Wimbledon 2003 was where it all started. A Mallorcan boy played his first grand slam match and 2 weeks later a youngster from Basel won his first grand slam title.
I won a case of beer betting on that youngster from Basel winning the tournament. I remember when I told the guy I bet, the name of my pick. He replied "Roger Federer??? Who the hell is that?" I said, I dunno, I read in the paper he was good on grass and has a great forehand.
Only 3 years after this he will play his first Wimbledon final. Only 5 years after this he will win his first Wimbledon title. 15 years after this he will play a iconic Wimbledon SF against Djokovic. 16 years after this he will play a iconic Wimbledon SF against Federer. 19 years after this he will play his last Wimbledon match beating Fritz in a 5th set TB. Hats off to Rafa.
Who could believe, on this day of 2003, that this young guy with tons of things to improve in his game will finally become one of the greatest of all tennis History ? Incredible.
I remember being here at this match when I was in Year 8 , my favourite player of all time is Paradorn so little did I know his opponent would be one of the greatest of all time to do it :) He may be the king of clay but his biggest moment will always be his first Wimbledon against Federer :D
Also the 2019 US Open and 2022 AO Open wins against Medvedev were incredible moments too for Nadal, especially the 2022 AO Final. I will never forget that match.
honestly, over 20 years he didn't change that much. his forehand/serve preparations became a bit different, but i think what he changed the most, and for the best, was addressing his play style and playing a few meters behind the baseline, also when he is returning
Rafa had all the fundamentals. he developed quickly across the next two to three years. fabulous to see such a young player not being afraid to come in - so many players were /are, because most players have excellent passing shots.
this young boy stole my heart right from the first time i saw him on court at the age of his 18 in Monte Carlo, became his huge fan since 2005 what a long journey 🤗
I'm sure Rafa was already playing the Pros in Spain at this point. The video of Rafa beating Moya. He's already creative and the best spins on the planet.
We cannot compare anymore with Rafa but since Alcaraz is also from Spain, I personally feel Alcaraz to be more strong in almost all aspects ( other than being consistent ) than rafa at his age
It's Srichaphan, not Srichapan and i feel he kinda showed the blueprint there on how to beat Nadal, would have given an older Nadal a lot of troubles as well.
I think Paradon was on the top of his career but Rafa was just the beginner. Great to see this match and appreciate how he become one of the legendary tennis players. He was only 16 years old in 2003.
Sampras had technically signed up for Wimby 2003.......but realised that he was way out of shape and form to make an eventual appearance and finally withdrew as the 2003 tournament began. Of the big 3 of the last 25 year generation(Fed,Rafa and Djoko).....only Fed got the chance to pit his skills against a true grass court player-Sampras. By 2003....the other elite serve and volleyers -Edberg,Mac and Becker..... were long gone.....paving the way for fluff like Hewiit(who Becker beat in his penultimate match in 1999),Phillipoussis(who lost to Edberg at the Ozzie in 1995) and Roddick(who lost to Sampras at the US Open in 2002)....to offer the opposition for Fed and co for the rest of the 00s at Wimby.
The Snooty English commentator saying cheeky things like he could do better and being quite dismissive of young Rafa … BBC better at picking commentators and pundits who don’t seem so overtly stuck up nowadays … nice lack of commercialisation around the court and the kit . A more innocent time. The shorts pulling, the passion and the grunting are all present this early from Rafa but his preparation into the serve is very different - the short way up to the power position … 🎾
Rafa's volleying is downright awful........pretty much sets the bar for the lack of serve and volleying talent in the last 23 years on tour. On grass, peak Becker,Edberg and Sampras would have posed serious problems for pseudo volleyers like Fed.....and glued to the baseline players in the mold of Nole' and Rafa.

Almost everyone, including Nadal's dad, thought he should give up and retire from that last match, but no. Nadal is something else than giving up.
2018 SF is a hurting loss... They closed the roof , that gave advantage to Nole..

Thank you for sharing the vid!!! This is GOLD my friends!
Watching Rafa rush the net is interesting.
Thanks for posting this for the tennis nerds.
Paradorn's game looking great here, the early '00s was his peak period. Nice to see him getting some air time on the Wimby channel.
He was not yet busy with his hairs' fixing habit when prepping for service (only with the underwear issue which never changed in 23 years 😂)
This was the same year that Alcaraz was born! Crazy that they played competitive atp matches against each other.. 🎾😅
His game was very different. His strokes and his preparation. He changed a lot in his career

Srichapan had a bomb serve!! 😱
Therefore he had a very unorthodox movement, with a proper motion on his serve he would have gained consistency and reducing physical problems.
This is amazing. Rafa looks so young!
Remember this! What a career Rafas had, its been a pleasure following it! Good Luck Raffa!!❤
How fitting is it that Nadal’s Wimbledon debut was also Federer’s first Wimbledon victory?
It is a tale for the ages my friend. And we lived it. And still live it!

This Nadal guy seems okay. Feels like he might win a slam or two

Actually, this is old match 😅He is 38 now, has won 22 slams and is considered as one of the greatest players ever
Yeah, maybe one or two. I think he might struggle at Roland Garros though.

Paradorn plays an attacking style, something that is lacking in todays generation that only sinner does it well.
Weird to see this version of Rafa's forehand
Just to think that Alcaraz was just born While this amazing athlete was starting his amazing career 😍😭❤️
Rafa in that baggy shirt is hillarious.
the grunt was already there!!! 🤣🤣
I know he won't get much attention here but Srichapan was a lovely player to watch. I think this was the year he upset Agassi.

is anyone else annoyed by the breathing into the mic from the commentators in between points?? 🤣
I’m annoyed by everything they do; I wish they would just let the players play
Srichapan was #9 ATP.
We want 2015 Final full match please Wimbledon ! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Nadal without his serving ritual....
Got me as a surprise. I thought he always did the ritual
