2/3rd of this episode are week late (sorry, have lots of shit going on right now) -- but I'll try to get my next episode (with my Avengers 2 review) out this weekend! And #162 will hopefully arrive next Friday, as scheduled. Stay tuned! Thanks for watching :-)
Ben Aaron It goes further than that, what if you get a life sentence in prison. You'd be in there for eternity literally and disease that would kill a mortal you'd be miserable. What good is immortality if you can't be happy?
Zombissux Being immortal means you would only spend 20,000 years with the human race before they would go extinct (and someone helps you escape prison) That's a blink of an eye compared to the other 7 Billion years before the Sun engulfs the Earth. I'm sure someone could find a shred of happiness within all that time.
If I were 21 or 22, I would take immortality really quickly. However, I don't know if want to, since my family would all die, and I can't. It would be really lonely. So first 12 years, I wouldn't care, but down the run, I would feel a little ashamed that I would be immortal while my family and friends are all dead. That was some deep thoughts, Jon. I'm glad you asked that.
The Learner By slow I meant that it was too slow, even for a crescendo effect. After the wow factor, I can safely say I overrated Age of Ultron. I'd give it a 8.5/10 now - While not better than the first Avengers movie, it can still hold on its own. I think the movie would benefit if the director went for a more serious tone, similar to The Winter Soldier.
With deep character development, a great villain and one hell of a climax, Avengers: Age of Ultron is a pleasingly entertaining followup to the first film and will give you more than enough memorable moments to walk out with. 9/10
Most complicated movie? Satoshi Kon's "Paprika." A visual masterpiece and a feast for the eyes but the plot and characterization take a back seat to the emphasis on dreams. Found myself needing to watch it multiple times before deciding that this is a movie you just have to accept won't make a lot of sense. 6/10, but DEFINITELY worth checking out.
Gonna be seeing Avengers"Age of Ulrton" this weekend. I'll give you my thoughts by then. Personally, I wouldn't go for immortality, to see my loved ones age and die while I stay the same would be a nightmare for me.
Green Lantern: Definitely not as terrible as its reputation dictates, while the story & many characters seem to meander, Reynolds, the VFX and some action excel, 6/10
Daredevil: The director's cut is a near masterpiece compared to the theatrical cut. Even on it's own, it has darker tones and story, more violence, and good performances. 9/10
having just watched Man from Earth for the third time when it came your moment to rate it I thought: man if he rates it less than awesome I will call it a bull! Frak Man from Earth is right there with less than you need fingers to count. this movie is forever! Awesome review! only cos you said what I wanted to listen of course. (...see what I did there?)
The Man From Earth. No car chases. No explosions. No 'villain'. Little to no back story for most of the characters, that for many movies would be a criticism. No fight scenes with fast cuts! OK, so there is a love interest, and there's a gun...It's brilliant.
yeah... it seems fun ...try watching as the people you love die... passing on to what ever ... while you have to move on...over and over and over.... nooot so fun
As for the poll question, no, who'd truly want to live forever? It must be incredibly lonely and eventually terribly boring. What happens when the world ends? Do you find yourself floating in the void for all eternity?
Thanks for stopping by! Hope you enjoy the back catalog, as I don't upload much anymore. I'm still writing a lot on my Letterboxd profile though... :-D
#PollQuestion Immortality is a difficult subject, would I love to witness the inevitable departure of mankind from this planet? Absolutely. But what if we just don't make it in time? When the world ends, or the space ship I am on gets destroyed, what will happen to me? Will I float in space forever? Though I guess that would be like cryo sleep or something... ... if it means that I don't get sick and wounds heal faster than normal, or maybe I'm even invincible, yes, yes I would choose immortality.
In my opinion Age of Ultron was better than the original, there was more character development, the jokes came thick and fast in the funny scenes but left the serious scenes to be serious. Ultron was done very well, as was Vision. Renner's Hawkeye was the standout performance. 10/10
Green Lantern: Not the worst superhero film ever, but certainly not good. It's tone is confusing and the story seemed rushed at times, but Reynolds was great. 4/10
'The Man In The Yellow Suit' is the villain in this movie? Well damn I guess I have to watch it now that I know that it ties in with The Flash!!! And yes I would choose immortality...
Avengers: Age of Ultron: Whedon does it again! Breathtaking action, enjoyable characters with great chemistry, and the best villain of Phase 2. Hard not to love this film. 10/10
