    The Pearly-Thinaah semis win against Iwanaga-Nakanishi was a bit of an emotional roller coaster ride...with dramatic ebb and flows throughout. It was a toss-up right till the end as to who would win, with momentum constantly switching between the two pairs. A quality match overall and a thoroughly entertaining watch.
    And these two pairs will meet again today in the Denmark Open quarters 🍿

    - Not surprised to hear Intanon smashed a lot in the semi-final. Even with the older equipment she was smashing at 372 kph. She always had a lot of power.
    - Chou Tien Chen's stamina is absolutely ridiculous. Over 2X the time on court VS Christie and way out of his physical prime, yet he still played as fast as anyone. Insane.
    - The real reason why Vitidsarn and Naroka play such a slow style is because they have the 2 weakest smashes amongst top MS players so playing aggressively isn't viable for them. As far as max, Kodai is around the 405 range and I cannot recall Vitidsarn getting over 400 ever. Whereas people like Lee Zii Jia, Loh Kean Yew, Ginting, and Viktor hit over 450 fairly commonly. That's a big difference.
    - Yep, Tan Ning/Liu Sheng Shu are very strong for WD players. Strong enough for the aggro play to work.
    Overall great breakdown!

    I also like watching Kunlavut vs Kodai, I thought it was a bit unfair of the crowd to start booing and shouting "boring" in the early stages of the match. At least to me it looked like both players really tried to win the point, at least for most of the rallies. In the wc finals I agree that for some rallies it seemed like neither player really tried to win the point, and I also think that can be boring. But there is nothing wrong with a long and somewhat slow rally as long as both players still activly look for a way to score in my opinion.

    Great deep dive review. On VAR I agree it is needed for net calls as a first step. Umpires cannot be expected to call fraction of a second shots/blocks accurately all the time.
    There was an incident in a tournament a year or so ago when a player returned a defensive shot after the shuttle had hit the floor but the umpire did not call the fault. It might even have been Christie again and it was on or near match point. TV replay clearly showed the shuttle had hit the ground so there is a case for VAR there as well.

    I think the Kunlavut vs Kodai match is literally a mind game, more than just a test of physicality.
    Last time in China open in which Kodai won over Kunlavut because Kunlavut wasn’t fit enough and Kodai could smash 4 consecutive points in the first set.
    Then in Arctic open, you could see that a lot of clears and lifts from Kunlavut were really short. It was like Kunlavut telling Kodai “Try smash me then this time and you’ll see what happened” and as a result this time Kodai’s smashes can’t do anything to Kunlavut at all. I think it’s very unique to have a match like this other than a match full of smashes!

    About drift, even in a perfectly closed arena with no air cond, no open doors,
    because of the difference of temperature between the ground and ceiling due to the huge volume,
    air convection will always occur, creating air flows and drift.
    That being said, drift can increased between the beginning of a competition, when the arena is colder (because no audience, few games played, etc)
    and the end of the tournament because the arena got warmer : audience, cameras, players, screens, lights and so on, all generate heat during the week.

    • @BenBeckmanBadminton
      @BenBeckmanBadminton  3 дня назад +2

      Of course, every arena will have its own air currents and flow. It doesn't take much to manipulate a shuttle.

      My opinion is VAR would be okay for net plays with 120 fps cam at least.
      It could be called by referees only, like they do with hawkeye for unseen shuttles.
      And if they are unable to make a decision just replay the point... still better than a bad call which is a double penalty in my opinion.

    I actually quite enjoyed these playing conditions, thought it was one of the better ones this year (India Open was good too iirc). In faster conditions it can just come down to the toss and who gets which end at the end, unless you want to spend so much energy just playing downwards from one end. Also we saw some really nice rallies where defence actually had a chance.

    BWF needs to get more funding. VAR needed indeed. I don't think they have the money for it. They don't have enough money for hawk eye coverages for all courts in 500+ events atm. Prize $ are very low for 100, 300 even 500 events.

  • @TheHi-T

    VAR can be an education tool for club players about technique, what is fair play, & good sportsmanship. At doubles meetups I am seeing arguments about obstructing the opponent's shot. Before the shuttle goes over the net to the opponent's side, the player will wave their racket in the opponent's face as a distraction, dare the opponent to swing the follow through into the player's racket. 2 times, I have seen a racket clash at the net resulting in 1 broken racket each time. I have seen a player jump towards the net like he is blocking a basketball 3-point shot. Then the player verbally mocks the opponent & insists he wins the rally. This is dangerous because after that behavior, the opponent stops showing mercy at the net. It is a shame, because I'd enjoy badminton more if certain people would focus more on improving their skills rather than taking shortcuts. (They also say faults cannot be called because there are no cameras to prove anything they did is illegal).🤦‍♂🤦‍♀

