and was way to sweet!
These are dryyyyy go to your local shop and ask for good dry Riesling
I just moved from the finger lakes to the bay and I’ve had multiple tasting room hosts in napa tell me ‘we don’t have sweet wines’ when I ask about riesling. I don’t know how I’m gonna make it man
Smith Madrone does a stellar one in Spring Mountain
I would almost say that Austria cheated. Their 1otw is equal to GG, since they havent pointed out their GG sites yet. Gaisberg and Heiligenstein are considered -by most- as the two best sites in Austria atm ;)
Yes they are stellar sights!!! GGs there are coming in their wine laws
You're right and compared to German Rieslings they are very reasonably in price 😉
Damn. My kind of blind tasting
Hahaha me too
I’ve had a few Italian Riesling and I wish the did a better job. The wines lack the acidity of the German Riesling.
There are a handful of good ones
@@drmatthewhorkeywhich ones? I don’t get that unique acidity taste I get in German and Australian.
Gaisberg is great but not their best Riesling, Heiglegenstein is the top Riesling vineyard from Gobelsburg. Give it a try. But the best Rieslings in Austria come from the terraced vineyards of the Wachau. Epic wines.
That is a top top notch vineyard! You’ll see their GV from there soon
It's actually "Heiligenstein"!
@ thanks, spelling is never going to be my strong suit
Love good Rieslings... German, French (Alsace), Austrian... Challenge is there are a lot of awful German rieslings in the USA
Yesssir I did a video on them vs a German a few years ago
It’s „erste” not „ershte” for God’s sake! 😂
🙏🙏🙏
And „Shlos” not „shlosh”. Damn, you Americans. Put some effort in pronouncation. 😂😂😂
🫡
Germany is the Mecca. That said the most profound Riesling I’ve ever had was 1989 clos ste hune. Wowoww!
Waahhhhhh
