I'm guessing the people who thumbs down this doesn't know anything about building a trailer. This thing looks amazing I was curious how much you had into the build? I'm getting ready to do one very similar for myself. All the ones you buy from the dealer are junk
Hi and tanks. I do detail the cost in the comments thread if you go back about 6 months, but the empty cargo trailer built to my specs was about $6,500 and you can double that to build it out as I did and not include solar. Please don't hold me to exact amount. Of course, you can do one for less depending on alot of things.

I have watched every cargo conversion that I can find on RUclips. Although there are many, many good ones, I like yours the best. Actually, I love it. Hi Again, Don! Hope you're well. I was wondering if you have any videos that show your antenna solution for HF when you're out and about in your cargo trailer/camper? Or maybe if you could just detail what you're using? I'm trying to figure out a solution for my setup, and I don't really have a lot of technical expertise with antennas. Hi... I have tried several antennas over time, but I have settled on the Chameleon MPAS 2.0 vertical for my primary portable HF antenna. Is is a bit pricey, but worth it to me as I can set it up and tear down in less than 10 minutes, it seems to work effectively, covers the entire Amatuer HF spectrum allocation, and I do not require an external antenna tuner. However, I recently bought an Yaesu ATAS-120A vertical antenna that will screw onto the mount on the trailer in less than a minute, but I have not tried it out yet, so I cannot recommend it yet. It is meant for mobile applications and does require a Yaesu HF radio that has the ATAS Tuning (Automatic Tuning Antnenna System) capability embodied. I have the Yaesu FT-991A All Band portable which I use... so this should work well, but I do not have any experience with it yet. I bought this antenna for when I am in places where it would not be practical to setup the MPAS 2.0 (such as a parking lot or etc.) . I will travel with both. Here is a video I made early this year when I was camping in my 6x12 Cargo Trailer and I was using the MPAS 2.0. You will see the entire setup and @ 2:12 I show the antenna setup. ruclips.net/video/eq-1KjL23ck/видео.html Best wishes.
Hi. I actually got the tanks off a scrapped truck camper..I did not buy them; however there are sellers on Ebay if you can find one with the dimensions needed. If you get tanks to fit between. 16in floor joists (15in wide tank), installation is as simple as making 2 or three hangers with threaded rods and nuts with some angle iron between them. Use some water treated plywood to rest on the tanks on. I also did this on my 6x12 build. See more on that about 3 minutes 25 seconds or so into this video: ruclips.net/video/jlCumTptV3M/видео.html
Hi Don. I watched all the videos of your 6x12, and on that trailer IIRC, you used 3/4" insulation with 1/4" wood strips to create a 1/4" gap between the insulation and the outer skin. I'm wondering if you did the same thing on this build, but if you mentioned it, I missed it. What your thoughts on doing that are now that some time has passed? I'm about to do my own conversion, and wondering if I should take that same approach. I live in Texas, but I'll use this on trips to Montana in the summers. So, no 'cold' weather, unless you call Montana summer nights cold (and some do). Plenty of Texas heat though... Oh, P.S. Which way would you suggest placing the foil side? I'm thinking outward, to reflect some of the heat, though I don't know how much of a difference it would actually make. Thanks in advance, and great job...I hope mine turns out as well as either of yours! Art
Thanks Art. I did not do it the same. In this case the gap was more on the inside between the panel. I have not noticed any issues with it, but my thought process was to allow condensation that will occur in cold weather on the inside of the skin get a little more air circulation so I have no mold issues. I don't think it necessarily improves insulation characteristics and I've not noticed any mold issues either.
Outstanding build but I have a question that someone else asked but you never answered it. At the 4:39 mark you show the channels and rollers you used for the bed. What are they called, and where did you source them at?
Hi. Thanks. The channel I got at Home Depot. It is that channel they use for hanging lights and etc. in warehouses. Some call it struts and others call it electrical channel. It is in the electrical section. I just painted it white with spray paint. The rollers are called Trolleys and they are made for the electrical strut channels. They are called unistrut trolleys and I ordered them from Amazon. Here is a link: www.amazon.com/Genuine-Unistrut-P2950-EG-Trolley-Assembly/dp/B00KN9UA0S. BTW.. only use trolleys on one side. I used them on all four coners and unless the bed is adjusted and hoisted evenly, they will bind. Better to leve one side with alot of paly and use the channel at a guide. Kinda like the trollys without wheels. Need something to rest on the pins.
I realize this was posted a few years ago, hoping you will still answer or even see it. I was wondering how much space is under the bed, length wise from ramp to holding tank boxes?
