  • You know those super-cheap, just-good-enough 858D hot air rework stations you see online? The ones that are like... $38? They work really well for what they are, but they're also wired in a way that could really mess you up. But fixing that is a snap, and so I did, and now I'm showing you how to wire an 858 hot air rework station so it doesn't have the potential to cause you some serious bodily harm.
    You only need the tools you probably already own if you even know what a Hot Air Rework Station is. Seriously, this is so easy to do! It will prevent potential dangers down the road.

    For anyone using these units, check the actually continuity from from the plug itself and dont rely on the colors, my unit has BLUE as the hot and brown as the neutral. My unit came wired properly aside from poor grounding points.

    3:05 almost. its completely the other way around. blue is neutral and brown is hot (brown, black and gray are hot in a three phase household, so everywhere in germany basically).

    Let me say, I think your idea to make the Station safer is good, but at least in Germany, the brown line is Phase (or live, however you want to call it), and the blue line in neutral.
    So in theory, the fuse was placed in the right line. But in practice, at least the european plug can be turned around, so here in Germany you would always have a 50 50 Chance of having the fuse in live or neutral (and yep, I know... The EU plug is Kind of silly for that reasons...)

      I remembered the color-code from my time in Germany, but I had forgotten the plugs could just be spun around.

    • @bufordmaddogtannen
      @bufordmaddogtannen Год назад

      There is another problem that is not mentioned in this video: the live and neutral wires in the molded plug are also wired incorrectly as they used brown for neutral and blue for the live.

    • @Nick-ov8ed
      @Nick-ov8ed Год назад +1

      Does that mean I don't have to do a "safety"mod with european plug system ?

    • @bufordmaddogtannen
      @bufordmaddogtannen Год назад +1

      @@Nick-ov8ed it depends. If the plug is reversible (e.g. German schuko, Italian plug) it's probably better to keep the fuse on one wire and the switch on the other one. At least you will have a 50% chance to cut the live wire.

      Thumps up ! Beter to check the earth connection because the chinease worker leave the painting sometimes under the contact/scew/bolt/nut. Not a really unusual dangerous mistake ! Easy to check and repair.

    I got a 858 recently from AE and the internals got reworked such that everything is now on the board itself at the front and its just 3 wires from the C13 receptacle running across the entire massive void of an enclosure, and the fuse is now on the hot side so yay! I still opened it for a sanity check anyways since I could have just probed on the receptacle and fuse.

    Actually the colour coding is correct for most european countries .I have one with a UK 3 pin plug and the fuse is where it should be on the brown live wire and the blue is neutral

    saw this and its price is very cheap to buy. is it worth getting or too risky to use?

    Also the case needs to be connected to mains earth. They earth the front panel, but not the black metallic shell. You would need a separate wire spliced from earth bolted to the case where the transformer is installed.

    Brown is hot, blue is neutral. If is was wired like that, there was no issue with your device.

    Why didn't you just reverse the wires in the plug?

    • @CowbopBeBoy
      @CowbopBeBoy  Год назад

      Didn't want to reverse the polarity, although it almost certainly wouldn't make any difference whatsoever and this is the easiest solution, so easy I didn't even consider it.

    Is there a way to test/verify that the wiring for the fuse is wrong and that I need to follow this guide to rewire my unit?

    • @CowbopBeBoy
      @CowbopBeBoy  Год назад +3

      If you have a multimeter you can do a continuity test from the plug’s neutral to the fuse.

      In germany we buy legal devices only when the switch cut both power lines.
      The german version must be a lot different to the US or GB Version.
      A GB-Version ...
      ... only a DUDE changed it with a cheap EU plug type is absolute illegal.
      You maybe find these in very smal at self importing shops. But he can lose his container at the custom.
      Or later in the shop a officer stop immediatly the sellig and ask for the bills of the buyer
      (to see if he get the adresse from the buyer).

    If you're staying it's trying to kill you, what fault path do you have in mind and why do you suggest a fuse that will happily pass several amperes is going to save you, when it only takes milliamperes to kill you?
    Also what is everyone in half the rest of the world aupposed to do where plugs are reversible or the phase/neutral wiring is essentially random?

    • @CowbopBeBoy
      @CowbopBeBoy  10 месяцев назад

      First part, it only takes a few milliamps across your heart to kill you, which is pretty unlikely to happen. Second part, I don't have an answer because this wiring is being suggested for US users.

      @@CowbopBeBoy Assumed hand-hand or hand-foot resistance of human body is around 1kOhm (can be higher), which results in a very lethal current of 120mA/230mA. An adequate protection mechanism is a fault current detector (difference or Earth leakage) which has thresholds in tens of mA and trigger times in tens of milliseconds. Not a 10A fuse. Which you still want in order to prevent possible fires from L-N shorts inside the device, which is also why they deemed it didn't matter whether the fuse ends up in L or N path, and it is indeed permissible to do it like this in EU and China.
      I do think moving the fuse to L is good when there's no RCD, but i also can't think of a situation when it's going to save you from death by electrocution.

    In Germany 3:04 we wire legal the power cord ...
    ... after the powercord you have to find a switch ...
    ... and it must switch off both power lines simultainously off an on. (Dude)
    Ok you dont know it what is legal in germany and some other EU countrys.
    All other switch constructions with moveable devices are absolute illegal.
    There are some rules for the maxium force to pull the power cord out of the device,
    the PVC isolation have to meet some general tules and
    there must be a test label at the cord and
    see the labels at the power plug to.
    What a shame I can turn the plug 180 degree wrong into the wall plug. In britanin possible.
    No problem because the device have to met still safty regulation to prevent stupid experts to kill themself.
    Your fuse in germany will be inspected very critical ! Maybe the custom send these devices back to the seller.
    The EU device have a fuse container. If I lift the fuse out the power is disconntcted or it is very difficult to reach metal with a baby finger. Often the test is made with a smal calibrated metal pice (like a scredriver).
    Can a child reach the life power and a screwdriver at the nearly pluged in power plug in the UK wall plug ?
    Impossible in germany when the plug and the wall plug is legal.
    If the EU boarder control find a container with illegal electric devices ...
    ... it is not allowed to enter the EU when a EU-plug type is mounted.
    I boarder custom officer in every EU country works legal, they store the china packet for two weeks (or some weeks) and send you a letter tell you that you are the importer off illegal devices.
    After the time it is send back to the origin country and you can see if you get the money back.
    You are not informed with the new parcel ID code. Well good luck.
    Is it the sellers mistake ?
    No it was the mistage of the buyer.
    He is the importer of illegal electronic/electric devices into the EU territory.
    The device has to wear signs = ce and Rohs and sometimes additional safty test institut logo.
    And a manual in the english (or the in the language of the buyer country) must be included.
    The device have to meet actual safty laws or entering into EU is refused.
    The manufacturer or seller have to add a page with the EU law confirmation declaration by the manfucaturer with the registration number.
    Ok it is often impossible to control every container and every parcel.
    But is is still illegal. Sometimes I find these devices in smal shops. But it is not allowed to sell these.
    A device with a single contact switch is absolut illegal.

      Mei was ist das für ein Wortsalat. Nicht Mal die Rechtschreibung kriegst du hin.
      Schau kurz so gut wie alle Geräte die du hast, auch nach allen Normen abgenommene, haben einpolige Schalter.
      Lichtschalter führt man nicht mehr einpolig aus, schon gar nicht in der Neutralleiter, weil sich sonst einer beim Wechseln der Glühbirne tödlich umbringen kann. Für verschlossene Geräte mit Schutzklasse gibt es dagegen keine entsprechende Vorschrift.
