What's wrong with Zynaptiq Vocoder (for me)

  • The highly anticipated vocoder release is upon us, and yet I am disappointed by it. This video explores the sadness invoked by such a deflating experience. We do also take a quick look at the differences between traditional analog vocoding and the new techniques employed by Zynaptiq (partly revived from old Prosoniq DSP libraries)

"I'm not gonna say the expander is a bad addition but... I struggle" lmfao. orange sounds amazing to me and i am loving it but i do agree it doesn't really expose enough parameters especially on the vocoder page. good that you demonstrated the old version had far better sound in the traces page. i think you underrate the freeze function it's pretty awesome when you play with it. i do have qualms with it but in practice i think it's a very musical sounding effect when you are using it on a track. zynaptiq makes very, very high quality sounding stuff in my experience.

I love the sound it produces. I brought it and I'm very happy with the results

Weird, I got a message from YT saying you left another message about not being able to see the video, it wouldn't play? I hope it did eventually play for you, I can't think of any reason why YT would block it!

@@cinningbao I had connection problems. Nothing wrong with your video which was very watchable. I like the simplicity of the interface. Stops me from spending hours playing around with it and speeds up my workflow. I can get exactly what I want from it very quickly but I probably don't go into this sort of stuff as much as you do. And it seems like you have a lot of experience and deep knowledge of Vocoding so I get how you would find it disappointing

I get what you're saying. I suppose they wanted to 1. not make it too complicated for the average user 2. finally get that thing released. It still sounds absolutely fantastic in my opinion. Let's hope that some day (in another ten years maybe? 😅) there will be an updated version that lets us play with all the parameters of these cool algorithms. Thanks for this great demo!

Thanks :) Yeah, I know I have to accept that it is what it is.. I was just hooping for a few more exposed parameters to break the sound with! And they have essentially removed the Filterbank Reverb and replaced it with a lesser version called 'Traces'. I was hoping they would expand it!!

I bought it in early access. I don't use many of the additional modules, so I can't complain about those. But you're right about the algorithms. They need more algorithm-specific control panels. Perhaps they plan to add them? Denis is incredibly quick to respond to any inquiries, and I have faith in them. Maybe it's just a matter of time until they add them? Also, LPC-80 warm sounds almost as good as the DigiTech Talker, which is the LPC vocoding king, and has been since 1997 😉

I didn't realise the DTTalker was an LPC-based bit of kit, very interesting! You're right though, I don't see any messages about the vocoder discord, which could be interesting!
I got the emails with the message but the video comment seems to have been removed, which is a bit odd.
email me at @gmail.com with discord details (unless this message gets deleted!)

Ngl the thing that bothers me the most about Orange Vocoder 4 is the lack of videos showing off the capabilities it offers, showing off to what degree it can be used especially in heavy bass music production or any sort of experimental sound designing. Not even their very own RUclips channel has any tutorials on it, only small demonstrations at conventions which barely scratch the surface. And since Orange Vocoder 4 is a quite complicated and versatile plug-in those demonstrations really don’t do it any justice and hence aren’t enough to convince me to buy it just yet. And I knooooow it was literally just released 10 days ago but come on… isn’t that like the best time to have people make tutorials on it and give it the social media presence it deserves? I’m hoping for Nasko to review it in any of his upcoming livestreams as he always does such a great job with that kinda stuff and almost always gets me to buy whatever he showcases. They should hire him.
EDIT: Yes there’s like a 20 minute long demonstration from 2018 that goes a little deeper into the matter but it’s also pretty much just your basic vocoder stuff that’s rather easy to figure out on your own. Zynaptiq plug-ins are used by so many bass producers (mainly thanks to Pitchmap), so the tutorials should focus on that too imo.

Yeah to be honest I only made this to counter all the expected "IT'S FRICKIN' AWESOME" marketing and biased reviewers sent a free copy, but the tsunami never happened.
I might do a "well we should take a proper look at what _is_ possible with it" vid to provide a balanced opinion

@@william2001a Haha, I haven't seen any of those yet! I'm wondering how popular an exclusively-complaining-plugin-consumer might be.. I'm pretty good at complaining, but it isn't a very good marketing tactic form a product perspective, so I'm unlikely to 'go big'.. that doesn't mean there isn't a space for it though.
I'll have to download a demo (haven't even looked if there's one available) to see how much I don't like

I tried this and hated it. I found it overly complicated and it didn't sound very good.
