    this was a very wonderful video. I looking for reviews because i wasn't sure which camera to pick. And I came across this and I was filled with warmth from the sound of the music, beautiful nature and your feelings that you have towards the camera. I was not expecting to come across something so artistic like this and for that you have my full-on support. I hove that you can find happines and love in life.

    I was so happy to see this review. I have two HS 50s that I recently took out after about 2 years in storage. As soon as I put the battery in one and started it up I remembered all the magic I felt when I first bought it. Just a really, really nice camera to use and a zoom to die for!
    I did have a very bad "sticky camera" issue with both of them. After much online research I decided on Goo Be Gone applied with an old tooth brush. This loosens the crud up but to really get it off you need to follow that up almost immediately with hand sanitizer (also on a tooth brush). I was worried about the Goo Be Gone getting into the body but, thankfully, both cameras seem to still work fine.

    • @TheBuddingEngineer
      @TheBuddingEngineer  3 года назад

      That's actually the best way to describe the first time I used mine, too - magic
      I've never heard of Goo Gone, but it sure sounds much safer than what I used: methylated spirit and 99% isopropyl. It seems that degreasers are the only way to get rid of the surface.
      After scrubbing a Pana G1 (which had the sticky coating), I found that the softer it becomes, the easier it is to remove. So I'm planning to treat my HS50 when feels like literal snot. Hope that can help you if you run into anything with this surface.
      And I think it should be safe on the buttons and dials, provided you don't dip the camera in liquid

      For what the on / off switch? Dental floss works well. Good use for the sanitizer because other than that it just makes you sicker

    Just bought one off ebay for £122 to replace my hs30exr that packed in recently due to getting very wet. It went everywhere with me in the 8 years I had it. Apart from photos looking absolutely terrible on a TV, and often losing a fast moving shot due to it refusing to focus, I loved it. I'm hoping the 50 doesn't suffer from the same problems.

    Just bought a 40x 1/2.3" Nikon Coolpix p520 for 20usd. It got me thinking about larger sensors on an equally long lens. Came across one of these locally for $95. I definitely want to pick it up now. Im gonna wait for it to drop. Aint nobody gonna buy it for that price lol. Thanks for the demo. Way cool! Seems way nicer than the Nikon I got.

    Thanks for this excellent review, even after so many years! Just bought myself an HS50 EXR then happen to find your review now, and is amazed by how well it was (or still is) after initial hands-on impressions, when comparing to my other bridge cameras.
    The focus is simply outstanding even to its successor, the newer, all-weather Finepix S1. Nikon P900 has a much longer reach, lens is great too, but its focusing is a lousy joke. I wonder if its afterspring, P950 and P1000 have enough improvement on that or not.
    But too bad the HS50 EXR I got has a pretty awful dial and button response, probably have to either opt it out, if I can't find somewhere to fix it.

    Great review!
    I bought mine right when it was lauched.
    I got rid of the sticky surface with isopropyl alcohol and cotton pads. It took a couple of hours of rubbing to clean it all.
    Since the 8th year of use I am at the 3rd set of rubber components (hand grip, thumb and eyepiece). I also have a full spare set (I ordered 2 full sets the second time I had to replace them).
    The mode dial acts out on my camera as well.
    The screen no longer turns the image the correct way up when I flip it facing forward and it shows no image when I turn it facing me and I close it on the camera. It works well in all other positions. This does not bother me as I mainly use the small screen in the viewfinder.
    I took more than 1000 shots with a full original battery and it still had some juice left. Of course, the number of shots I can take with a full battery has decreased over time. The manual zoom helps a lot!
    70,000+ total shots and counting. 100,000+ km and counting :)

    A very interesting video, especially because I have a Fuji HS 30, which to be honest I have not used to it’s highest potential. You have kickstarted my interest so thank you for that. I am also surprised you have so few likes and comments. Was the Fuji HS 50 not as popular as I thought?

