"You will always move the trim in the direction you hold the stick to keep it straight and level" - Thanks for this, never heard an easier explanation :) You should start writing manuals for remote control manufacturers :D

Lee, thanks yet another gem of a video. Very helpful. For RC pilots, trimming does have the effect of making the model seem more stable, ie it goes where you want it when hands off. Aerodynamically though, stability is determined by where the centre of gravity is in relation to the centre of lift. Trimming on a full sized aircraft is used to relieve the control load necessary to maintain a selected attitude. It’s the same for RC - if you have to hold the stick off centre to maintain a selected flight condition, you can use the trims to return the stick to centre. So you can also use the trims to select and maintain any flight attitude. For example you could trim into a climb or descent for the approach to land, in combination with an appropriate change in power.

That was very useful thanks especially the idea of moving the trim tab in the same direction of compensatory stick movement. Before seeing your video the elevator trim control was confusing to me ie was down down to the bottom of the radio .. now I know it's not, it's the same as stick direction.

I've got a couple planes now. Dart 250G that crashed about 20 times before I finally figured it (using a KOPILOT but not INAV), a Ranger 2000 running INAV, a Drift running INAV, and now a AR Wing Pro (started with a Kopilot because for the Dart 250G it was way more forgiving than INAV. The plan is to go to INAV on the AR Wing Pro after I get it trimmed in manual mode using the Kopilot. I think I've watched about every video out there by you and Andrew Newton and few others on setting up planes in manual mode and doing the trimming - that is where the I'm not 100% clear. There's good information in those videos, but the introduction a flight controller creates a disconnect for me in the start to end finish of getting a plane trimmed out and ready to go for INAV. So here is my understanding of the process. (I'm going to use the AR Wing Pro as example)
1). On the Servo arm, put the linkage in the 3rd hole from the end of the servo arm
    2) Attach the linkage to the control horn (there's only one hole)
    3) adjust the linkage until there is 1.5 to 2mm of reflex
    4) Adjusting the throws (disconnect #1, no mixing on the radio when you plan to use a flight controller). I'm going to go ahead and put the FC in the plane
5)Adjusting the throws in INAV. Get a ruler and move the control surfaces to the max positions using the radio. use a ruler to measure the max. Reduce the weight in INAV to get the throws to less than 12mm in each direction, per the manual
    6) Fly the plane in manual mode. Adjust the trims using the radio until the plane flies level when not touching the sticks. Land, measure the control surfaces.
    7) turn the radio off, adjust the control horns mechanically until the control surfaces are at the same position when plane was trimmed using the radio
8), Turn the radio back on, remove all of the trims from the radio and fly again in manual mode to validate if it works. If it still flies well in manual mode, you're good to go, if not repeat steps 6,7, and 8
    9) Fly the plane in stabilized mode and enable Servo Auto trim (provided the plane flies well, move to the next step)
10). Connect the plane to the configurator, review outputs tab. If you you see any of the servo middle channel positions outside of 1450 to 1550, you have some more work to do to setup the plane mechanically. Provided all of your values are inside the 1450 to 1550, move to the next step
    11) . Fly the plane again and go flip the autotune switch and keep flying and then fly some more. Right before landing, come out of autotune, use the stick commands to save the settings.

Setting up the model well mechanically is key to flying any model (even one with a stabiliser/flight controller). I cover all of the basic steps here - ruclips.net/video/Vaq4Jt0XzOU/видео.html - then there is the setup of the flight control system on top of that. I have an entire series for beginners on INAV and Kopilot.
Every pilot has their own series of steps that works for them but they are variations on a theme. Once you get a setup that works for you - stick with it and have fun! Happy flying!

When setting up servos in inav is it ok to change center position from 1500 to say 1575 to center the control horn at 90 degrees. I had one servo that was just off a bit from 90 degrees with the servo and this was the one way I could fix it.

Have you trimmed the model. Sounds like you need a few clicks of roll left trim to counter the roll tenancies the model has... If the model has a stabiliser then it sounds like the level needs recalibrating too. Best of luck

Lee, is there any way to assign different trims to a switch? I've often noticed moving from manual to stabilized mode or some other mix combo perturbs the trim requiring a lot of tweaking and testing.

I know this question is off topic to this video. What I'm trying to do with opentx is to make a mix for main gear door and gear. Flick gear down, door opens fully, pauses while gear lowers, then raises half closed. Reverse when selecting gear up. Too add to it, I'm trying to use trainer switch to activate the main gear door as air break. Pull and it fully lowers, without gear. Release and it raises. Too simulate the main gear of a F111C aardvark Any suggestions and help, much appreciated thankyou and hello from New Zealand. I feel more than open for you to share this as a video. If I can get it to work, I'll like you make mix, so if gear is down, and I pull air brake switch (trainer) gear stays fully closed, but spoilerons fully raise Which are mixed with taileron mixing.

Lee, once you have gotten your servos to 90 degrees and have trimmed out your plane using the trims and then saved them to the subtrim menu does that then send out the right values to make the fc happy? (Like 1500 for center stick) or do you have to dial everything perfectly mechanically and never ever touch the trims? How else do you get your servos to 90 etc and still make the fc happy? If you could clarify these points please. Cheers mate. Keep up the good work.

I'm thinking about the Tango 2 because now it has an external bay for multiprotocol module. You know? So I don't know if I get it or the micro module to use with my Taranis. 😬
