This episode marks the time frame I started watching OSW. Undeniably, you and the boys are my favourite RUclipsrs. Thanks for the years of content Jay, and a congrats on the 1,000,000 views for this episode!
I watched this show live while suffering with Mumps. The fever made me hallucinate that Rocco Rock was in my room asking me why he hadn't been booked. Apparently I told him "Nah man, you died, they don't book dead guys no more"
The reason there's so much interference is so some of the lesser-established ECW guys can get a payday. There was still a bit of a drought in terms of wrestling outside the WWE and so the booking reflects the mindset of "Maybe we can squeeze this guy into the show, his kid needs an operation" - that kind of thing. This was almost a fucking benefit show for Monday Night War refugees, tbh.
Latino Heat was coming in hot off a heel turn and was in the middle of a deeply intense feud with Rey Mysterio, whereas Benoit had just been transferred over to Smackdown days earlier. When informed that he would be putting his real-life best friend over clean, Guerrero was not happy. He believed that suffering a clean loss on a major pay-per-view would seriously hurt his momentum, especially considering he was booked to lose repeatedly to Mysterio as well. So, going into the match, he was angry. Then he became even more agitated when the fans in the Hammerstein Ballroom elected to spend most of their time aiming derogatory chants towards the WWE invaders who were situated in the balcony. Adding to his woes, Eddie suffered a cut to the nose during one of the match's early exchanges and had to take a breather to regain his composure.
@Bravoler It's not even that. Eddie was starting to lose his ability keep up the pace he had a year ago, never mind when he was at the top of the mountain in 2004 at Mania 20. Eddie was heading back to a dark place around that time.
Through all the ups and downs, Balls will always be remembered, and It's a tragedy he was taken from us so early. Hope you've been doing well, and I wish you and your family a fantastic 2021.
Wait, you’re balls’ wife? Seriously? That’s awesome! I love balls. My condolences on your tragic loss. I have a couple questions, if it’s okay. First, did you always know it was a work? If not, how long did it take him to smarten you up?
The way they have Matt in Jeff"s shadow just bc Matt was too busy setting upJeff's hugh risk moves to be able to do his own moves more, Matt likely would have been let go im a few years anyways, Bc Vince hates the "sll guys" and would have not pushed Matt to the main event as V1 so he woukd have went stale someday. Though Matt is probably just as good as Jeff, He needed a realistic rivalry for fans to get behind and Edge and Matt's real life issue sure did the trick. (Personally, I couldn't see him having a proper fued bsck then, Even vs Kane seemed out of place-ish)

I was there, This was the loudest , and most insane crowd I've seen. Only surpassed by Jets vs Colts 03. In Jersey. But that was at least 50K fans. And not even wrestling. Cant imagine it happening again.
The reason JBL is ripping on Lance Storm was while Lance was training in OVW, one of the developmental wrestlers asked him about backstage bullying after they are called up to the main roster. Lance mentioned said something about staying away from JBL for that reason, and Kevin Thorne then later told JBL about it
So he was pissed Lance Storm was looking out for a kid by telling the truth about JBL. Good for Lance. Maybe if JBL were a better guy like Lance Storm he wouldn't have the shit reputation he apparently freaks out about when it gets mentioned.
The actual story behind Guerrero was he didn't feel like he should have lost the match because he had just recently turned heel at the time. He felt it was gonna kill the turn to have him lose at this PPV. On top of that he was pissed at the fan chants and how they were basically ignoring the match.
@@guyincognito5706 You're gonna have to re-read it, brother. He said it wasn't the win or loss itself, but what it would do to the heat behind his character - which is a very real concern in wrestling (just ask anyone who's been buried by Cena in the past decade or so) - so it's not a mark thing to worry about. It's like a pet parrot - yeah they're loud and annoying but most of the time that means they're happy and engaged. Or it used to, at least. Not anymore. Chanting is different now.
I think you can see just by looking at Eddie that he's suffering from serious physical problems, from a serious lack of energy. Looks like a serious heart problem manifesting, not someone who has the physical energy but lacks the will to perform. (Especially given Eddie's character, commitment and deep respect for Benoit.)

