The PVC jerkin was still in use on Royal Observer Corps "cold weather" posts up until the ROC was stood down on 30th September 1991. I'll confess that I found them a bit stiff and impractical and suspect that the leather version would have been more effective.

How effective were the gas masks? Assuming you put it on quickly enough when the gas hit, how effective were they at actually protecting you from something like chlorine?
