- Let's be real, diving throughout winter in England can be uninspiring at times. Not a lot of daylight, cold water and a general lack of fish. However if you know where to look you can still get a fantastic feed. I try looking for flatfish like plaice, flounder & sole on this day but didn't have any joy. As a consolation prize, I did find a bag full of delicious scallops.

i really like that you diced the scallops, more caramelised surface and you get to use the butter/oil as base for pasta with all the goodness in it.. nicely done

I still have few scallops left from november dive. Very nice with pasta or i just cook them in the shell with some butter n garlic (my fav way to make them) ye would have been nice some flaties in the net fresh fish always best
A few plaice would have capped it off nicely. Next season!

Solstice, my friend.
Equinoxes - from the word equal - regarding the equal lengths of days and nights,
While solstices are the two times of year when it’s either the longest day (summer solstice, occurring in June 21st), or the longest night (which is the winter solstice which is at December 21th, exactly 6 months after or before the summer solstice). The equinoxes are exactly in between those, at March 21st and September 21st.
The scallops pasta is looking great, here in Israel all kinds of clams are protected so we can only get them frozen or from fishing boats that fish outside Israeli waters, but the latter is quite rare and mostly available in Tel Aviv’s market, so I guess I’ll have to visit England to be able to taste them, but anyway - cheers !
By the way - in the Southern Hemisphere the summer and winter’s solstices are the opposite of the northern hemisphere.

Winter diving in New England is rough, but I really enjoy the solitude and the opportunity to work on my technique. I just bought a new dive computer and took it for a spin last weekend (02/19/22). I was immediately impressed with how much structure it added to my dives and I look forward to pushing my limits safely with it. Water here was 5° with 5m vis but real calm when the wind is out if the SSE (which it was). No fish yet, but we're on temperature time now and it only goes up from here. Anyway, great video as always and I loved the pasta recipe. Might add a tablespoon of butter and some parmesan cheese, but all in all it was a good vid that looked great on the big cam and I really appreciate the content you produce! Keep up the excellent work and good luck in 2022!

Perfect timing I landed in Edinburgh 2 days ago from the west coast of Canada. I'm heading to the west coast of Scotland (oben) to dive for scallops. I'll definitely try that pasta dish. Looking forward to warm Scottish waters lol. Back home in the winter it goes down to 5°c water temp.

Video idea? I don't spear fish, but I'd enjoy a video talking about the various licenses you require in the various places you fish as well as the approximate costs. Just an idea... thanks again for sharing this sport and world with us.
Great suggestion! However the information can change year to year and I'd hate to give someone outdated information and then have them get in trouble for doing the wrong thing. Never paid much for licenses in any country I've spearfished, they seem to be pretty reasonable.

You went out looking for flat fish Daniel, I live across The Channel and here, in winter, the flat fish are certainly not at their best : thin and scrawny and not very tasty. So your scallops were as they say very serendipitous.

You have to try it, you can even substitute lobster meat in there too which you don’t have any shortage of! These were decent size but I’ve found scallops 170mm across in Scotland. Testing out some new masks from Omer 👌
Yeah our SA scallops are nowhere near as big as the Tasmanian or English ones unfortunately. Still taste good though:)

There certainly is. Plenty in the northern parts but in the south it normally comes in February.

To be honest, for a motorcycle a big north face duffel bag would do the job nicely. Waterproof and robust.

Unfortunately this brand is discontinued. I had to track one down second hand to get my hands on it. Epsealon & Beuchat make similar floats but I’ve not used them.

Yum! Dedication at its best diving in that cold. Its getting colder and (some) fish also getting more scarce here in Malta. I'm curious Dan do you keep your wedding ring on when wearing your dive gloves? I take it off as I figure it would get a bit stuck when taking the gloves off.
I always wear my ring diving unless it is in three finger mittens. Then it can get painful with them squishing together.

They are only prototype test masks but I find the orange tinted mask the nicest to use. Very similar to the Technisub micro mask.

Hi! What thickness wetsuit do you use? And what thickness would you recommend for 13/14°c degrees?
I use a 7mm most of the time but sometimes a 5mm. For those temps I’d be in the 7mm.

I was wondering how far from shore you feel comfortable to swim before reaching to your spot?
I have swam 2.5km from shore before. You want to be fit and take plenty of water for that sort of thing.

Not at all! I was taking the spear tip cover off and stashing it in my glove wrist. I use short 3-4cm bits of old speargun band to stop me impaling myself if I fall over or my float crashes into me with swell.