Great Video Jon, The man from earth is absolutely fantastic! Green Lantern: A decent attempt at a classic superhero, nothing exceptional but not horrible as it's reputation. The CGI isn't the worst I've seen. 5/10 The Avengers 2, Age of Ultron: Overall a fun experience. Contains stellar choreography, visuals and characters but suffers from a relatively weak plot. Requires a large suspension of disbelief. 7/10
The "downside" to immortality is almost always "losing the ones you love". It's like why is that a downside? People have to experience that shit when they are mortal. The reality is, grief is temporary. You get over loss. With an immortal life, if you have children that grow old and die...if you live long enough it's a very distinct possibility you literally forget they even existed at some point. Imagine if you were born at the dawn of modern man like 100 ish thousand years ago and you had a family in a normal lifespan and they all died before you were 110 years old. If we say a life time is 100 years. 1000 years is 10 lifetimes. You would have literally lived 1000 lives, think of all the connections you could make in each life time. Even in your normal lifespan, when you hit like 70 or 80...there will be people you had meaningful relationships with you will have forgotten. I can't imagine the human brain is capable of maintaining distinct memories of someone, no matter how meaningful they were to you, that hasn't been in your life for even 1000 years, let alone multiple thousands.
After the wow factor was over, my views changed quite a bit on the movie: I still think it's an awesome movie, but it disappoints because of one reason: Joss Whedon. In the first movie, Joss's style was simply perfect: MCU was still in a light tone, so the movie filled with jokes alongside the action hit the spot. However, after the Winter Soldier set the tone darker with Hydra and the even more comedy influenced Guardians of the Galaxy, Age of Ultron should have gone with the Winter Soldier kind of tone, keeping it action, but still with some jokes and fun parts. The decision to make it more of the same tone made the movie look like it's holding back what it could have been. Remember, the movie is still awesome, but the tone wasn't quite what it should have been. The slow start I mentioned still feels weird to me, it still feels kinda slow and different than the other action scenes, but it's no longer my main problem with the movie. I'm just glad the Infinity War films will have the same directors as Civil War. Age of Ultron: An amazing movie with an unfortunate wrong tone that holds it back from being even better. 9/10
Pacing in this ep is much better the last in which you talked a bit too fast. Thank you Jon. Green lantern: overall an ok film, however it tried too hard in humor ,and Ryan wasn't a good fit for the Hal Jordan incarnation of the hero. Stunning visuals though so a 6/10.
While I love “the man from earth” and I won’t give spoilers, and while I know that movie would of been difficult to find and ending, I wish they didn’t confirm either side
Avengers AOU: While not very groundbreaking or memorable, it was still an excellent popcorn flic and quite enjoyable. Still a good improvement on the first and a must-see for Marvel fans, 8/10
The question is, what kind of immortal do you want to be? The kind that never gets sick and can't die of old age but is still vulnerable and could die from an accident, so eventually you WILL die, at the latest when the sun runs out of fuel, but realistically much, much earlier... Or the kind that will just never die, whatever happens? Because if you choose that, you're also indestructible, which means, that if the earth gets destroyed in a cosmic incident, you'll float in space for eternity. Pretty boring if you ask me... Maybe we're lucky we don't have a choice.
Green Lantern: Is Ryan Reynolds really acting? Even its CGI can't hold up to these days. Interesting creatures from galaxy, but no other thing is memorable, 2/10. The Avengers 2: Unexplained subplot, weakened superpower, childish villain and less impressive action scenes (compared to The Winter Soldier), but still fun to watch,7/10. Greetings from Taiwan. If you are unable to show Chinese onscreen, just type "Peter220". Hope to see your new episode as soon as possible!
***** For me it wasn't memorable at all, but I'd be a dirty liar if I said it wasn't very entertaining for the two hours it lasted. For a popcorn flic, it was good
Are there anymore movies like this? Interview with a vampire was pretty dope too. I just love when the protagonist lives centuries and we see them throughout time, would love to find more movies like that.
of the three movies reviewed man from Earthi is easily the best of the bunch. the author of this piece is Jerome Bixby an author that also wrote probably the greatest of all Twilight Zone episodes called It's a good day. check it out!
