  • I first featured Glenn Butler's Bug in the dragonfly section of my first book, Fly Patterns for Stillwaters. Unfortunately, this book is now out of print.
For stillwater fly fishers, dragonfly nymphs are a "big fish fly." Brook trout love them. When trout seem fixated on a particular food source, a big dragonfly nymph pattern, such as a Butler's Bug, is tough to resist. Dragon nymphs are a confidence pattern for many stillwater fly fishers. Make sure to tie up a few Butler's Bugs and stash them within your stillwater fly box.

Excellent fly tying, excellent instructions. This is very good dragon fly pattern, writing from my own experience :)

There is a lot going on there. I have never seen or head of this pattern. Looks like a fun tie!
    Does this fish neutrally buoyant?

@@TightLinesNW It is a busy pattern that is over 20 years old. Most dragon nymphs tend to be busy. The deer hair helps slow the sink rate and keep it somewhat off the bottom. This pattern was before we had foam at our disposal.
      Cheers, Phil.