I'd have to measure again. The front wheels of the motorcycles go past the tanks, so the tanks do not limit the length of the motorcycle. Handlebars and etc. stand of is wider than the tanks.
I recovered them from a Truck Camper that was being disposed of. It was a perfect fit at 15" wide to fit between the Floor Joists. I made an updated video with latest upgrades. ruclips.net/video/MUcMM86LA2g/видео.html
@@TheCritterWindow thanks. Good luck with your build. A bathroom up front will be nice.. if you will have a blackwater tank, a little more challenging with all the trailer frame members in the way unless you build up the floor and keep tank inside. Toilets typically drop the payload directly into toilet. :-)
When I see a converted utility trailer (V-nose) I wonder if there's units available with the door installed onto the drivers side angled wall versus the side (or diy to move it)? I always thought that nose, though aerodynamic (kind of), is nearly useless space. ;-)
Hi. The AC I installed first was a 6,000 BTU. It worked well but believe it or not the Honda would not start it on Eco mode. I had an 8,000 BTU GE unit that would start with Honda on Eco mode and it cooled the CTC better, so I installed that one. I got it from Home Depot, but you can find them just about anywhere. These are widow AC units and as you can see, I built a shelf internat to the CTC and used foam board to isolate input and output of air for flow and it work like it is just hanging out a window. Many advantages to include the right size AC for the camper, can use a small 2000W Generator to run, and it is much cheaper than large RV rooftop unit which is too large for smaller campers.
It weighed 2900lbs before mod and approximately 4200 lbs after. Fully loaded with water, motorcycle and etc. is 6400 lbs. Pulled with an F150, but now have and F250.
Nice work, you will HATE how close you mounted the panels to the roof, my first build I did 2" and it still got hot enough to blister the paint. My current build I'm doing 4" minimum.
@@donsdoityourself2547 That is paint, if it weren't painted it would oxidize and corrode. I could certainly be wrong but other than the Airsteam and a few other like models I'm not aware of any unfinished aluminum trailer and can't imagine anybody wanting one.
@@ZeroEntropy. There is no paint, I do know that, but it very well may be a galvanized sheet metal on the roof then. In any case, it looks as good as the day I bought it under the collectors. The temperature of the roof exposed to direct sunlight is significantly hotter to touch than under the collectors which in effect, shade the roof. At least that is what I am seeing. Just checked it in full sunlight.
Wow, shit, damn! That’s f’ing awesome sir! I have so many questions though. But just how did you figure out where to get all your fittings an camper accessories like outdoor shower box and all that stuff? Absolutely beautiful!
Thanks. I actually have a GE 8,000 BTU Air Conditioner and 500W of Solar with 440aH (4 6V Golf Car batteries). I started out with a 6,000 BTU Air conditioner (not a GE) which worked well, but for some reason my Honda eU2000i could not start it from ECO mode whereas the 8,000 BTU unit will start from Eco Mode. Never did figure out why. All I can figure is it must have had a very large inrush at start up, but in any case, I wanted to be able to use the Generator from Eco mode so it idles down when the compressor cycles off.
@@donsdoityourself2547 i placed a second compactor on my a/c only 5k start up amps was 21. the 2nd compactor droped it 14amps cost was like $10. but 5k a/c is to small to keep up in july at noon. was thinking going 8k like you did. like you set up was have a lot in common in your build. well at least the tape and a/c i'm build a complete custom shower due to curved well. i have a bulldog nose on my 7x18. but i like the build i hope mine turns out half as nice gives me hope. thaks

I have a 2011 Ford F150 Extra Cab 4WD with 5.0L V8 rated to pull 9,200lbs. The toyhauler is ~ 6,300 lbs fully loaded with bike and full water tanks. It is probably close to 4,000 lbs empty. Bottom line... plenty of margin. I have pulled the trailer through the Smokey Mountains and etc.. No problems. I have installed airbags on the truck to stiffen it up from road bounce and I alsi use a load balancing hitch with anti sway. It pulls perfectly down the highway and is very stable.
@@donsdoityourself2547 very nice! Thanks for the responce. Great build. I pull my cargo with a 2000 f250 v10. It does great in the city and around small hills but feels like it dogs down on a 8% grade hill longer than 2miles or more. I appreciate the replay. Happy 4th!
