This is great :) I got a Korean RG350DX last week for 70 eur and I plan on modding the hell out of it as well, but I gotta admit I didn't think about staining the fretboard. Looking forward to see the finished product :D
Wow man even though the difference is very less, the black stain really makes the guitar look much better! I have an Ibanez and i'm surely gonna stain its fretboard too! Great video, waiting eagerly for the next
sweet video, however i feel like i should add to the oil process; it is not recommended to leave the oil unattended for so long. usually in guitar building the oil is applied, and once it gets tacky, the excess oil is removed. then apply multiple coats this way. the reasoning behind it is that the oils isnt going to dry up and leave marks which would be visible.
I didn't do thick coats, the first coat (shown in video) soaked in very well and I took off any excess immediatley. Coat 2 and 3 were very light and again, no excess that tried! It worked all fine, the neck is just as smooth as on my Kiesel!
I think you could have gotten the stain to absorb more if you sanded the fretboard and used naptha or something to suck all the oils in the fretboard out, either way, it looks alot better, great work!
Don't mess around with a file on bridge screws, look for stainless steel M3 set screws on eBay. They come on a variety of lengths so it's dead easy to get the right length screw even if you have a tight neck radius.
I asked my local guitar shop and I was told that it's not possible to get the screws. And I think on Thomann there is only 1 variant available but I don't know the lenght. Anyways, got them short for free now ;)
Hi, maybe you can try RM Pickups from Czech Republic , handwound, RM Custom Alnico model is extraordinary bridge pickup, for neck i am using Classic Neck model and the clarity of that pickup is unbelievable...
Hopefully the paint is going to be good, I have some experience with spraying because I do scale modelling but I've never sprayed a guitar. Will be cool for you guys, if the result is good at my first try you'll know how it goes! I didn't set a precise budget, however my goal is to keep the costs as low as possible while creating a really cool, good feeling, playing and sounding guitar! I've roughly calculated and I'll end up just under 400€ for the entire project (guitar + new pickups and stuff like paint or tung oil)

If the frets needed to be filed to remove possible sharp edges, would you say it's something doable at home as well or is it a task that demands a luthier and "special" tools? I put together a Les Paul years ago, from an Amazon kit, and it was so much fun; now you're making me wanna try with a cheap Ibz :D Looking forward to see if you plan to address the loose neck pocket and how!
If you want nice rounded edges some decent files are recommended. If all you need is to take off some sharp edges a simple nail file will do just fine (the soft kind that is, not metal files).
Cheap?? That's a very nice Ibanez. Better than mine. I got it at pawn shop for $45 it's an RG 170. But neck feels nice. I'm putting new pickups. I do not like the Ibanez sound.
Better to sand the neck and then just let the oil in your skin create the best neck surface ever. I suggest that you don't oil it or add anything but playing it.
Wood should always have some kind of treatment in my eyes. The fretboard on guitars (if they're not glossy like on some Fenders) are always oiled so the wood doesn't dry out and causes cracks and deformation. Trust me, a tung-oiled guitar neck is the best thing in the world of instruments ;)

Rubbing alcohol and a qtip works good for removing stain from inlays and binding 👍👍

You can buy shorter screws, they arent easy to find but they exist ;)
Other option is to shim the Neck, this forces you to raise the Saddles.

Filing frets at home is totally doable in my opinion! I did treat some fret ends on my acoustic guitar a while ago and it's super easy in fact!

Start with 120 grit on the neck. It's not worth all the extra time to save an extra mm or two of wood.

No, it was a lot of sanding but there is no noticeable amount of wood taken away! :)

Buy some quality graphite saddles and you're golden.