I would choose immortality, I'm 18 so this is probably the best shape of me so my body wouldn't be a problem and as the student from The Man from Earth says "What a chance to learn" and I believe that John (in that movie) is right when he says something like "Heaven and hell are made up by priests so they could rule through terror. They save our souls even though we never lost them." so I wouldn't be afraid of never been able to meet the God
True story: I went to the theater one day and didn't know what any of the movies were about that were showing so I picked Tuck Everlasting since it co-starred William Hurt, not realizing it was a tween romance drama. The theater filled to capacity with middle-school aged girls (me, 25 years old, fat, with a rough beard). Not only did the girls to either side of me hog the damn arm rests, they spent the whole movie bitching about the film, constantly spouting: "THAT WASN"T IN THE BOOK, IT DIDN'T HAPPEN THAT WAY". sigh. Decent movie though, 7/10.
D00mM4r1n3 A rough break, especially considering William Hurt is barely in the movie, hah. Do you do that often? Just go to a theater without any plan in mind?
I used to do it a lot, swing by the theater and see what was showing, if nothing interesting then head over to the mall. Saw a lot of good movies that way which I probably would not have seen otherwise, some of them I fondly remember were: "Matando Cabos" (2004) (Mexican dark comedy/action film), "The Claim" (2000) co-starring Milla Jovovich (gold rush drama), and "Changing Lanes" (2002). Unfortunately, in the age of smartphones I now just open up Fandango on my phone to see what is showing. Also, I moved to a different state and where I live now there are no theaters showing foreign, smaller budget or independent films. To some extent digital services have filled the role of blind viewing, picking something out on Netflix or Amazon Prime that I've never seen before can be fun.
D00mM4r1n3 Yeah, I certainly do the latter quite often myself (discovered Changing Lanes just last week myself under the same setup) - but usually don't drive the 30 minutes to the theater unless I know what I'm seeing :)
Daredevil: Not terrible, but every aspect is underwhelming. Poor story, average acting and not many good action sequences, 4/10. Age of Ultron: A good film with very entertaining action sequences and real development for almost all the main characters, only Ultron is disappointing, 8/10
Daredevil: just terrible. The movies' edgy nature out dates it, the characters are bland and the story is super generic. Really the only good thing about this movie are Collin Farrell and Michael Clarke Duncan because they don't take their roles seriously. Also I can see why people are scared of having Affleck as batman. 3/10
Age of Ultron: Funnier than the first one, but occasionally nonsensical. 8/10 Green Lantern: Boring and predictable. Some good visual effects, though. 5/10.
already knew the man from earth - found the age of Adeline cuz of you - though thank you, 2 hours well spent. And better late than never - immortality of cause, if emotions are anything near what is shown in all the different stories...
Green Lantern: A flashy and unremarkable superhero movie with one of the worst villains of the genre. Reynolds has some charisma with Mark Strong easily being the best part of the movie. 4/10
Daredevil: Pretty much a failure on all fronts with the exception of great casting... For the villains. Only slightly entertaining when given no alternatives, 3/10
ok I wouldn't choose immortality but if i could choose to live longer i would, how much longer ? i don't know. if you were immortal and the universe died you would still be there against everything in physics ? so basically impossible, and horrible if you think about it.
+Torkil Hansen (DrebinNr893) I must have got dozens of comments about that every week. But you're literally the first person in two years to actually noticed I completely stopped that :)
Torkil Hansen I think it had to do with a change in lighting... but maybe I just learned to relax more? Also helps that I'm reading from a script... forces me to focus and read.
The man from earth wasnt that good. It would be impossible for anyone to be at so many locations around the world at the times where the important historical figures were. How would he know where to travel to and by what means? Traveling from Europe to China back then would be like traveling to the moon today. Plus, he wouldnt be able to adapt and blend in to their cultures and learn languages so fluently. Yeah, it wan't thought out too well. It sounds like it was just a movie dismissing religion. I'm just glad it was so short and I didnt waste too much time watching it.
"Dismissing?" I feel like it was a core tenant of the a script with a great deal of thought put into the ideas, whereas you are dismissing the entire film based on a perceived plot hole or two?
The Man From Earth proves that with good writing, you don't need a multi-million dollar budget to make a riveting movie. I also give it 9 out of 10
I’ve watched it probably 5 times. And probably will another 5 😂fucccckkkk, that movie did something to meeee
Agreed

