History Matter Collaboration - Did Britain Abandon her European Allies in 1940?
In this Special Episode of Matthew's Military Moments I explore the reasons which show that Britain didn't abandon her European Allies after the Dunkirk Evacuations.
This video is part of a collaboration with over 15 other channels all of whom have videos which are here:

Hello, For those of you who have been waiting, here it is. Part 2 of my videos of the British Soldier on the Western Front, a part of my British Infantryman series. This particular video covers the uniform and equipment changes from 1915 - 1918 but doesn't cover all of the Anti-Gas Equipment changes as that is an entire topic of its own. Hello, With the Great War being a promenant feature in history, I believed that it was worth a video. The issue is the fact that during the war, there were so many changes to the uniform and equipment that I could not do it justice in one video. So, in this first part of the two episodes on WW1, I will be covering the WW1 Tommy on the Western Front in 1914. Thank you to Battlefield History TV (...

How effective were the gas masks? Assuming you put it on quickly enough when the gas hit, how effective were they at actually protecting you from something like chlorine?

Odd that they called the Lee Enfield "short magazine", when it had double the capacity of most bolt action rifles at the time.

@sebastijanglozinic8630 the short bit refers to the shortened barrel, as it's predecessor had a longer barrel. The magazine refers to the fact that it's magazine fed.

A FANTASTIC presentation of what American military often terms “junk on the bunk” Obviously you laid out 3x the amount of gear that a typical Tommy wore in 1944. But I am curious as to how strict the soldiers carry inventory was monitored in the British Expeditionary Force?

The PVC jerkin was still in use on Royal Observer Corps "cold weather" posts up until the ROC was stood down on 30th September 1991. I'll confess that I found them a bit stiff and impractical and suspect that the leather version would have been more effective.

The DLI, the forefather of the Light Infantry. My Battlion was renamed 7th Battlion Light Infantry ( Durham) in 1989 before I joined the regulars. It's now called the 8th Battlion the Rifles. My great grandfather's unit was virtually wiped out during the Somme and there was only a few men left including my great grandfather and they were transferred to the DLI to replace their losses. He held them with such affection and respect for the rest of his life.

To be fair, the Prince Albert's Somerset LI, Duke of Cornwall's LI, King's Own Yorkshire LI, King's Shropshire LI, and Durham LI, together formed the lineage of the Light Infantry when formed in 1968

Excellent overview, Matthew. In a previous life (the 80s), I did an impression of a British soldier (51st Highland Division, 42nd Black Watch) so this brings back a lot of memories.

Mens participation in war represents men's weakness and fawning to female gynocentrism. The communists destroy men with feminism and the conservatives destroy men with chivalry.

Even in the darkest hours of the war the United kingdom still had taken in her allies soilders to the safety of her own shores. She cloved, armed, and housed the Free armes and navies of the French, Polish, Belgians, Dutch, Greeks, Czechoslovakians, Yugoslavians, Norwegians, Danish, Luxembourgers, Albanian, and even the royal Italian armies. And remember that the British empire freed most of western Europe long before the channel islands

Poland got a bill after the war for the equipment which the Polish soldiers have used to defend Britains freedom and after the war they were not allowed to participate in the victory parade.

Yes, there is that, I decided not to include it as I thought it was outside of the focus time frame of Post-Dunkirk. However, that does open up space for a pt.2 arguing the opposing view.