    • @TheBuddingEngineer
      @TheBuddingEngineer  2 года назад +1

      I'm sure it was popular amongst birders, I can't find sales figures though
      I'll say that it wasn't popular enough for Fujifilm to keep in production, as they discontinued all bridge cameras in 2015, including the HS50 - the writing was on the wall for small-sensor cameras due to smartphones. But that didn't stop me from enjoying my camera
      And thank you for your comment, don't forget to make full use of your zoom (I did for several years)

    • @patrickiredale4359
      @patrickiredale4359 2 года назад

      I appreciate the fulsome reply. My (now old) iPhone 5s has 8 MP, so I see your point about why Fuji discontinued the bridge camera. Mobiles still can’t match the zoom though, of course. As people say, the best camera to have is the one you have with you at the time, which most often is a mobile phone!

    Interesting review. Very well done, great work. The manual zoom feature is interesting too. In some ways much better then the glacier slow zoom on bridge cameras now. I think this camera was a bit ahead of its time. The fully articulating screen, the 921,000 dot screen and viewfinder were pretty high end at the time. . I have a Nikon B700 made much later and it has the same resolution screen and viewfinder, and a lot of the features are the same. The lightening fast focus of the Fuji is amazing and still better than the B700. Some of your photos from this old camera look amazing. However, I think if I was going for a bridge camera now it would be the Panasonic FZ300, or if I won the lottery, the Sony RX10 mk IV.

    • @TheBuddingEngineer
      @TheBuddingEngineer  3 года назад +1

      I agree, the HS50's features, speed and handling were a bit too far ahead, and yet made it future-proof. It's a shame Fuji pulled out of the bridge cam segment, hence there won't be a successor. Though that didn't stop me from using mine for 7 straight years. These days, extra features like 4K, and better image processing of newer bridge cams (like your B700), are really showing the HS50's age.
      I too would get the FZ300 if I needed a new bridge cam, funnily enough. Thank you for your kind words

    • @TheBuddingEngineer

      Well, I couldn't find any info online, nor am I that experienced with flashes in general
      I have tested the sync speed with a manual speedlight, and photos came out fine well over 1/1000, even up to 1/4000 with a slight change in exposure
      Agreed, if I bought a TTL-compatible speedlight, it'd likely be on the camera anytime it isn't sunny

    I know nothing about cameras specs and that but km hoping to start doing sports videography. Shall I buy this camera second hand for 140 quid or spend 40 quid more on a Canon eos 700d?

    • @TheBuddingEngineer
      @TheBuddingEngineer  3 года назад

      That's a difficult question.
      My best advice is to look at 'test' videos of these cameras on RUclips, and see which one you like. A lot of my earlier vids were shot with the HS50.
      Both cams run at 1080p, but the HS50 shoots at a higher framerate (60fps) than the 700d (30fps) - this means smoother footage.
      Unless you're close-up on the action, you most likely need a long zoom, which the HS50 will provide. You'd need to get a tele lens for your 700d, like the 55-250mm IS STM, which are around £120 on top of the body.
      However, the HS50's video quality is inferior to the 700d, and worsens under low-light and indoors. But do look at those video 'tests', it could be okay for your needs.
      The mentioned quality-control issues (faulty mode dial) unfortunately stops video recording, hence I retired my HS50 as my main shooter.
      Between these two, I'd lean towards the HS50 for your specific use, but make sure it's in good condition.
      Hope this helps, and feel free to ask anything

    Was just thinking about this sensor today. The exr seems different. Was it ccd?

    • @TheBuddingEngineer
      @TheBuddingEngineer  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, EXR sensors used to be CCD until around 2011 - the HS50's is a CMOS
      And it's quite a unique sensor. The pixels are rotated 45°, and each colour filter is paired up, which works similarly (in principle) to quad-Bayer sensors in today's phone cameras

    so.. you still use it in 2021 instead of pana`s FZ200, canon SX50, etc. ? Does it worth that ? I`ve shooting on DSLRs sinse 2011 and now think about this toy camera. Is it any good ? Soft touch body surface still non-sticky ?

    • @TheBuddingEngineer
      @TheBuddingEngineer  3 года назад

      Yeah, shot with the HS50 from 2014 until last year, image quality was enough for prints up to A4.
      The camera's good, but because of its quality control issues (faulty dials and sticky body), I don't recommend it.
      If I were to get a bridge cam today, it'd be the newer FZ300. Obviously image quality of this is still worse than a 2011 DSLR, but that's a compromise.
      And my HS50's body is slowly getting worse.