Paul Heyman is a genius, but people seem to have rose tinted glasses about the fact he knowingly was not paying many of his performers. That Joey Styles shoot on Mike Awesome sickened me then and it bothers me even more now. Definitely made me lose some respect for the man.
You would think he paid them by now hopefully. .he's a millionaire and I would if I had done that. He's a wrestling god creative wise though no doubt. I have no idea why he's not writing shows for wwe or feuds at least.
Joey Styles is a good announcer (IMO he's a bit overrated by a lot of people) but every time I watch this show and listen to his shoot on Mike Awesome it just pisses me off. Of course Awesome made the jump, he wasn't getting paid, and the fact that Styles just bitterly goes after him shows me he's more of a Heyman ass kisser than an ECW loyalist. Even RVD, a true ECW loyalist, stopped showing up when he wasn't getting paid. Much like Jay and V1 I totally side with Mike Awesome on this (RIP), and I feel like Joey Styles should have gotten punched right in the mouth for wishing death on him, talk about petty.
I imagine Joey was just pissed over Awesome's categoric departure of the sinking ship. That said, you don't have to stay by the sinking ship, Awesome didn't want to miss out on a big wage just out of sheer bravado, he probably couldn't, even. I still like Joey's work but that's one of the most unjustifiable grudges ever.
ECW One Night Stand was a great show, I enjoyed it. The Tanaka/Awesome match stole the whole show and it was amazing. The '06 one was meh, since it was a kickoff of WWECW. The rest afterwards, never cared for them.
If you have any doubt the Steve Austin is one of the biggest wrestlers ever, just listen to the reaction from a crowd that wants to hate everything WWF when Stone Cold's music hits 1:29:37
Hearing the retrospective of Jericho so makes me wonder what they think of painmaker emo face paint Jericho Le Champion long hair tights bandana around the neck Jericho. Wouldn't mind a brucie bonus AEW review.
Jay was talking about Sabu wrestling Douglas (as in Shane Douglas), and for a split second I thought there was an ECW guy I'd never heard of named Wrestlin' Douglas. And now I'm just sad that he's not real. Just wanted to share. RIP Wrestlin' Douglas. You never existed but you're still my favorite ECW wrestler.
Not sure if someone else said this, but after Heyman says “two words for ya” then says “Matt Freaking Hardy!” Edge does his spit take but then turns to the other raw crusaders and goes “that was three words!” He holds up three fingers for a moment but right before the camera cuts away he does the v1 sign. Always thought that was the perfect comeback!
My favorite part was when Spike Dudley came out in his old ECW attire and helped his brothers out. In the old ECW, Spike was always at odds with his Dudley brethren and to see them together as one in the old school tiedye and not the camo was cool for me.
It should be noted that this is mike awesome's last match (at least everything indicates this was his last ever match). He'd been retired for a while before this match and came back for the pay day, So might as well go balls out. Plus I'd rather see a match of this quality once in a while then randy orton being boring 4 days a week.
If I recall, Awesome was also the first Alliance member to win a WWF belt... Granted, it was the Hardcore title so it pretty much meant nothing in the grand scheme of things...
Remember liking this show a lot at the time. Actually think Vince and WWE deserve credit for the amount of freedom they gave ECW on this night anyway. I loved the back and fourth between the WWE and ECW guys it really added to the story of the night. You guys make a good point about Awesome when he left for WCW. I agree with you. Just that maybe he should have dropped the title before leaving.
Lads this was the first OSW review I watched, I remember playing the destiny beta while I watched this on the side and I still come back to this review every now and then. The p-p-v itself and the hilarious shite you lot come out with make it one of my favourite videos ever.
Tanaka and Awesome stole the show, Rhyno vs Sabu was a good one too, Benoit/Guerrero should've been great, but it's quite obvious something was going on between the two behind the scenes, Kind of eerie to watch those two knowing they're both gone. All in all this PPV was one of the best in recent memory.
The thing with Eddie/Benoit, is that, Eddie recently turned heel, so a loss in ECW's One Night Stand would ruin his push in his own mindset, and he was pissed off that he was booked to lose, so Benoit and Eddie had a disagreement that night
How the fuck did anybody NOT enjoy that Mike Awesome v Masato Tanaka match????? Maybe it's just because I've never enjoyed playing to the audience in a match, but I thought it was fucking SICK
This brings back memories of when me and my mates would sit watching PPV events at 1 in the morning and having a great laugh. Just listening to your accents (Irish) is what really brings it back cause I understand the bant much more
It broke my heart when I read Eddie’s lips. He was dying before our very eyes and I think he knew it. In retrospect, I am super pissed at Benoit for seemingly only caring about the poor quality of the match and not realizing that there was something terribly wrong with his best friend.
@@tangoblue I mean, Benoit was dying in a way too. His brain was a ticking time bomb. And for anyone who doesn't understand the dangers of CTE, Junior Seau was a famous football player, who blew his brains out after retiring in his 40s from CTE. Jovan Belcher, a mid 20s football player, killed his wife and baby daughter, then went to the football training camp and shot himself in the parking lot. CTE fucks people up, and you see this trend of suicide, and also getting close family involved. That's why I don't watch football anymore, and I can't stand real head chairshots.
I love the facts Jay brings to each episode and I assume Jay likes the facts to. So here's a little After the Fact Fact. Rumor has it that Eddie was pissed during his match with Benoit because he had to do the job clean to him. Eddie felt it hurts his character to tap out clean so soon after his heel turn. Then to add to it the fans started chanting at the Crusaders and then Eddie got cut over his nose. It was also said that Benoit and Eddie had words after the match and Eddie left immediately. Did a little research because I really enjoy all the tid bits you put in to your shows. Cheers fellas.
Justin Credible somehow looks 1000x better in this ppv than the Shane Douglas one literally 2 days before lol. It’s so weird how much difference in just a little effort put into your clothes and all can do and how much better it can make u look ooo.
I think the whole Styles getting on Awesome's case could have been perfect thing for the heel crusaders to react to like "Yeah Awesome shame on you for going for a Million Dollar deal, you should've stayed and starved"