I have about $14K including the solar. Yes, I saved $$ over buying an already built one, but lots of labor invested. Saving the $$ was not the primary motivation however. It was getting exactly the size and capabilities I wanted and the build quality. Most factory trailers are poorly built and if you want a quality build, it will cost two to three times that. I bought the utility trailer brand new.. ordered to my specifications for ~$6,300 (do not recall exact) and the rest I spent on materiel and furnishings. It adds up quick. But I am happy with the size. I can get it into tight places and parking lots and still use the trailer bed and etc. roadside without having to remove the bikes. I could not find anything 18' long that could do that. I am a boondocker so wanted as small as possible, yet with full features.
@@donsdoityourself2547 Great reply. I have a 6x10 Lark I converted, not as a toy hauler. My cabinet faces have nothing on yours, but the costs do add up. For @DailyWalk365, I spent almost $4k on the new trailer with a bunch of extras like screwless exterior, extra running lights, and pre-installed cargo doors (like Don at :35 - :50). Then the build out cost over $9k. Things like getting cushions upholstered so they convert to a full queen runs up costs where you wouldn't have expected. I don't have a flush toilet or black tank, but otherwise have most all the same systems, 300W solar, and similar great (if I do say so myself) insulation. Per square foot our rigs are similar, so that should be a good estimate for you. Not cheap, especially with labor as he mentions. But you get exactly what you want. When I see a T@b trailer that costs nearly twice as much and is less capable, I'm glad I went my route.
Thanks. For a few reasons.. Visibility when hauling , less wind load when towing, the extra 12 inches in width did not add to floor plan as much as an extra 2ft in length. I was also concerned about branches running the sides of the trailer. Now if my mirrors make it.. the trailer clears. I also like the look better.
Seriously... I put a lid on it with a rubber seal. Dicor tape to seal on roof. It is not going to leak.. so far so good. I inspect it once a year.... no problems yet.
@@cdp50359 Thanks. I see what you mean now. The wires have a seal also that compresses and to be safe, I also capped it off with silicone caulk. If I were redoing it, I would turn it around so it would not be hit head on with wind while traveling. So far.. no leaking, but you are right, would have been better facing the opposite direction.
A 2011 Ford F150 4WD with 5.0L V8 with tow package. Trailer is about ~4,000 lbs empty and near 6,000 fully loaded with water, motorcycle, etc.. and the truck does not hesitate. The truck is rated for towing up to 9,200 lbs.
Any thoughts on making a ramp-door patio? Have you seen the one that ATC offers on their toy haulers? I'm thinking about getting one of those if they sell them separately for the general market like myself. I don't own a ATC trailer so they probably will say no sale. See it here, no affiliation to them, just thought it was cool option: ruclips.net/video/GpmQ9gyj6c0/видео.html
Hi. Thanks for the link. I have thought about it, but I have an Awning on the side, so it really does not make a lot of sense for me since that is effectively the patio. I have though about making just a screen for the back that attaches with magnets so I can leave it open and get the air and keep the bugs out... but that would just be for good weather.
Great conversion. But I don't understand why these videos that don't have any talking have to have formal music in the background. Either have your video with no music or do some narration. Nobody likes the music. It does not help your videos. It's the one comment I keep seeing over and over and over again in these videos with music.
Could have, but this is exactly what I wanted an built much better/sturdier than most anything you can buy except the most expensive ones. I also learned some new skills and enjoy it more knowing I built it.... maybe I am just weird.

That's really nice good job enjoy and have fun with it
Thanks. Here is an update on the finished version. ruclips.net/video/MUcMM86LA2g/видео.html
@@donsdoityourself2547 Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.
Great Build. You really have a talent. Can you tell me where you found black and gray tanks that would fit between 16 inch floor supports? Thanks
I recovered them from a Truck Camper that was being disposed of. It was a perfect fit at 15" wide to fit between the Floor Joists. I made an updated video with latest upgrades. ruclips.net/video/MUcMM86LA2g/видео.html
I want to convert a 7x20. Thinking about putting the bathroom in the front. I also want a screened deck on the ramp door.
O yea forgot Good Job!!
@@donsdoityourself2547 No black water only grey. Composting toilet will be used.
When I see a converted utility trailer (V-nose) I wonder if there's units available with the door installed onto the drivers side angled wall versus the side (or diy to move it)?
I always thought that nose, though aerodynamic (kind of), is nearly useless space. ;-)
T'airn'KA I seen where someone used the nose as the bathroom
This one has the whole kitchen fit in there.
Great job ,but I would have sealed the roof with some of the best white silicone sealer you can buy.
Thanks Brian. I have actually done that since I made this video.
you did a very good job, I'm interested in the event that you use for the AC would you have a link or name? Thanks
One of the best I've seen, In the video it shows you pull truck, Is it a F 150, I have a 7X12 and my 150 struggles. How does yours do.
