What I use frequently is the task manager (SEARCH + ESC). It's very useful to identify the cause of a slowdown. Some apps (typically the Gallery app) sometimes don't free up space properly and can take a lot of memory if you don't restart your Chromebook often.
This worked instantly! I knew I needed to do some of this, but having been force-fed the other guys thru school & work, I didn't know the details. Thanks!!
This helped a whole lot! thank you so much! I had to get rid of all my downloaded pictures and put them in the cloud. No words can express how thankful I am! I was honestly about to get rid of my computer but this has prevented me from doing so.
Thank you :). I put my files onto my external hard drive and then did the powerwash, so far the Chromebook runs faster. also got around to cleaning up some Chrome extensions that I don't use anymore.
thanks for mentioning the power wash. After about 2.5 years my Samsung Pro had become almost unusably sluggish. But after doing the reset/power wash it is snappy again

Great Video but one mistake. The " Changing Download Directory " option has changed in Chrome OS 79. It is not that simple anymore. Comments please....
Open Chrome. Click on the menu button (3 vertical dots on the far right) and go down to Settings. In the blue "Search Settings" section, type "downloads" without the quotes. Scroll down until you see the "Downloads" section. In "Location", click the "Change" button on the right side. Navigate to the Downloads folder on Google Drive, click the "Open" button. You should now be back in "Settings." The location for your downloads should now say, "Google Drive > My Drive > Downloads".

Timo, try accessing the default downloads file location from the Chrome browser settings not the OS settings. Open up the settings in the browser search "downloads" and it will take you right to the option that Joe is talking about in the video. Hope this helps. Just did it, too!
@@johndriggers6876 it kinda defeats the purpose of the downloads folder. I presume any files in that folder is one you want offline. Though you can probably change it to a memory card if you have it.

I use KineMaster on my Chromebook and when exporting my videos to be shared to RUclips they were ending up in my “read only” files where I was unable to delete them. They were eating up my storage so much that I ended up having to do a power wash to get my storage back. How can I avoid this in the future? Any advice would be appreciated.

@@johndriggers6876 I just assumed it didn't allow you to Download new Android apps, in terms of security I imagine it's not really any better before or after security updates stop. You probably need physical access and an exploit with one of those USB plug-and hack devices
RyanWake bradtelle -it just stops updating Chrome OS. Everything still works. At some point app updates might not load if they require a newer version of the OS. If you still want to use hardware that old when problems do develop, you can open it up and remove the screw that blocks wiping and reburning the firmware and redo the machine as a pure Linux laptop. At that point it really moving from rational to stubborn though. Horses for courses as they say.

Yes. Basically, a PowerWash is the same as deleting all the data from the internal drive, reformatting it to receive a new Chrome OS installation, installs Chrome OS. Once finished, your Chromebook will start just like a brand new Chromebook. You'll have to sign into a network and supply your Google credentials. Then, it will download all the apps and extensions you had in your previous installation of Chrome OS. This means you will need to re-install and configure any Linux distro you had installed. Those are outside the normal Chrome OS environment and have to be installed in "Developer Mode." Does that help?

Yes--it isn't the hardware that needs a VPN, it's your communications, payments, etc over the web. I use Nord. works great via the android app or via a chrome extension--don't run both. I prefer the android app. I use Nord because it works well to protect me and also helps me with geo-blocked content (I travel back and forth between the US and Australia so it keeps my tv streaming subscriptions working no matter where I am.). And I use Chrome, Mac OS X, IOS, iPadOS and Android devices and it works on all of them. It's also easy to setup and use.
Exactly what John said! Been using Nord for a little over 2 years now; can't believe I ever went without it. VPNs provide security, encryption, and let you get around country restrictions on content as a bonus. I also move between countries often, and it's invaluable in all the ways mentioned above.
What f....ing annoys me is Chromeunboxed banged on for that long about how they never slow down and a year after purchasing one I'm now watching videos on how to stop it being a slow piece of s...t.

I just turned mine off the other day because it wasn't running well and it got much better when I turned it back on.

don't you lose most of your extension settings when you powerwash and re-sync?
Depends. Some apps like U block origin allows you to upload your settings to the cloud.

Good info, he just goes over it too quickly and the screen doesn't go over all the steps.
