I really want a standard schnauzer but I'm 63. What I'm concerned about is meeting their exercise needs. I help take care of my son's 20lb dog who likes to explore the backyard everyday. I have nearly an acre enclosed. He's fine with that. My question is would a standard schnauzer get enough exercise on a daily basis going in the fenced in yard a couple of times daily? I like the standard because it is a vigilant watch dog and even has a little bit of protection potential compared to the mini and they appear to be playful and interactive. I loved playing with my dachshund nearly daily. He loved to "fight" and would never let go of the rope toy even if you lifted him off the ground. I got good exercise myself but since I am an caretaker of an adult autistic child that doesn't like to take walks with me I need to mostly exercise a dog in my very larger fenced in backyard. It would be only occasional walks here in the country side. Any advice? I am also considering Airedales, Lhasa Apso, German pinschers and mini Schnauzers. I have experience with many breeds, large and small, but not a single one of them ever made a good watch dog that would alert you to someone outside of your home including my fun loving dachshund.
I have a 15 plus-year-old mini schnauzer who loves the snow even though he is declining he loves to go outside in the winter for his walks and to his business
He is adorable. My wife and I recently adopted a black standard Schnauzer from the APL. He is a little over a year old. He loves the snow. A very entertaining and intelligent breed. Our dog ran around the living room and the kitchen barking at thunder. Your dog is funny reacting to the snow. Dogs are man's best friend. We laugh at the things our dog does. I am training him and it takes a lot of patience. Best wishes to you and your family. Enjoy your pet or family member.
Rich Bok Thank you! Yes I agree that dogs are mans best friend. Ours is definitely a family member. The first year took a lot of patience. They are smart and a bit stubborn. I love hearing your dog ran around barking at thunder. They are so funny and a joy to watch. Their faces are the cutest. Take care.
@@carlapeterson3683 I will and best wishes to you and your family everyday. Stay healthy during this virus crisis. At least our dogs provide us with a positive attitude and a lot of fun and love.
This is absolutely hilarious. Kinda how I feel stepping out in the first snow except I know better than to eat it. My niece has a mini schnauzer named Penny and I adore her. They're such loving dogs. Thanks for sharing. Happy holidays 🐾🦃🐾 ⛄🐾🦌🐾🎄
Aaww. He's adorable and has a beautiful black coat. I've been trying to get a schnauzer for months now but it's so hard to get one in my area. And if you do find them, they charge you an arm and a leg. In my area you can find all kinds of bully breeds everywhere. I like bully breeds, but I have fallen in love with the schnauzers and won't give up until I find one. Soon I hope.
Carmen Vazquez Thank you! Standard Schnauzers are really hard to find. We actually went out of state to pick ours up and some can cost a lot of money. I’m not sure why they are so hard to find. I hope you find one soon. They are such a smart, loyal breed.
@@carlapeterson3683 I finally found one. A mini schnauzer, same thing, smaller package I say. But yes. I do have to go out of state to get her in a month. Got her at a good price and only about 2hrs from me, so not bad. Can't wait to bring her home.
I read in the comments that you had a mini before? We had a mini for 15 years. Are standards pretty much like bigger minis, or are they different? Thanks!
In my opinion, they seem to be a bit different. It could be because he is quite a bit larger. Our mini was like a small human where "Cash" isn't. He is just an awesome dog. He definitely doesn't bark as much and has a ton more energy. He is more social. He loves to go exploring, camping, fishing, swimming, running and over all, way more active. It could just be due to each dogs personality. I have enjoyed having both.
Scar Face The size is one difference. My dog weighs about 58lbs and I believe a giant male is around 95lbs. I also think the standard has a little more energy and has a very strong temperament. They are the original standard. I don’t really know too much more about the differences. I use to have a mini schnauzer and My standard is strong willed. He was a little harder to train.
Scar Face yes I believe that is because they are the original breed. That is good news for me. Unfortunately my mini only lived to be 8. Hoping to have a lot longer time with my standard.
Heather Miller I know the struggle is real when trying to find a breeder for standards. We found ours in Idaho. My husband did a lot of searching. Wish I had an answer. Good luck in your search.
Guillermo Diaz Texas would be too hot for my schnauzer. ☀️ I bet your dog would love the snow ( probably would act the same way if he/she got the chance).

It’s got to be scary especially when you can’t see the steps or drop offs, etc. we always made paths and little side shoots so they wouldn’t go on the path - for our dogs on first snows. Standards are the purest form of schnauzers they often have less health issues and have less of the negative tendancies associated with miniatures