Thanks, I think!
I really enjoyed The Man From Earth, it'was an interesting concept, didn't require a lot of proof, and left you with a lot to think about
I'm so glad you decided to review The Man from Earth. One of my all time favorite films ! Big love.
VoodoomanSean Awesome! Please tell your friends :)
Movies have told me that being immortal isn't as great as it sounds.
Ben Grieve Right? Always have to ruin my dreams.
Jogwheel Being immortal would suck. Everyone you know dies, family, friends, significant others.
Zombissux I think I'd get over that feeling after the first Billion people pass away.
Ben Aaron It goes further than that, what if you get a life sentence in prison. You'd be in there for eternity literally and disease that would kill a mortal you'd be miserable. What good is immortality if you can't be happy?

The man from earth recut was brilliant lol!
+Nix Glad you appreciated that!
The movie was also brilliant.
You know they had a kickstarter for a series don't you?
clark terry fan No I did not. It failed, huh?
I don't know. There is a video on youtube about it that was published in 2014
The Man from Earth is Awesome :-)

I'll just give my ratings:
Daredevil: 7/10
Green Lantern: 6/10
Avengers: Age of Ultron: 7/10
Age of Ultron, 7/10, lol, on the Richter scale maybe. That film was a clusterfuck.
Age of Ultron: Besides the slow start, it quickly turns into an amazing movie. 10/10
***** I guess it was important to be slow at the begining. it was just like a "crescendo" with perfect ending.
Age of adaline was suit but the man from earth wins.
With deep character development, a great villain and one hell of a climax, Avengers: Age of Ultron is a pleasingly entertaining followup to the first film and will give you more than enough memorable moments to walk out with. 9/10
An almost 2 hours film where people just talk, that can glue you to the screen. That is a masterpiece:)
Most complicated movie? Satoshi Kon's "Paprika." A visual masterpiece and a feast for the eyes but the plot and characterization take a back seat to the emphasis on dreams. The Avengers 2, Age of Ultron: Overall a fun experience. Contains stellar choreography, visuals and characters but suffers from a relatively weak plot. Requires a large suspension of disbelief. 7/10
The "downside" to immortality is almost always "losing the ones you love". It's like why is that a downside? People have to experience that shit when they are mortal. Its appreciated. .
While I love “the man from earth” and I won’t give spoilers, and while I know that movie would of been difficult to find and ending, I wish they didn’t confirm either side
Avengers: Age of Ultron- While not as good as the first film, Age of Ultron is a fun action flick that should be seen at least once. 7/10
Green Lanturn: a film that could have been much better, but isn't that bad. 5/10
Daredevil: A fun, flawed superhero movie with decent action and acting. 6/10
Age of Ultron: Great if you liked the first Avengers film, amazing if you read the comics, not very good if you didn't either. 7/10
Avengers AOU: While not very groundbreaking or memorable, it was still an excellent popcorn flic and quite enjoyable. Still a good improvement on the first and a must-see for Marvel fans, 8/10
Don't worry too much on things being a tad bit late. We can understand life getting in the way of some things.

Yes I would choose immortality, though I know I would regret it in the future.

Daredevil Directors Cut; pretty strong super hero movie. The restored scenes add a lot more depth to the characters for a good 7/10 movie.

Age of Ultron: Funnier than the first one, but occasionally nonsensical. 8/10
Green Lantern: Boring and predictable. Some good visual effects, though. 5/10.
One minute into this video and already it's is one of my favorite ever. Genius. Bravo monsieur!
I love tuck everlasting 😌
Man from earth is awesome movie
already knew the man from earth - found the age of Adeline cuz of you - though thank you, 2 hours well spent. And better late than never - immortality of cause, if emotions are anything near what is shown in all the different stories...
Jon, could you review the new Cinderella movie?
Green Lantern: A flashy and unremarkable superhero movie with one of the worst villains of the genre. Reynolds has some charisma with Mark Strong easily being the best part of the movie. 4/10
I liked the intro 👍🏻
Daredevil: Pretty much a failure on all fronts with the exception of great casting... For the villains. Only slightly entertaining when given no alternatives, 3/10

EaterofCarpets That was awfully dumb of you.

I wouldn't want to never die but I would take not ageing and dying with in a normal life span.
Yes
ok I wouldn't choose immortality but if i could choose to live longer i would, how much longer ? i don't know. if you were immortal and the universe died you would still be there against everything in physics ? so basically impossible, and horrible if you think about it.
Watch custodian too
Can you be more specific?
@@Jogwheel its a movie similar to man from earth
"The custodian"
@@gudduhero6972 No, I got that. I meant like - which one? There are several movies with that title.
@@Jogwheel i saw that few years ago i will post link if i find it
The highlander ????
i just now noticed, you don't blink as much as you used to XD
+Torkil Hansen (DrebinNr893) I must have got dozens of comments about that every week.
But you're literally the first person in two years to actually noticed I completely stopped that :)
yeah, i remember the literal thousands of comment's going ''OMG THIS GUY BLINKS SO MUCH'' XD
so, how come that stopped? o.O
Torkil Hansen
I think it had to do with a change in lighting... but maybe I just learned to relax more? Also helps that I'm reading from a script... forces me to focus and read.
well, that does leave more room in the comment section for actual commenting. :D
JEROME Bixby.
Wheres is highlander ?
Will john have biological great grandchildren though Will?
SUPER MOVIE !!!!
The trailer looks so bad
The man from earth wasnt that good. It would be impossible for anyone to be at so many locations around the world at the times where the important historical figures were. How would he know where to travel to and by what means? Traveling from Europe to China back then would be like traveling to the moon today. Plus, he wouldnt be able to adapt and blend in to their cultures and learn languages so fluently. Yeah, it wan't thought out too well. It sounds like it was just a movie dismissing religion. I'm just glad it was so short and I didnt waste too much time watching it.
"Dismissing?"
I feel like it was a core tenant of the a script with a great deal of thought put into the ideas, whereas you are dismissing the entire film based on a perceived plot hole or two?
Hey 😂