That Eddie/Benoit match was sad. Benoit was visibly disappointed in Eddie while Eddie looked disappointed in himself while he was outside the ring because he was blown out. Sad, I guess the heart problems were there in the background for a while.
Im an independant wrestler and I can tell you for a fact chair shots to the head are not instant concussions. There is a specific way to take them. Watch how tanaka curls up before taking the chair, or how he falls with the blow on the second one. Watch shane mcmahon take a chair to the head too. They are banned becuase its a risk but as raven said in a shoot "they aren't unsafe people just dont know how to do them safely". Same with piledrivers. when guys who are just swinging the chair like a baseball bat its unsafe, but if you do it properly then its not horrible
Angle said in a shoot interview that Eddie was having cardio issues the last half of year before he died which is why Eddie is having issues in this match. Clearly his heart was slowly starting to give him major issues which is really a shame. It’s too bad he couldn’t do testing or something to help him with this. It could’ve saved his life possibly
Unfortunately it's the massive downside to heavy steroid use. Dynamite Kid, Davey Boy Smith, Guerrero, and countless other men who were 5'7-5'11 and trying to make money in "the land of the Giants".... Pushing their bodies beyond natural limits, the heart can't take it. Truly tragic. With HHH running the show, I don't see a huge change for natural physiques coming anytime soon.
I worked for a Sheraton at the time Mike Awesome was That 70's Guy. WCW came from time-to-time & would stay there, which gave me chances to meet many of them. I didn't get to meet Awesome, but I couldn't help but laughing when I saw him from the distance walking through the lobby to the elevators with his long wavy hair & 70's Guy clothes & shades on. Thing is, they were here for Nitro, which wasn't until the next evening, so I assume he was wearing the ugly get-up because he had to appear for a signing or something to promote the show.
The line of the night was JBL saying about Mike Awesome "His ass is so big he can fit "I'm actually pretty good sometimes most of the time" ... he can fit all those words on there" JBL was GOLDEN on this show
I love that last bit where Paul says it clearly... that this isn't WCW, this isn't Raw, this isn't Smackdown, hell this ain't even WWE THIS MY FRIENDS IS EC FUCKING W!!!!