  • @HokKan
    @HokKan 3 дня назад

    I also love Kodai vs Kunlavut matches. They have the longest rallies and make the fewest errors. People don't like it because there are a lot of younger viewers nowadays with a much shorter attention span. They like short form videos and short rallies that end quickly with a smash. They can't appreciate the build up of the game and subtle mental battles that go on between these two players. The other point is, most casual club players are doubles players. They aren't able to understand the subtlety of the physical battles and strategies that occur between Kodai vs Kunlavut matches. As a singles player, I can see the subtle strategic choices in their rallies as the game progresses, and it's very easy for casual doubles player to interpret it as boring clears. It really takes a deeper understanding of the singles game to be able to appreciate their matches, and most viewers are casual doubles players themselves, so it's no surprise that they're incapable of appreciating such subtleties.

    Would definitely like to see VAR (or VAU 😋) in badminton eventually. I know umpires don't make the wrong calls often, but they still do occur and ultimately, at the end of the day...we just want the CORRECT calls to be made.
    There are few worse things than to see injustice take place due to incompetence, basic human error, or god forbid...biasness. Especially when blatantly wrong calls are made in tight matches or during crucial points of the game. Players and fans would then be the losers/aggrieved ones when umpires make clear and obvious mistakes...e.g. players touching the net, double hits, shuttle touching a player's body, etc.
    To me there is no excuse for badminton to NOT adopt VAR, especially when the technology is readily available today and is not too complicated to implement. So let's use it..!!! 💪🏼

    Actually i think the umpire and you are mistaken on the call against Christie. Christie wasn't protesting that he didn't cross over the net, but that he didn't touch the shuttle. If you watch carefully he stops short and pulls back and the shuttle falls on its own. After the call you can hear him protesting "no touch!" I agree that VAR should be part of the game. Doesn't make any sense not to, given our technology these days. Look at how tennis has evolved, don't even need linesmen anymore.

    • @BenBeckmanBadminton
      @BenBeckmanBadminton  3 дня назад

      I think Christie said that because that's the most common fault in that situation, so he was assuming that's why he was being faulted. What he was being faulted for was having his racket cross over the net. You can hit the shuttle on your side and follow through over, but you can't have your racket cross to your opponents side for any other reason. Christie's racket did cross the net and not whilst playing a shot, so therefore, it's a fault.

I don't know how far those talks have gone, or if they are still being had. If they are, I'm sure their tech could be extended to a VAR system for the net. I actually am surprised that you think chou has a more rally based game. For me he always had a lethal attack and a very good pace in his shots and rhythm of movement. Never would take him for a passive player. His matches in the previous years, in the Olympics even and this year's tournaments prove this be true too

      He does have those skills but I feel he is too passive when playing from the front, especially. He does use big rear court shots but then will try some double action at the net or play it from lower than he could. Maybe I could have worded it better, but where I feel CTC is passive is more from the front court

    Hahaha....VAR issue again. At whose cost will it go too? We got to be honest and humble with ourselves; did he really not know his racket cross over the net without making contact with the shuttle? Former Danish doubles player Casten Mogensen caught the shuttle with his hand, the Malaysian players saw it, the Umpire was asleep, line judge could not see as Casten back was in that direction and best of all Casten himself did not own up! Do you need VAR also for that? What and why players today are not honest and humble, I am not implying all players are like that. Could it be the price money at stake? Could it be their association teaching them, you don't need to be honest and humble, the Umpire, service & line judges shall decide, not you. Your job is to play and win. Back in the 70's, the winning check was 1,000 English pounds for the All England. No arguments, no big screen replay, certainly no VAR needed. It was just simple honesty and humility. They were there as competitors and win with pride and honesty, that's it. 20 years before the 70's there was no prize money even, yet everyone play with the same attitude. So, the question is, human problem or prize money problem?

      It’s not that simple. Not every situation is 100% certain or within the player’s knowledge. If you think everything is clear cut, you haven’t played enough badminton not at the this level. It’s not player’s job to call fault. It’s the umpire’s job.

      @@AgentJ2007 Hahaha,,,,with 55 years wielding the racket and still on-going, I do say I know what I am talking about. How long have you been playing, if I may ask? What level is that? - $ level that's all. I am talking about humility and honesty, not about whose job to call fault. In our group we teach the younger players by example of leadership through honesty and humility. If a shot lands close to the line and we are not certain, we immediately accept it as in, no arguments whatsoever. No drama, no VAR needed. Simple honesty.

      @@ongkimchoon7383 well, we are talking about playing at a professional international level not your local evening friendly matches. He' talking about situations like Christie's. There is no way the player could have known whether his racket had cross over to the other side of the set, not when it's by a small margin. Other situations where shuttle just brushes the player's clothing or hair. Like I said before, in these exceptional circumstances, there is no way player could definitely know whether he faulted or not.
