I simply cannot hear enough of this guy. Surely the primo tenore of the new milennium. He has a lovely instrument, good technique with a precise vocal focus, and he looks good too. But it is the sound and the musicianship. Bravo!!!
Someone pointed out that he is a ‘spinto’ tenor. If you look it up, they say spinto tenors have deeper voices than lyric tenors. I never realized there are different types of tenor voices. I think Kaufman is fantastic!

Because of the strong sense of worship in both composition and general message here, it is very easy to 'overindulge' when singing it - to make it too heavy, dramatise too much, etc. Jonas gets it just right - exultant, jubilant, yet simple enough to remain fairly unadorned. Thanks for posting.

I really love his high rising notes at the end of the first two phrases in the front part of the second verse. His technique is like no other. This version is really my favorite for Christmas or anytime.

Magnificent. Bel canto, super phrasing and phenominal breathing. He keeps the tension lines so tight that I sat on the edge of my chair listening to him.The end was superb!! Majestic!
In 1999 Kaufmann was just 30 years old and had been singing professionaly for only 7 years (his debut in small roles was in 1992) so he obviously could have NOT been considered by the British magazine CD Classic among the top classical singers of the 20th century. I have just heard Bjorling's rendition of "O Helga Natt" and, again, I think Kaufmann's technique is much better. We could spend the rest of the year here arguing about this, but hey, let's enjoy our favorite singers and stop wasting our time as to which singer was or is better. You like Bjorling better, fine. Be happy with your liking. But I will undoubtly continue to like Kaufmann much, much better. Happy new year!

But had he been old enough, I don't think he would have had a chance - competing with Caruso, Gigli, Callas, Bjørling, Tebaldi, Flagstad, Nilsson, L. Price, de Stefano, Corelli, Bergonzi, Pavarotti.... No chance! But he is good looking - like Corelli was. And that is important today. :-)
Comparing Bjorling Technically with Kaufmann, is one of the most ridiculous things I have heard in my life. Liking Kaufmann's sound more is another thing, that's fine, but technically speaking, Bjorling was amongst the greatest of all time, right there with Volpi, Caruso, etc.
I'm sorry, but if you rank any tenor as superior to Bjoerling on the basis of technique, you have a problem. If nothing else, (and there was much else of course) Bjoerling is one tenor who can be said to have had a perfect technique. Perfect?, Yes, perfect. He made the transition from boy soprano to operatic tenor seamlessly. And sang numerous operatic role -along with frequent recitals concerts and radio and television appearances, season after season every season until his untimely death, at age 49.

i am a new convert to kaufmann. this is so beautiful. i found it by accident and have subscribed to your site. who knows what other gems await me. thank you for this one.
Said it before, and I'll say it again. This performance is the absolute best I've ever heard. PERFECT orchestrations. PERFECT vocal. Yes. Kaufmann doesn't have much of a squillo. But that doesn't matter. This performance wouldn't sound the way it does if a standard tenor sang it. The almost baritonal sound and darker tone of his voice, IMHO, really add to the quality of this performance. (He is a spinto tenor after all.) The vocals are warm and natural -- at least to my ear. But his vocal, coupled with the simple yet powerful orchestration that builds from verse to chorus. The subtle use of the timpani to augment the tutti climax gets me every time, beginning with a slight tremolo and building from there. It is just beautiful. I've heard nothing better. And I've been searching for some time now.
Mister Opera Haha!! I’ve seen Kaufmann in live performance at the Met and Carnegie Hall, in Verdi, Massenet, Wagner. His voice is large and well-focused. Corelli is your idol? That fool with the lisp who couldn’t read a note of music!

This is by far the best version of "O Holy Night" I have ever heard. Perfect vocals. Perfect orchestration. I've heard none better.
Jonas's voice is equalled by the lat great Jussi Bjorling Both divine.
Agree with you there, both magical. Jussi Bjorling forever, Jonas more powerful with additions, Jussi more tender, love both.
In 1999 Kaufmann was just 30 years old and had been singing professionaly for only 7 years (his debut in small roles was in 1992) so he obviously could have NOT been considered by the British magazine CD Classic among the top classical singers of the 20th century. I have just heard Bjorling's rendition of "O Helga Natt" and, again, I think Kaufmann's technique is much better. We could spend the rest of the year here arguing about this, but hey, let's enjoy our favorite singers and stop wasting our time as to which singer was or is better. You like Bjorling better, fine. Be happy with your liking. But I will undoubtly continue to like Kaufmann much, much better. Happy new year!
Happy new year to you too! :-) And: Of course I know that Kaufmann was too young to be considered in that "competition". But had he been old enough, I don't think he would have had a chance - competing with Caruso, Gigli, Callas, Bjørling, Tebaldi, Flagstad, Nilsson, L. Price, de Stefano, Corelli, Bergonzi, Pavarotti.... No chance! But he is good looking - like Corelli was. And that is important today. :-)

Comparing Bjorling Technically with Kaufmann, is one of the most ridiculous things I have heard in my life. Liking Kaufmann's sound more is another thing, that's fine, but technically speaking, Bjorling was amongst the greatest of all time, right there with Volpi, Caruso, etc.
I'm sorry, but if you rank any tenor as superior to Bjoerling on the basis of technique, you have a problem. If nothing else, (and there was much else of course) Bjoerling is one tenor who can be said to have had a perfect technique. Perfect?, Yes, perfect. He made the transition from boy soprano to operatic tenor seamlessly. And sang numerous operatic role -along with frequent recitals concerts and radio and television appearances, season after season every season until his untimely death, at age 49.
I love his voice ♥ That's christmas to me :-)

Said it before, and I'll say it again. This performance is the absolute best I've ever heard. PERFECT orchestrations. PERFECT vocal.
Yes. Kaufmann doesn't have much of a squillo. But that doesn't matter. This performance wouldn't sound the way it does if a standard tenor sang it. The almost baritonal sound and darker tone of his voice, IMHO, really add to the quality of this performance. (He is a spinto tenor after all.) The vocals are warm and natural -- at least to my ear.
But his vocal, coupled with the simple yet powerful orchestration that builds from verse to chorus. The subtle use of the timpani to augment the tutti climax gets me every time, beginning with a slight tremolo and building from there.
It is just beautiful. I've heard nothing better. And I've been searching for some time now.

Mister Opera Haha!! I’ve seen Kaufmann in live performance at the Met and Carnegie Hall, in Verdi, Massenet, Wagner. His voice is large and well-focused. Corelli is your idol? That fool with the lisp who couldn’t read a note of music!

This is a great version, but the clarity, phrasing and sheer beauty of Jussi Bjorling’s recordings I think are the best.
listen to georges thill version. There is a version here on YT. He is much better than Kaufmann