Hearing the retrospective of Jericho so makes me wonder what they think of painmaker emo face paint Jericho Le Champion long hair tights bandana around the neck Jericho. Wouldn't mind a brucie bonus AEW review.
I just want him to put some fucking pants on. Please, Jericho. Embrace tights once more. The dad-body heat is old hat.

48:42 probably one of my favorite bits of commentary from JBL, "That's talent."
“Ol Lenny Skinnerd” pops me every time
I got the dvd of this show and enter sandman is on it. Myb it's a difference between usa and uk dvd versions.
Plus I'd rather see a match of this quality once in a while then randy orton being boring 4 days a week.
fiveways if your still here mate I’m guessing you’ll be all in?
@@Neithan02 yea if youre arguing in a comment section. Give me Mike awesome over randy all day as a viewing fan
If I recall, Awesome was also the first Alliance member to win a WWF belt... Granted, it was the Hardcore title so it pretty much meant nothing in the grand scheme of things...
That receipt from Stevie Richards was so satisfying. JBL got concussed from that chair shot too I believe
A better comeback for Kurt would have been "You're confusing me with your mothers"
Or I am not a mirror
Could listen to V1's JBL impression all day.
Would you say

NevermindHDx He’s fun to watch!
Fozzy is actually a great band that is more successful than ever before.
Benoit looked like he told Eddie not to wrestle that night.
A lot of people have said Eddie was not himself the last year or so of his life. It's not surprising that his matches were suffering as a result.
The thing with Eddie/Benoit, is that, Eddie recently turned heel, so a loss in ECW's One Night Stand would ruin his push in his own mindset, and he was pissed off that he was booked to lose, so Benoit and Eddie had a disagreement that night

Didn't he kill himself a couple years after this?
Yeah. That line has been uncomfortable ever since.
Karma can't even get more "Awesome" than that if he tried. Then died.
He did it less than 2 years after this ppv
@Mike Keller Almost certainly
Seeing that moment with the Enter Sandman singalong was special. I can’t believe the network didn’t license those rights for the event.
This brings back memories of when me and my mates would sit watching PPV events at 1 in the morning and having a great laugh. Just listening to your accents (Irish) is what really brings it back cause I understand the bant much more

Poor Eddie you can tell his health was an issue. I miss him
It broke my heart when I read Eddie’s lips.

Just a bunch of guys getting wasted and taking silly bumps. It's not aged well but I find this PPV so fucking entertaining
Very interesting.
Mike Awesome was freaking Awesome. RIP
The 619 was awesome when I was 12. But man, I could go the rest of my life without seeing it.

That Eddie/Benoit match was sad. Benoit was visibly disappointed in Eddie while Eddie looked disappointed in himself while he was outside the ring because he was blown out. Sad, I guess the heart problems were there in the background for a while.

Then after this Tracy Smother's challenged JBL to a fight.
I would have loved to have seen that fight.
Knockout prone JBL would def lose to Smothers. Who apparently is not to be fucked with.
Well Bart Gunn ko'ed him in the brawl for all.
The only thing better than watching JBL getting flattened is the convulsions he does seconds later
I loved JBL's rich cowboy gimmick, but whenever I think of his irl bullying, I thank god I'm not a wrestler, because I would have New Jack'd him.
Smothers was the real deal. He'd hurt Mr. All Bark and No Bite JBL! ngl I'd love to see it.
StunningSteve so what about the chair shot Jericho gave Benoit during their amazing ladder match was that..relatively safe
Sixteen years on, and Mysterio is still going. The longevity of him, fucked knees and all.
The line of the night was JBL saying about Mike Awesome "His ass is so big he can fit "I'm actually pretty good sometimes most of the time" ... he can fit all those words on there"
JBL was GOLDEN on this show
JBL has alot of nerve given that he had the same body type at the time
"I shoulda taken the money!"
