You don't put sealant on freeze plugs . They are designed to push out to avoid the block from cracking if there is insufficient antifreeze in the coolant system . If you add sealant to the plug it won't allow it to push out and thus you'll result with a cracked engine block
When you took out that freeze plug, it appeared as there was only water coming out of which would indicate that tap water/mineralized water was put in. That would clearly account for the rust and debris/scale buildup and plugging the cooling passages. You should obviously do a diluted acid flush for as long and as many times it takes to get it all out! Cheers
You are 100% correct!! Smart and observant haha. This engine was RUSTY. I use a chemical called "evaporust" on engines like this. They make one that is safe for automotive engines. It is an amazing thing.
If your coolant is bad or long time didn't change so call expired, the copper will eat away your cast iron engine block , it is call galvanic corrosion
Should clean the plug bore so you aren't pushing debris into the passageways with the new plugs and you should also use some sort of sealant on the new plugs, good job using the airhammer seems to work very well, careful when using a socket inside the plug like that if the socket is already a close fit when you push the new plug in it can crimp around the socket and its stuck in there, cheers

@@gagefixeseverything I wish you were here to replace mine on a GM B-body with the 307 Olds. A mechanic told me years back that some of the freeze plugs on that require hoisting the engine several inches.
Well I'll be dipped, that's a hell of a lot easier than swinging a hammer over your head in a confined space with a bunch of sockets and extensions. I will be trying this next time!
You DO NOT APPLY SEALANT TO A FREEZE PLUG . IT PREVENTS THEM FROM PUSHING OUT IF THERE IS INSUFFICIENT ANTIFREEZE IN THE SYSTEM AND YOU WILL RESULT WITH A CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK
Came here to say this! Before he even started I was thinking that he is about to damage the bore surface. He did. Hey he said the fasted. He didn’t say a thing about it being the cleanest 🤣
In the beginning on the video when you're planning on the air hammer there's a round bolt/plug next to it what is that called cause I have one of those on the side of my engine that's leaking antifreeze I thought it was a freeze Plug but I can't find what it is I Googled it the only thing I found was on the the Ford website
mis trusting for sure. you either get unexperianced person ruining more than the orginal problem, and/or getting over charged by the shop. the shop will have you wait weeks without a vehicle or if it is requested to be moved closer to the top priority , then you pay more & they give the job to someone that cuts corners that shouldnt be cut. ie: cleaning mating surfaces before applying gasket, indexing parts before removal to insure proper position at install, so as to prevent more or different failures or even more shop time, like having to re-align the front end. or they assign the work to a guy like this vid & they air hammer all the way to the crank journals..... yes, there are great shops w/ excellent tech's and mech's , but........ its gonna cost a very larger price.
I have used them in a pinch , but they do not last long. They let a small amount of water go past the rubber and block port over time. This often rusts the block/freeze plug bore, which makes the engine un repairable. I have had to deal with this a few times. Expansion plug get used, and forgotten, resulted in the engine block having to be replaced.
That sucks, i might have one leaking in the trans. Anybody know if a 350tbi has one in the trans? Btw if the freeze plug on the passenger side leaks, just scrap the truck, or ls swap it. Pain in the diqk to do without pulling the motor.
Hey what's up man hey do you think that will work for a 05 Toyota Tundra 4.7 because I put a block heater on it and I block it or didn't work and then I need to put the freeze playback on and it's leaking a little bit I flushed everything in there like how to flush with a block and a freeze plug butts leak in a little bit do you think I will work how you did it

Real nice to have all of that room. Great job. 98 Silverado not so much. Especially when it is behind the engine mount
Yeah this was one of the easier freeze plug jobs ive done
that helps me out a lot. I dont have room to use a hammer. I like the air hammer idea
I hope you putting sealant around the plug and cleaning the hole with sand paper to get rid of debris.
Doesn't look like it
I wouldn’t bother either since he has obviously damaged the shit out of the bore surface 🤣 but hey it was really fast.

Airhammer. Why don't you use dynamite. If you didn't notice, you gouge the rim or the seat. Good luck with sealing it.
Always works if you are not a gorilla with it. Never had one leak. 100% you can destroy the block if you don't know what you are doing

Nice video brother, Quick question when installing these plugs is their any lip or notch from keeping them from over tapping them inside the block?
So quick question if my freeze plug is bad and leaking will it Diane water right back out when I add water

No, there should never be oil in the water

Sealant I guess
Sealant is known to be a temporary fix
Let professional do the work, stick to your own job,or ask scotty.
DO NOT USE SEALANT UNLESS YOU WANT A CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK IF YOU DONT HAVE SUFFICIENT ANTIFREEZE IN THE SYSTEM
Also you never go on the inside part of the freeze plug always on the outer ring.

all comes down to the engine/chassis you are working on. 3 hrs average? some engines need to be unbolted from the mounts and raised up a few inches
