    Lyrics:
Long distance information, give me Memphis Tennessee
Help me find a party that tried to get in touch with me
She did not leave a number but I know who placed the call
'Cause my uncle took a message and he wrote it on the wall
Help me, information, get in touch with my Marie
She's the only one who'd call me here from Memphis Tennessee
Her home is on the south side, high upon a ridge
Just a half a mile from the Mississippi bridge
Last time I saw Marie she was wavin' me goodbye
With "hurry-home" drops on her cheek that trickled from her eye
We were pulled apart because her mom did not agree
She tore apart our happy home in Memphis Tennessee
Help me, information, more than that I cannot add
Only that I miss her and all the fun we had
Marie is only six years old, information please
You got to put me through to her in Memphis Tennessee

Elvis actually recorded this song first. Johnny Rivers was a guest at Elvis' home and Elvis played his recording of "Memphis" for Johnny Rivers who had never heard it before. He asked Elvis to hear his recording again. Elvis, being proud of his recording of the song, of course played it for Rivers again. It was not long after when Elvis heard Johnny Rivers' recording of this same song on the radio. Elvis felt Johnny betrayed him on this song. Elvis never wanted Johnnny Rivers around him again!

His music may be timeless, but it HAD to come out when it did. Can you imagine someone in today's society writing lyrics about, 'missing his 6-year-old daughter and all the fun they had'? That's what's Johnny Rivers' stock in trade -- taking original pieces from other artists and covering it like nobody's business. I could fill up a two-album set with songs he covered by a stable of different artists and writers and absolutely killed it. This one and "Baby I Need Your Lovin'" are two of his best.

For those wondering, the other musicians are bassist Joe Osborn and drummer Eddie Rubin.

Osborn, seriously? I read somewhere that back around '64-'65 the JR trio was the hottest act on Sunset Strip, sort of the house band at Whiskey A Go-Go and I believe this song was recorded there live.

This song just takes me to a whole different level of being I will listen to it on repeat for half hour or longer .. It's comparable to holy roller level a blind grandma Moses walking the backs of pews never missing a step.. Stabbing Westward's Shame and Wet Leg Chaise Lounge does that too..

I can't imagine anyone thinking that he stole this song from Elvis. I can't imagine Elvis trying to sing it. Chuck Berry wrote it. Lonnie Mack recorded it and then Johnny recorded it. Do your homework folks.
