  • Pricing for Commercial Photo Shoots can be a mysterious and dark art, and usually takes experience to master. But before you can figure out what to charge, there is another hurdle you must jump through. It all starts with the creative brief which the client expects you to decode and analyse to fully understand the photography they require from you.

After many years of people trying to tell me which body or which lens I simply have to have to take photographs, it is so refreshing to see someone who seems to care a bit more about the art and craft of being a good car (or indeed any) photographer. I'm loving the vids, easy to watch easy to follow, and very good advice and information.
Please keep up the great work, and I look forward to all future offerings.
    Thanks

Hi John. I really appreciate your comment because it is exactly my purpose for making this channel! So it's especially grateful that my message rings true to the viewers. I think it's the difference between a full-time RUclipsr vs a full time photographer so happens to make RUclips videos.

When get situation ok, I'd love to see a specific episode to the motion photography. How to spin wheel to be realistic as possible and other basic stuff. I tried it before, but it never came good in my opinion.

I am loving your channel, thank you so much for all of your videos so far. I have wasted so many hours and days, and stress trying to figure out how to price every job I get. so much time that could go on my photography.

Hey man love your videos, could you make one on how to put together a 'vision board/concept" pitch to companies for a shoot. most likely automotive commercial. :)

Good idea. I may do one later about making a "treatment" which is the industry term for a document a photographer makes to present to a client about how they would approach a potential job.

Great video Mike! Thanks a lot for it and can't wait to see the next one with numbers! Btw that Peugeot motion vectors from the brief looked a bit wrong to me but the wheels are spinning ok ;) Just wondering if that kind of issues is OK for the client? Will they notice that this blur doesn't look realistic?

Oh yeah it happens all the time. It could be photographer's OR client's decision and we'll never know who made these choices. Luckily, only other photographer (a relatively tiny group of people) would ever notice these things!

I'm a photographer who's been offered a commercial job with a major brand. Any insights on pricing for roughly 3 final images for full copyright ownership?

Do you still have passion for photography since you started doing commercial photography? Do you think it's worth getting into if you find the subject matter less than exciting? (Cars, merchandise, and buildings for example.) I enjoy nature and portrait photography but I am learning commercial photography is a feasible option to make a living.

Yes, absolutely! There are definitely easier ways to make $ so the passion is essential to be a pro shooter

In one of your video you say a photographer isn't necessarly a retoucher and you leave that to other people, so, when you were talking about model, hairstyling, make-up, wardrobe, and all that stuff, i was like, wait, why i have to find/hire those people? isn't my job, i'm a photographer not an agent. Can you clearify that out please? you would do those stuff yourself or ask one of your assistent, member of your team to do it? And if so, you would have to hire a realy good ones otherwise it will make you look bad as well, because, it was your job to find and hire those people, if they mess up by not showing at all or messing up on the job day on scene, is gonna be on you. I have lots of experience as a wedding photographer, and a few times i had recommended to my customers, this and that , and most of the time, it blew in my face because i recommended them, and from then on, i said, no more, it's customers task to bring extra people for different kind of services, my job is just photography and retouching and that's it. Yeah of course i will take care of renting hotel rooms and plan flight tickets and everything is necessary but not other people doing other services, in case they blew it, i wouldn't look bad in my customer eyes. Thanks. Your videos are awesome by the way, lots of insight and informations. Thank you.

Clients expect me to hire all the necessary people to make the shoot happen and get the images done right. That includes hair/makeup/stylists/assistants/models/etc.... If I don't personally do it, someone in my team does. It is NOT the client's responsibility as they pay me to produce the job. Based on your previous bad experience, I can only guess you hired the wrong people or just had bad luck. Just need to meet more people who are professional and easy to work with. This is not only how I do it but every photographer I know is responsible for building their team. Thanks for your question.