What you saw was a 2011 F150 with 5.0L V8 with 3.73 gearing and 6 speed automatics . It did fine.. but mpg drops by 50%, but that is typical.
Thanks. You convinced me to sell my 7x14 and buy a real toy hauler
Thanks. Here is an update on the finished version. ruclips.net/video/MUcMM86LA2g/видео.html
Killer job!!!! What was weight empty and after the complete job?
Juan, it was about 4,500 lbs.
Excellent!
Thanks. I made a video with the finished conversion ruclips.net/video/MUcMM86LA2g/видео.html
How much does it weigh before and after. What do you pull it with? Thanks
It weighed 2900lbs before mod and approximately 4200 lbs after. Fully loaded with water, motorcycle and etc. is 6400 lbs. Pulled with an F150, but now have and F250.
@@donsdoityourself2547 Thank you very much.
Nice work, you will HATE how close you mounted the panels to the roof, my first build I did 2" and it still got hot enough to blister the paint. My current build I'm doing 4" minimum.
Thanks. The roof is aluminum and there is no paint under the solar panels to blister in this case.
Thanks. :-) I sourced most all RV related items and etc. from E-Bay and Amazon. Building materials were from the local Home Depot and Lowes.
great job! what size a/c did you use and how big is your solar
@@donsdoityourself2547 i placed a second compactor on my a/c only 5k start up amps was 21. the 2nd compactor droped it 14amps cost was like $10. but 5k a/c is to small to keep up in july at noon. was thinking going 8k like you did. like you set up was have a lot in common in your build. well at least the tape and a/c i'm build a complete custom shower due to curved well. i have a bulldog nose on my 7x18. but i like the build i hope mine turns out half as nice gives me hope. thaks
Sooo dope
Thank you..
I love your set-up and will be inspired to make mine for my upcoming retirement. What I'm a lot more is your Victory Logo because just like you, I'm a Victory Boy for life. Once again Bravo is very successful and without indiscretion, how do you cost your transformation
Thanks Mario. Good luck with your build and go Victory! I love my Kingpin!
Very nice job. Looks like you pull it with an f150 does it pull it good or struggle with the weight?
Thanks.. The F150 has no trouble at all. 5.0L V* is plenty strong.
I'm curious of your truck specs and how well it pulls the trailer? I'm looking to get into a truck similar. Any feed back would be helpful
Happy 4th!
Super nice! What kind of money and time do you have into that?
Thanks. Look down a few comments to DailyWalk365. I answered the same question there.
Wow, someone has talent. That looks great! Curious, did you keep records of total cost for a conversion like this? Care to share?
Nice trailer! Just curious, why didn't you go 8-wide? It wouldn't really take more room?
Good job

Very nice
Where did you source the tanks?
Thanks. I got them from a scrapped out truch camper. The 15" width fit perfectly between the 16" on center floor joists.
that's a big NO NO at 32 sec in the video. water will eventually collect in that box causing corrosion on the terminal and wires
Seriously... I put a lid on it with a rubber seal. Dicor tape to seal on roof. It is not going to leak.. so far so good. I inspect it once a year.... no problems yet.
@@donsdoityourself2547 its the open end were the wires go into the box. Everything else looks perfect and excellent job. I mean absolutely perfect!!!
@@cdp50359 Thanks. I see what you mean now. The wires have a seal also that compresses and to be safe, I also capped it off with silicone caulk. If I were redoing it, I would turn it around so it would not be hit head on with wind while traveling. So far.. no leaking, but you are right, would have been better facing the opposite direction.
what size vehicle do you tow this with?
A 2011 Ford F150 4WD with 5.0L V8 with tow package. Trailer is about ~4,000 lbs empty and near 6,000 fully loaded with water, motorcycle, etc.. and the truck does not hesitate. The truck is rated for towing up to 9,200 lbs.
Where did you get your ladder?
On Amazon
another question have you weigh it yet?
It is ~4,500 lbs...
Nice

Thanks. I made a finished video with narration. ruclips.net/video/MUcMM86LA2g/видео.html
could have just bought a camping trailer hmmm
Utility cargo trailers are built way stronger than the typical travel trailers, especially toy haulers, this guy knew that.
Could have, but this is exactly what I wanted an built much better/sturdier than most anything you can buy except the most expensive ones. I also learned some new skills and enjoy it more knowing I built it.... maybe I am just weird.
That's for people with more money than time, no skills, or no money, but can make a monthly payment. :-)
Not too bright....are you ?
